The Midway timeline is just different, man. Liu Kang declines to rule as a King over Paradise with his true love, to protect Earth, only to be assassinated soon after. Then he's revived, not by Quan Chi, but by Raiden. Quan Chi arrogantly reveals his plot that turned Hanzo and Bi Han into his slaves, only for Scorpion to chase him into Hell, leading to the discovery of Onaga's tomb... Characters could have their own stories. They didn't have to shoehorn everyone into one narrative. And MK4 is the game that set up all the awesome things the next 2 games did, which coincidentally, are all the things NRS ruined in the second timeline.

Reason why Liu Kang can't get it on with Kitana was because of his Shaolin status. A Shaolin monk can't get married or get laid according to the law of being a monk. They also can't eat meat or drink alcohol either, this is one of the reason why Bo Rai Cho from Outworld was not invited to the Shaolin Tournament in the first MK game even though he's the sensei of both Liu Kang and Kung Lao in similar role to Gouken from Street Fighter, the sensei of Ryu and Ken.

Thought I'd mention: Nothing was actually cut from the N64 version of MK4 apart from FMV cutscenes. It was practically a 1:1 port of the arcade version. You may be confusing it with Mortal Kombat Gold, was a updated release with more characters and stages, exclusive to PC and Sega Dreamcast, but never saw an arcade release.

I disagree, Quan Chi is the best character. His combos, he can steal your weapon, he has an uppercut kick (down+HK), he can also do everyone's 2nd fatality, has an air throw, his head stomp is OP, and his grab/throws do lots of damage.

@@kingconrad I'd honestly say Reiko is my 2nd choice and go to character after Quan Chi, that flip kick is amazing, but the only thing that messes up sometimes is his circle teleport (back, forward LK). When I'm doing an insane combo with him (Maximum Damage) and I try to teleport, it does this weird side angle thing where the other character has to run to me, but sorta off camera and the camera spins trying to keep up with the action which can throw you off, because the angle is weird.

Also on certain consoles like Dreamcast there is a 5-6 second loading delay when you switch into someone else which makes it pointless, imagine a game totally stopping for 5-6 seconds mid combo, that's ridiculous. He also doesn't have his own moveset, the only thing he has is his weapon spear other than that he's an empty character. Him being an end boss means nothing, he was a trash boss in MK4, he's a Shang Tsung knockoff, but at least Mr. Tsung gave more of a challenge as a boss than him back in the day ' 92-'93 MKI/MKII

Mortal Kombat series was introduced to me with MK2. But historically MK4 was the first chapter of the franchise I truly enjoyed to play after its release in the late 90s. My platforms of choice were PS1 and PC, and now I realise that I still remember all the special attacks. The combos are also easy to master (yes, especially on the keyboard). And they are similar for all the characters, which is a huge step back, when compared to MK3. But the game is still fun to play because of its speed, style and great finishing moves. Recently I had an idea of getting back to the classics and tried MK Gold on Redream. I never had Dreamcast and 20 years ago the emulation quality was truly bad. In the end I was totally disappointed with the balance of the new characters. It seems like they were added the last minute and never really tested. After that I tried to run the GOG version of MK4, which has much better balance. And I must admit, it didn't age well. The colors, sprites and models look horrible, this arcade port is so bad. How could it be that I loved that "amazing 3D graphics" in 1999 on my first PC? Does anyone else have the same feeling? Or nGlide/dgVoodoo doesn't do its job well? I've set 4:3 aspect ratio and the color gamma to 0.8, because on the original hardware the game looks darker. Also sprites have thick black borders, and character polygons are sometimes blinking, which I never noticed previously. Please let me know if you have found a way for this game to look better on the modern systems.

The game play is fine, nothing special. I agree 1000% about the new characters being extremely lame. What ruins the game for me is the graphics and voices, the way they talk is ridiculous, and the animations when the characters are expressing themselves are so awkward. You just can't take it serious, i just laugh the whole time. The king of the MK franchise is Ultimate MK3. That game is the perfect fighting game. I also think the 2D format is better than 3D.

I'm also gonna join the chorus of Kai fans. He had unique moves, and as a black person myself, it was refreshing to see multiple black characters in this game instead of just Jax as the token. I do agree that his backstory was lame though. Kai, Jerek, and Reiko have what I call Reptile Syndrome: fun to play as, but next to no personality or characterization (and by that I mean, Reptile is my favorite character gameplay-wise but he never has a compelling story beyond being the Big Bad's minion). I hope they get more love in the future, but we'll see.

Mk4 was one of my favorite games in the series next to 2 and ultimate 3 it was definitely a good start to the 3d series and Kai was actually a great character hope we see him again in mk1 3rd timeline.

You didnt even discuss that Liu Kang Bicycle kick was actually hard to execute, you have to hold Low kick for 3 seconds before release. You didnt even mention that Reptile got its lizard form in this game. He was human form till mk3. This lizard form was ridiculous. You didnt even mention that Jax fatality was difficult to make. Hands rip off fatality required you holding keys for few seconds. You didnt even mention that Reiko has some connections to Shao Kahn. He wasnt there in the game until Ed decided to Replace Noob Saibot with Reiko. You didnt even mention that Jarek RIP OFF of Kano. Wasted Slot! Dude, you thought Fujin had boring design?? Really? his sea green pants, white hair and crossbow makes him so Unique. Wind powers were incredibly sick. How come you didnt realize that? You didnt even praise Quan Chi Leg beating fatality. WOW! I didnt like that Quan Chi copied second fatality of each character. For Sonya, you just dont know what to say? Hehehe! LMAO!

It’s strange, I play MKGold on the Dreamcast and there’s something I like about it after all these years. It’s quirky, and feels like the precursor to the PS2 trio (selection, deadly alliance, Armageddon). It’s an alright game if you base it on its own, and I still don’t think it’s amazing but in retrospect it’s very playable and interesting if anything else.

One part of this game that kinda perplexes me is the Max Damage cap feature where once you reach a certain amount of damage in a combo, the last hit sends both of you flying backwards, interrupting the combo. I mean I appreciate it from a challenge aspect, but it's a weird way to prevent infinite combos. I mean the fix is usually to make the victim take less damage or fall faster from the air with each hit while they're being juggled. The Max damage feature just seems lazy and it rudely interrupts the player's mojo.

The game was so broken, some throws would infinitely loop into themselves. Max Damage was needed to avoid super easy death throw combos.

Don’t worry, MK Gold, which is to MK4 what UMK3 is to MK3 (an expansion game in the pre-DLC era of video games), will definitely make up for your disappointment here. I personally give the original MK4 a 6.5/10.

MK Gold is nothing like Ultimate MK3. MK Gold had no new things that builds into MK4, every characters, stages and such are just old contents but in 3D, in Ultimate MK3 we actually had new characters like Rain and Ermac and some new stages not from any of the previous MK games.

MK4 is not good. The worst part is the dial combos are the SAME for every character. Scorpions' from UMK3 works for every single character. They really mailed that part of the game in. HP HP HK HK

People might want to do fatalities on me for saying this, but i actually like MK4 more than 3 in any of its iterations. The artstyle feels more in line with 1 and 2, and while the roster is smaller i’d argue it feels more focused. Plus, i do have soft spot for Reptile’s design in this game even if it looks odd. It retains a humanoid posture for him while also revealing more of his Zaterran origin.
