I think the reason why they look like they're flipping their enemies off is because the alien model clenches 4 fingers and only has 4 fingers. The other characters clench 4 fingers except for their middle finger.

Well, technically, you're right. The original Alien model only has four fingers, while everybody else has five. The middle finger is rigid because it's linked to the tarkatan arm blades, which always run parallel to the forearm.
