"The whole of the Prelude (Fantasia) in A minor sets out to surprise or perhaps even to shock his listeners a little", says harpsichordist Lars Ulrik Mortensen. From beginning to end Bach creates expectations and then does something different.

After hearing this interview (and the whole performance before), I cannot but agree with Lars Ulrik Mortensen's analysis, interpretation and understanding the young ambitious Bach... "Shock after shock"... A-ma-zing! Thanks NBS for this shocking upload.

It’s absolutely coherent - also reading the big biography of Wolff on Bach’s life he interpreted it the same way. The then young Bach, virtuous harpsichord and organ player, gifted like almost no one else - and eager to prove his capabilities and to make a big career as a professional musician. It is so sad, that during his lifetime he was not more than a “local hero” in Saxony/Thüringen and did not see the full effect of his music which has endured centuries and has influenced many musicians, particularly those of the 19th century. I once heard that it’s easy to think about music of the 18th century without Bach - for the 19th century it’s unthinkable. By the way a fantastic performance by Mortensen, only surpassed by Staier in my opinion. Bravo!!

I don’t see how it would be grotesque though. But alas, points of view.

It doesn't even sound like Bach to me. Or Krebs. Could this have been written by one of Bach's sons?
