Not sure I don't fish. But I think he means let the fish 'grab' the bait before winding the line in?

You don't wind straight away when a big fish has just been hooked because you might pull the hook out as he fights against the tension on the line,you may have to let the fish take line until he tires and then reel in keeping the rod up to absorb any lunges the fish make,,hope this helps 😊
