Thank you so much for your video! I am currently in school for funeral service in North Carolina, and I related a lot to your experiences deciding on taking the program and what school was like for you. I decided this was what I wanted to do when I was 23 years old. I did terrible in high school because I just didn't care, and never thought I would go to college. As soon as I got my mind set on working in the mortuary business, I buckled down and told myself, "This is the most important thing you'll ever do". It's been difficult this first year, because of pre-requisite and remedial classes, but I'm still determined and already so proud of myself for what I've accomplished. I'm inspired by your story and determination. I'm taking on a lot of classes to make up for time lost and it's encouraging to know that if others can do it, then I can too, and I won't lose hope or my drive in pursuing my dream. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Jessie, I am so very proud of you. YOU CAN DO IT! Your message is so heartwarming and touching. Please make sure that you are taking care of yourself while your in school and as you transition into your career. Burnout and compassion fatigue are very real. I have a course designed specifically for death care professionals that talks about these issues and how to care for ourselves. Please use the link below if you're interested. It is self-study so that you can watch at your own pace. Self Care for Death Care Professionals www.thegravewoman.com/store/p19/Self_Care_for_Death_Care_Professionals__Self_Study_Course.html

According to learning in person at the laboratory, experience is the best teacher. Both ways of learning, online learning and interpersonal learning, have respective advantages as disadvantages. With the general studies at mortuary school, you get to learn what happens in the whole house (funeral home). The fact that the funeral business is like most other businesses. People are different, and everyone does not like everything. The one thing that you mention about the psychology subject is that you may also likely learn to relate to workers, because people have 2 kinds of attitudes: awesome attitude, and awful attitude. One kind of attitude may be stronger than the other kind. As I watched your show, I want to type that I admire your reputation and like your style.

I am starting my first year of my bachelors in funeral sevice and embalming, and I was having a really big fear of not making it because I don't have the "typical" funeral director look and it really inspires me to see someone else who doesn't fit that tiny mold and be successful. It really helps build my confidence.

The program I’m attending here in Florida takes 3 years for most people. Personally we have 23 hours of prerequisites (College algebra, English Comp., Business Law, Human Anatomy & Physiology, etc.) before we can even begin anything directly related to mortuary sciences! It’s really frustrating for most of us as first year students because you want to get into everything from the start but it just doesn’t work that way unfortunately.... but our program is amazing and has a great graduation and licensing rate!
