Ali Örnek... I born in his neighbour Country and I can tell you that I had a great memory of this song. It remind me of my childhood. I went back to Africa in 2006 and we visit his country with my father, all the sudden I heard my father screaming at me to come to hotel reception and when I got there I could not believe Mr Kante was there taken the pictures with my father. He was very proud of his country and married my grandma, a Caribbean woman that’s why I only know a few about mali but whenever I listen to malian/Senegalese music I feel connected to my mother land I even listen to some kora instrumental sometimes it makes me so proud of my roots you should listen to oumou sangare - saa magni 🙏🏽

African music legend Mory Kante dies aged 70 in Guinea. Musician Mory Kante, who helped win African music a global following, has died in the capital of his homeland Guinea at the age of 70, his agent said on Friday. Kante's long-running career saw him progress from regional acclaim as a player of the traditional West African kora instrument to international stardom in the 1980s with his chart-topping hit 'Yeke Yeke'. "Mory passed away last night in his sleep in Conakry," his manager Juan Yriart told Reuters by phone. "The cause is unknown." Yriart said Kante was planning several concerts that were all then pushed back to next year due to the new coronavirus outbreak. Born in 1950, Kante toured the world as a leading light of the African music scene before returning to his native Guinea in the 2000s, where he championed causes to help refugees and save threatened forests, according to a biography on his website. He continued to make music, joining forces with other African musical heavyweights in 2014 to create the song 'Africa Stop Ebola' in the face of the epidemic that killed more than 11,300 people.

@@BillBiggs1 I am surprised as well, but yeah, he said African, not just 'a' black person. I'm trying to think of others, but i guess they never reached No.1 on the list. Because i remember the theme song from Shaka Zulu, the lady that sung that died in obscrurity and poverty and the song was pretty famous in Holland, but probably did not make it to the top position. .... I just Googled who it was, it's Margaret Singana(born Margaret M'cingana) with the song 'We Are Growing' (btw i prefer the actual Shaka Zulu into version, with the drums and acapella parts instead of the electronic beat), and she was South African. And that song did reach No.1 on the Dutch Top 40 charts and stayed there for 4 weeks, same for the Single Top 100, also 4 weeks on 1. (Radio version kzbin.info/www/bejne/b6aaoGCgh8ppeqs ) (Shaka Zulu intro kzbin.info/www/bejne/raDVpayFiLyesNk ) So... either i'm missing something, or Gert has some explaining to do.
