Brilliant speaker about Crimea and about the Russian empire. Mind-blowing insights that MUST be listened to widely - in and out of Ukraine. Rory Finnin is an expert whose understanding is very deep and sensitive. He sees and speaks about the failures of both Soviet and Post-Soviet Russia, along with the failures of the West, especially in my view, all those European nations so close to the action, close to the meaning, close to the history. There is no excuse, going forward, to ignore, silence, minimize ANYTHING/EVERYTHING that Finnin referred to in this podcast. May his voice and insight now guide the actions by key bodies/people who can help shape a healthy existence for those in Crimea along with those in Ukraine mainland, and beyond. My heartfelt congratulations to this podcast for doing this interview and to Dr. Rory Finnin himself. His love and scholarship about Crimea should inspire us all.

Unfortunately Rory Finnin presented us only part of the story, i.e. the lie by omission. The Tatars themselves were invader conquerors (settlers) as well, coming from Central Asia. They were of the Cuman-Kipchak confederation, sometimes called Cumania, arriving in Crimea and southern Ukraine in the 11th century. Then the Mongol invaders arrived in the 13th century. The Crimean Khanate was once part of a larger khanate called the Golden Horde which was established after the dividing of the Mongol Empire. Cumania invaded what was Khazaria, also a central Asian realm. The Khazars invaded the Caucasus and southern Ukraine. They were in Crimea from the 7th century. Then the Vikings (the Rus) began to arrive. Go back even further and Crimea was once Greek. Also invaders. When they arrived they encountered the Tauri. Crimea was once known to the outside world until the 19th century as the Tauric Peninsula from the Greeks who called it Ταυρική (Taurike). Crimea's history is a continuum of invasion. Many places are. I make this comment not to justify Russia's imperial ambitions (don't forget Russia signed many treaties recognising Ukraine's borders and also was renting Sevastopol, which further signifies Moscow's recognition of Ukraine's ownership) but to make clear the Tatars are not an indigenous people like the Aboriginal Australians.

Mostly accurate, but the Rus are not vikings, even though we dealt with them quite often. The Vikings as we know them are a distinct group of Norsemen from modern day Scandinavia, not the Slavic tribes. Some of our rulers were of their origin and vikings also served as mercenaries in our druzina.

This is THE most fascinating podcast EVER. Your guest - whoever thought anyone in US academia would choose Crimea of all places as a specialized area of interest? - was so knowlegable I was mesmerized, have already listened to it twice, and have forwarded it on to everyone I thought would also find it interesting. In addition, the observation that Ukraine might very well find future investment monies as well as membership in the EU and/or NATO problematic if Crimea were not returned to Ukraine was something i've not heard elsewhere. This podcast should be mandatory lisening to anyone and everyone who is engaged in foreign policy concerning the area s well as those who play any part in policy negotiations, particularly politicians who make choices on defense spending and/or demands for a specific agenda, when they are regrettably ignorant on the consequences of their decisions.

No mention was made of the fact that Sebastopol has been home to Russias Black Sea fleet since the 18th century and that as a warm water port it is crucial for providing year-round access to the worlds oceans. That's a major omission considering its the most important reason why Russia will never under any circumstances relinquish control of it.

Translate my message, I'm too lazy to write in English.

I even asked people about feeling more Russian or Ukrainian. Mostly just shrugs, frankly. Crimea was also an autonomous region within Ukraine, governmentally. Soon after leaving Ukraine, people I kept in contact with mentioned, often, about ‘Putin Tourists’ , their name for the little green men. Nobody was happy about it. UK is Still a tiny Empire. What is the justification for occupying Northern Ireland? How is it different from Russia wanting to occupy the Donbas?

This is not at all true. Kevin Mccarthy was being voted against by the people who are against the omnibus bill which includes the Ukraine spending. They were concerned with Mccarthy for a number of reasons but one specific is the text that he sent saying he was for forever spending for Ukraine. Many of the 20 who were voting against him are against this forever spending.

Somebody should talk to a British Army historian. They learned a lot about trench warfare, it couldn't hurt . The French also have considerable experience with winter, and trench warefare . "April is the cruelest month" because that's when the new offensives are mounted

Please don't judge Navalny on something he said years ago. He was realistic then, when he said it wasn't that simple to hand Crimea back to Ukraine without any national discussion. Yes he said it wasn't a sandwich. Since the war began, he said that in these new circumstances the situation is absolutely clear that Crimea must return to Ukraine.

Wait, what? This event happened because of troops using their mobile phones. And those responsible will be punished. But they are all dead aren't they? It's all nonsense anyway. I think we can be sure the Ukrainians knew what was going on in that building even without anyone using their phone.

Interesting podcast, but why have we never had this type of discussion by the Telegraph, discussing the USA's longstanding impeprial imperatives. For example annexation of haiwi, Phillipines , Cuba, Haiti, Syria, Diego Gracias,(leased by the British to USA) and countless other interventions and invasions, not least my own country Grenada in 1983. Why the bias against Russia?

For the question about (current) population of Crimea not supporting Ukraine’s take-over. (1) Russian rule has been economically poor and brutal (2) People like Denys Davidov who comes from Sevastopol will tell us how the people feel.

I have heard that Navalny has changed his stance fairly recently on Crimea, although I don’t see Navalny making much of a difference anytime soon in Russia because Putin’s replacement will probably be even worse, if that is possible.

About Navalny seeing Crimea as a part of Russian sphere of influence, is simply wrong. This rumor started from an interview Navalny had given, where he was talking about a difficulty to reintegrate Crimea back into Ukraine. What he said was taken completely out of context and used against him. Please do your homework more thoroughly.

Ukraine almost certainly will never gain EU membership. Their agricultural industry would at a stroke massively increase the EU agriculture output. The EU CAP would collapse under such financial demands.

@@steve-real Yea I know, but Francis read Ben's analysis towards the beginning of the podcast... I am a fan of Ben and hope more like him have replaced him in today's American Armed services and have really appreciated what he has done since leaving the service including matters pertaining to Ukraine. I have read up on Crimea since the start of the recent invasion thus find todays speaker interesting too....
