It's crazy how under appreciated this guy is. 3 time league MVP, 12 time all star, 6 time league rebounding leader, and finals MVP after sweeping a Magic and Kareem lead Laker team. And yet with all that he is hardly ever talked about.

@mericanmodi8479By his Hawks days he was in his mid 30s, not really a surprise that he’s not top 10 material as he entered the 1990s, and yet he was consistently good enough post-1983 that he was All-Star quality for the rest of the decade. Yes Malone came off his prime immediately after 1983, but that’s fine. He had a 5 year prime where he deservedly won regular season MVP 3 times in that spell. And yes he deserved all 3 MVPs over Kareem- he scored and rebounded more than Kareem.
@hitthurdeaux
@hitthurdeaux Жыл бұрын
Yes, Moses had a higher PPG and RPG than Kareem in 1979, 1982, and 1983. So no he didn’t outperform Kareem in just one major category, he also outperformed him in the most important category. Funny how you use Kareem’s advancing age to emphasize how good he was in one moment, then use his age to dismiss Moses the next. Your framing of history is sloppy as hell with the details. You talk as if he became terrible post-83. Yes after 1983 Moses came off his prime, but he was still All-Star quality through 1989. He led the 76ers to another ECF in 1985 sandwiched between injury-hampered seasons, then maintained a high standard of points and rebounds playing for teams fighting for the Celtics and Pistons’ scraps. Moses is in the Mount Rushmore of rebounding, had a prime where he rivaled and outshone the greatest center of all time in the 2 most important aspects of pivot play, carried a truly mediocre team to the Finals, then joined, led, and was the best player in one of the greatest and most dominant teams in NBA history. He doesn’t need insane longevity, he’s easily top 20 of all time.

Yeah, for some reason, the 81-82 season has gotten lost. There is even more footage of full games floating around of the 80-81 season than 81-82. The 79-80 rookie seasons of Magic and Bird are remembered- and the Finals that year with Magic's epic 42-point Game 6 is on tape. Even Bird's first title in 81 against Moses and Houston is remembered. The 82-83 season when Moses moves to Philadelphia and Doc's first title is remembered; the first Los Angeles/Boston battle in 83-84 that went 7 games is certainly recalled. What's missing? 81-82. I'm not sure why that is.

When Moses started grunting like a steer you were in trouble . He ate your fouls punished you on the boards for second chance points put you in foul trouble caused you to call timeouts and sub. At the other end he blocked your shots after setting their defense on all those free throws he ate the Lakers and Kaj lunch. Relentless push which he complemented with mid range scoring and passes out of double and triple teams. He consumed so much of opponents energy his teammates got wide open shots.

This season, Mitchell Robinson led the league in offensive rebounds per game with 4.5. Note: Steven Adams averaged 5.1 offensive rebounds per game, but missed too much time to qualify for the leaderboard. Moses Malone averaged at least 4.5 offensive rebounds per game in each ot his first 16 seasons (from his rookie season with the Utah Stars the ABA in 1974-75 to his second season with the Hawks in 1989-90). Incredible!

Moses Malone is one of those players who somehow turned a physical disadvantage (his total lack of verticality) into an advantage. Defenders are frequently mis-timing their defense not expecting such a low and quick release of the ball. You could probably add his, ehm... unorthodox post game to the mix. Instead of aiming for shot efficiency, he frequently threw the ball in the general direction of the hoop and then got his own rebound, scoring with a second or third attempt. The other two, who turned a physical disadvantage into an asset: Muggsy Bogues, whose short stature made him a nightmare on defense and kept the ball out of reach for any defender. And of course, Kyle "Slo-mo" Anderson, the man who weaponized slowness.

I don't know about any physical disadvantage. The guy was incredibly quick for someone his size, had unbelievable stamina, and was obviously very strong. He's mostly taking guys to school in a three-foot space in these clips by beating them to the spot or knocking them backward. You can't do that consistently w/out distinct physical advantages.

Wasn't Charles Barkley physically disadvantaged as a 6'4" power forward playing against taller players? Barkley said that he was able to adjust against taller players due to his quickness and against the rest due to his power

Moses' talents and game are timeless. He's big enough to play in any era and his footwork, anticipation, and most of all PHYSICAL EFFORT do not require the aesthetic talents like jumping, speed. etc. that have evolved over the generations. Its no exaggeration, no jaded nostalgia to say, Moses Malone would be very effective in any era.

The game was better then, even though the average player today is more athletic and skilled. There was a placid beauty to the game back then; less virtuosic ball handling and one on one shot creation, but more play off the pass and in the interior. It was more of a gentleman's game. It was more horizontal.
