Amazon P Channel Mosfets amzn.to/2rGCKej N Channel Mosfet amzn.to/2Ifsvc4 Aliexpress P Channel Mosfets s.click.aliexpress.com/e/qbAiQfe N Channel Mosfet s.click.aliexpress.com/e/F6uBmIQ FYI this very simplistic Breaking circuit does not work when controlled buy a different voltage than the out put voltage to the Motor .. this means this can not be controlled by something like an Arduino the P channel Mosfet will likely go up in smoke. For high current loads a Heat sink my be required for cooling the mosfets.

Fantastic video explaining everything MOSFET! Thank you so much for your efforts mate! Massive congrats.. Only thing I think that could make this video complete is the part numbers of the components you used and the specs of the motor. Or alternatively provide a breakdown for the younger crowd or the novice electrical mind for MOSFET selection. For example do a practical example of determining the correct selection based on real motors, like the MTB Rhino, and show the adding up of multuple motors for the flywheels and also the separate pusher motor. Then you can show option available from RS Components or WES Electronics and how to correctly select a MOSFET.

Awesome Video, Im new to modifying nerf blasters and some of the modifying videos on youtube are just a joke, there is no logical theory on how it can or does improve the blaster, they refer to everything as a "Resistor" and treat it as a bad thing. But this video is hands down the best video ive seen...... U should be proud. hopefully this knowledge will become more mainstream

Q: do you need a diode for each brushless motor if you would do a brushless setup?

Thanks for the very clearly explanation about switching and breaking with mosfets, when using an brushed motor. I'm currently exploring the possibility to salvage mosfets from an cheap Chinese brushed ESC. Expected to find an h-bridge with 4 mosfets. Instead I found 2 n-channel mosfets and 2 p-channel mosfets..... ???. Well, both n- and both p-channel mosfets are connected in parallel. Thus giving exactly your schema. And now i've got realy curious. So, next step is to trace out the complete pcb and learn exactly what they dit. It seems simple, but is an 12V 30A ESC on an PCB measuring about 2 cm by 3 cm. How amazing. Again, great video. Thanks

Question about the wires themselves. You seem to be using very thin wire throughout. Does the MOSFET make this possible? Are there certain lines that need to be thicker if you're using more powerful motors with their high amperage?

This is a really really great video, and I've been considering using a circuit like this for a few projects I'm working on, but I chatted with a few people and the consensus seems to be that the braking circuit might short and fry both the fets open. The thought is that shoot through caused by both fets being on at the same time for a split second would fry them open and basically vaporize your wires. This is all, of course, theory. FETs are designed to switch at insanely high speed, so I'm really wondering whether it will be an issue at all, but i'm curious if you've tested this circuit thoroughly , and whether you've had any issues before I hand the blaster off to a client. Happy to take you at your word here, as practical application seems to beat theory 9/10 times.

Hello. I know the braking circuit requires you to power both fets with pack voltage. What I mean is you can't power one with a arduino

In theory what you've been told is theoretically correct. It was not my design others have posted this before. Would be interested in the decussion being had

I'm late to this discussion, but yes, shoot-through is definitely a problem. If you are using beefy enough FETs then your saving grace is the limited current the battery can supply. But eventually you will fry one or both of your FETs. For the couple of bucks, $10 or so, that you spend on the two FETs it is likely not worth worrying about, but generally you'd want to use a gate driver or microcontroller to drive your FETs so that you can control the dead band, and eliminate shoot-through.

A few Stupid questions if I may When creating an active braking mosfet set. What size mosfets are you using ? Do they need to be matched in volts & amps? And what size resistor should I use between the gate and sorce on the N mosfet?

My brain hurts trying to figure out how the active braking circuit would look for the regulator's pusher motor because the signal coming off the PCB is apparently negative... or would it not matter?

Interesting ! I was actually searching for one simple. I managed with a relay but with a load it takes time to stop. In your circuit how quickly does it stop and would PWM be ok to be used here ?

if I wanted to make the motor braking selectable could that be achieved by putting a switch some where in the wiring for the p-channel mosfet? ... if so where would that switch need to be placed? Thanks for the awesome video. (EDIT: I'm thinking that a switch in the yellow wire between the gates of the N & P would do it. is that right? ... and you would probably want a diode for when the motor braking is off)
@JamesBurkart
@JamesBurkart 5 жыл бұрын
You'd want to pull the gate of the P channel FET high if you don't want to use it, which you can do by using a SPDT switch and a 10k resistor, and don't switch the brake off while the motor is spinning or you might fry your FETs. To wire the switch, common goes to gate of the P channel, then one side of the switch goes to the other gate, and the other side of the switch goes to the new 10 k which then goes to positive.

hey im thinking about this possibly tooo much... sorry :) With these setups have u check for voltage drop on startup? A capacitor bank similar to RC car ESC across the battery wires could get the motors spinning up faster and smoother out the load spikes on the battery?

Yes that is correct ..space is the real problem preventing that in a lot of blasters ..

When wiring for dynamic/active braking. When the blaster’s switch is in the resting position and thus active braking engaged: does the circuit keeps pulling current from the source? Or does it stop pulling current once the motors stop?
