Песня на цыганском языке. В Москве раньше в СССР был цыганский театр ( сейчас не знаю, что то давно уж не слышал) и актёры в основном от туда. The song is in the Gypsy language. In Moscow, there used to be a gypsy theater in the USSR (I don't know now, I haven't heard anything for a long time) and the actors are mostly from there.

In Russian Roma are called Tsigane which is not a derogatory term. Roma culture had a huge impact on Russian romance music genre. The Tsigan ensembles were extremely popular in the Imperial Russia and later in the USSR. They were often mentioned in the classic literature. Without understanding this special connection it's impossible to fully comprehend Russian classics. There were expressions "Let's go to the Tsigans" or "Call the Tsigans" which basically meant - let's go to a Tsigan chorus ensemble, a place where you could feel absolute freedom, dashing fun and spiritual uplift because of the soulful music and dances.
@republicofhandball881512 күн бұрын
Tsigane/Cigane or Roma or Gipsy are the same, just that all these 3 words have different roots. First of all, these people came from India, but they were the lowest cast in India, people without home, nomads, sleeping outdoor etc (there are still many Indians today that live like that). And they came here through the Ottoman Empire where they were slaves as this was the reason they were brought there and they were called tzigani/cigani(this is the 1st root). They were called 'gipsy' for those that moved from Ottoman Empire south to Egypt, or they were simply considered similar to Egyptians in Western part of Europe, so this word roots in Western part of Europe. Roma/Romani is definitely related to Roma the major city, capital of Italy, with lot of history, and it's rather an endonym, they called themselves like that, somehow as a way to identify the direction towards they wandered. As you can see, Roma/Romani (the endonym) emerged as the official name, while Tzigani/Gipsy are rather the exonyms, and so the pejorative terms.

I am from Romania. When i was a kid in the 80s, would travel cross country with my parents on hollydays. I remember seeing gypsies with those carts exactly like in the movie. They were actually not on the road but by the hills. Each tribe had a different working skills, many would do copper or cast pans, some would work the gold. They were still free to move around as nomades. We still have them in Romania today, not sure if they are still nomades but in Transilvania you can still see them in small cities the girls with long red dress. Many live in villages where is not advisable to travel by foot for personal safety. Even in Bucharest there is an entire district with them, called Ferentari. While they are romanian citizens, ethnically speaking they are different than romanians and speak they very own language. Most are poorly educated and barely go to school, but those who have better luck and stay longer in school can actually achieve a good job in life, they are actually quite smart. Unfortunately, beause of high criminality they are a black sheep in Romania. There is actually a swear word 'tigan' (gypsi in romanian) used by romanians as an insult. They like to call themselves roma rather than gypsi - roma is not related to the word romanian. They originated from northern India many centuries ago. In Romania they have been employed as slaves in the past centuries, much like the black people in the Americas, a very similar story.
@orange18328 ай бұрын
I saw a lot, I mean it, really a lot of Roma people when I repeatedly traveled through Romania, Bulgaria and Slovakia 10-15 years ago. Unfortunately, unlike the Roma actors in this beautiful film, these people are not integrated into society and often live in awful and shocking conditions. We also have got Roma diaspora in my country, but despite being very tribal - marrying strictly among their ethnicity, carrying their traditions and language - many of them could and do work hard. Anyway, there's a lot of prejudice because of criminal activity, fraud, drags, and so on. Surprisingly Roma haven't got their own religion and are either Catholics or Orthodox here. In Russian they're also called Tsigane which is not a derogatory term.

The ending is clear if you read the book (Gorki's short novel). They (Rada and Zobar) are both very proud of their freedom, this define them. Both feel that, in the marriage, they will lose themselves, but can't help being attracted to each other. So, both chose death as a way out from an impossible situation: Rada put that condition knowing very well that Zobar will kill her before bowing to her, and Zobar accepted it knowing that both must die, because one can't live without the other, but neither will bend to the will of the other.

This film continues the success of director Emil Loteanu with the film "Lautarii", made by Moldova-Film, which has a different story. It was cast both in Russian and Romanian (the Republic of Moldova was then one of the Soviet republics, in that period). On the other hand, In "Lautarii" all the songs were in Romanian. Both films are masterpieces and in both, the music is composed by Eugen Doga (where there is no collected popular music). The Loteanu-Doga tandem reminds me of Sergio Leone- Ennio Morricone. I saw these movies in the cinema as a child :) and have re-watched them many times since then. It is also worth seeing "Lautarii".
@orange18328 ай бұрын
Dont want to be disrespectful to Doga, but most of the music here is Roma folk songs that were sung for ages. Doga only arranged them for the film and did a great job. The style the songs performed in was the style of Russian/USSR Tsigan choruses and ensembles, like Erdenko or Zhemchuzhny, popular at the time.

The plot line is simple: everyone around knows Zobar is going to die soon. Even he admits it, yet he chooses freedom in death. Gorky's depiction of the Gypsy lifestyle and psyche is very accurate - little respect for education, private property, manual work and societal rules in general.
