She was the first real rock lady, wasn't she? Pat Benatar was earlier but Chrissy fronted and played guitar, just a little before Joan Jett. Love 'em both but I'll always be a pretender.

Tom Anderson : How can you ignore Gracie Slick? She started in 1965 and she was fabulous. As good looking as any other woman, and she sang with a voice that was damn near perfect. (She sang with Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship.)

I bow down to Chrissie Hynde and have seen The Pretenders Live 5 times and none of the women I'm about to mention can match her in their vocals but they are still some pretty Heavy Hitters and yes front women with guitars and who wrote their own songs! As was already mentioned Grace Slick though I get your point you're talkin woman with guitars but still Grace Slick 👋 but Lita Ford, Patti Smith, Nancy Wilson of Heart though Ann did most of the vocals, Tina Turner, Suzi Quantro there were defibetly a few before Chrissie. And the ones I mentioned, I think anyways, were far better than Pat Benatar ever was ( I won't lie I've never been a fan) And Joan Jett , meh, she definitely had popularity with fans worldwide and did a lot of studio sessions with big names and performed live shows with alot of of big names, I recently read an article about her so my facts are coming from that not because I've ever been a huge fan or seen her in concert. Anyways Joan Jett gained her popularity not by performing her own songs, every hit we have ever known of hers was a cover, which surprised me. I knew Crimson and Clover was I didn't know every song she recorded or performed was either a cover or written by someone else. And even though she "played guitar" she wasn't real good at it but she sure did engage her crowds and seemed to give every show her hundred percent from what I've seen in video. I like that in any performer. But I have a hard time listing her as a true female rocker. I know not everyone writes their own songs but well she shouldnt belong in a conversation that has Chrissie or Grace or Ann and Nancy Wilsons names in it. But she is allowed because she did set kind of a precipice for female rockers and that was to get on the stage and look really hot and be able to play a few chords on the guitar and have an alright voice, and you can be a rock star too. Okay, sorry that was just uncalled for, honestly I do give Joan her props but she doesn't belong near my beloved Chrissie Hynde. And I'm sorry I went off on more of a tangent then I planned ✌😎

Could also make a case for Janice Joplin, but all the ladies mentioned herein are great. But Chrissy has that added punk attitude and look that I always loved.

This isn't a bad version, but I agree with you. The middle eight in this song is imo the best of any rock song ever.

It’s cause he’s loud and his kit bleeds into chrissie’s mic. She started hearing more of his drumming than her vocals. For a while they just turned him down in the mix but that wasn’t working. So they got the plexiglass which keeps his sound loud but not directly into Chris’ mic

What a terrible audience. In live concerts the band feeds off the crowd- so why don't you ( the crowd) give this band some nourishment? I make more noise at any live concert I attend than all these Aussies made when she asked the girls and the men if they were ready.
