Thank-you so much for all your videos. I am an experienced programmer, but have no experience at all with Hercules and MVS. I would like to use a hercules instance for some real personal app ( e.g. a database of web sites I've visited, personal finance tracking, catalogue of books I own, address book or something like that) Could you suggest a list of books and web sites to get me going? I need the basics of how to use the operating system, how to run programs, write and compile programs, and interface a hercules instance with the outside world

Sadly, it may be 50 years old, but I'm just slightly younger -- I remember reading PL/1 books in college. I used to love Pascal but then I was corrupted by C and my soul was forever lost. By the way, I'm still waiting for my TKZ19 emulator. I'd love a real one, but if someone found the power bill for it, I'd have to hide inside it -- at least I could.

It seems like Pascal or BASIC on MVS doesn't help you much if you want to get at native features like the 3270 function keys or CICS. It seems like you can't build a form-based app without CICS and you can't build a game without being able to detect keys that are sent immediately to the OS, like the function keys. I don't think you can do either of those things in Pascal. You're limited to batch apps.
