Such great lessons and teaching! I especially loved the quote about the nail and the post. And how we can continue to #hearhim and #knowhim by reading the scriptures daily and keeping the commandments.

I have pondered Bro. Anderson's talk a lot and really feel its importance. I know I taught my children the dance, but wish I'd done better with helping them hear the music of the gospel. But perhaps I wasn't there yet myself. Anyway, that is my new "soapbox" whenever I get a chance to encourage other parents. Thanks for bringing that up.

Food for thought - it was mentioned that attempts by the Nephites to preach to the Lamanites for 400 years had been unsuccessful until the mission of the sons of Mosiah. I would like to argue the point that for 400 years these 2 groups had lived separately, only mixing to fight. The return to the land of Nephi by Zeniff changed all that however. This became arguably the first time the Lamanites had been exposed to the Nephites on a day to day basis through the myriads of stories that occurred at this time. This could have softened the Lamanites hearts somewhat and maybe led them down the mental road that maybe everything they had been taught about the Nephites might be a little flawed. Perhaps the overzealousness of Zeniff was crucial to the conversion of so many Lamanites.

I love your explanation on why the rising generation didn't believe. You are right in that every child needs to gain their own testimony. Also on why the rebellion with Alma, your explanation makes the most sense. Other than we can say that Satan knew who these young men were and wanted them on his side. One more thing about preaching among the Lamanites, some missionaries are discouraged because they think they had no success but in reality they got people to think and for whatever reason it just took them longer to convert. Zeniff's people may have done more good to change the way the Lamanites thought about the Nephites. Aw if only the Lamanites had kept records.

Since the Holy Ghost is so often referred to as fire I have often wondered if when they talk about “burning” and “unquenchable fire” means tormented by our own guilt

Oh noooo! Where did your PDF slides go? I guess that 4 years ago I wasn't taking good notes. ~ On with the gospel learning . . . I've gotten so much more out of the Book of Mormon this year. I'm assuming that it's because I've been able to devote more time to searching, pondering and praying . . . of course, being retired HELPED!!! Thank you so much for keeping this post up. A lot has happened in the last 4 years.

I appreciate you mentioning that Alma received his calling and election made sure in Mosiah 26:20; very few teachers even mention this important principle (you know it's important, because Bruce R. McConkie put it in the heading to Chapter 26). It should be noted that when you have this great blessing, you are "highly favored", and you can ask for special requests from the Lord. This is why Alma could send an angel to his son (Mosiah 27:14). This is why Lehi could do the same. If we had the full record, we would know that someone with this power sent the angel to Saul in the New Testament. I wish you had taught more forcefully the baptism of fire and the Holy Ghost, which is what Alma the younger received in Mosiah 27:24-27, and what we all members of the church who have been baptized should be seeking. Note that he said, "ALL mankind...MUST be born again." Link this to Mosiah 5, and 15, and you get a fuller picture. One of the things I love about the Book of Mormon is that it teaches these great principles. Good stuff for mature members of the church.

I find it interesting that the children of Amulon left with Alma. Seems like they would have been pretty young. Maybe some of Amulon's wives were trying to get away? I'm surprised they were trusted to know the plan to leave, and it didn't get back to Amulon.

Thanks for asking. I use a pdf of the scriptures available here: media.ldscdn.org/pdf/lds-scriptures/triple-combination/triple-combination-eng.pdf You can mark it using tools available in a pdf reader. For the show I put the pdf pages into Keynote (like Powerpoint but for Mac) and draw the markings in each slide. I'm really glad you find it effective. I have really been enjoying it too. It has also helped me in my study.

@@brotherfullmer Thank you Bro. Fullmer. Two questions if I may. 1. Do you just need the regular free PDF reader or the extended tools version that you buy? 2. How do you get the vertical subject listings on the sides of the page? I can do a text box with the words but when I try to put it along the edge the writing doesn't turn sideways. As you can see I'm a bit tech impaired. Have you considered doing a short video demonstrating how you create these scripture marking examples? It would be terrific. I'm excited because I can attach Quotes and other cross-references right to the text. Thanks again!

Love your Scripture gems and come follow me. I would like to know how many years were Alma group in bondage?
@brotherfullmer
@brotherfullmer 4 жыл бұрын
There is no evidence as to how long Alma and his people were in bondage but as I read it, it seems that they were not in bondage long at all. Time during this section is tricky. The earlier anchor point we have is Omni 1:5 (280 BC) in the days of Amaron but then we don't get another date until Mosiah takes the throne in Mosiah 6:4 (124 BC). Everything in between is guessing. I'll link a chart below that involves a lot of guessing but is certainly possible. If that guessing is right, Limhi's people were in bondage for more than 20 years but Alma's people would have only been in bondage only a matter of months. byustudies.byu.edu/charts/29-flashbacks-book-mosiah

I've been enjoying your youtube lessons very much and have noticed that you use different colors highlighting the verses. What do the colors represent?
@janja2040
@janja2040 4 жыл бұрын
I am curious as well. Thank you for asking this question. I struggle knowing what colors to mark different scriptures in. I imagine it would be personal preference, but with my eight or so colors, I would like to use the same color for the same idea, i.e. Christ speaking, warnings, teachings, counsel, whatever. :)
@brotherfullmer
@brotherfullmer 4 жыл бұрын
I wish I did have a system but the colors are just to help differentiate between the blocks. In earlier episodes I did reserve reds for Isaiah and if some terrible events are going on I'll usually use a dingy or grey color but that's about it.

Brother Fullmer , thank you! you bring the Scriptures to life. Wish to know what programs you used to do coloring & interject into the scriptures presentation? I hope you keep this up, for it bring to light today’s problems.

My Pleasure. I use Keynote (Mac version of Powerpoint) to do all the markings and animations. I open individual pages of the scripture PDF in Photoshop and then import them into Keynote. I can then work with the pages using just the text and no page background. This way I can put colors under the text and so the colors don't fade the text.

Mosiah 25:13 Nephi had the divine right to rule, hence, his descendants were rightful heirs. Not sure though whether that right was still in force when their form of constitutional government changed from monarchical to a republic but I'm assuming it didn't. A divine right to rule

I have often wondered why those who choose a different path in life, say like evil rulers and other very bad actors would suffer the pains of hell when the gospel had no meaning to them to begin with. On the other hand, when you have people who have accepted the gospel and willfully, turned away and sinned at some point in their lives and never returned that the burning could be justified. But I am curious to what end this burning in hell serves. Godly retribution? I think there’s a lot that we don’t know regarding the final judgment. For example, Amulek who preached with alma spoke of Christ’s infinite and eternal sacrifice. Infinite and eternal seems to suggest not just this life, but including the world of spirits upon departure. from this mortal life, might have a second chance through this burning process?

I obviously do not have all the answers, but from my readings; particularly D&C 76, Alma 12, and Alma 42; justice has to be made. Evil is evil regardless of you know gospel or not. We know if you are not evil and don't know the gospel, you can still be in spirit paradise. However, the evil must "burn" in spirit prison, in my opinion, to accomplish the very thing you state, "so the gospel does have meaning to them." They are still being ministered to there. They will come forth in last resurrection and get a degree of glory still, thanks to our Savior Jesus Christ. Hopefully this provides a little more insight.

Thanks for your efforts to explain how all of these different groups in 2 different locations interacted. It would make so much more sense if you ditched the fake fantasy map representing imaginary geography and place these events in a real location with the land of Zarahemla west of Nauvoo (D&C 125:3) and Nephi in Tennessee area. This move would greatly enlarge your understanding of the Book of Mormon.

Thanks for your thoughts Bruce but, as you may know, we use Church materials in our lessons whenever possible (which includes this map). If you are interested in the scriptural foundation of the Church's internal map, I made a video about it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4qXgZiubpV8mKssi=5P73ARU5XxjYG0Xi

@@brotherfullmer This fantasy map showing the river Sidon flowing north (not true) has destroyed far too many testimonies because scholars have hijacked church history. Now look at the journal of John Morris King in 1838 in Ohio where Coriantumr was buried. You can find the journal in the church history library and at FamilySearch. “I witnessed several testimonies in the course of this winter. On the 20th of March, my brother Lorenzo Don died, aged 21 years 9 months, and 7 days. He being the first of my father's family that had laid down their bodies in the dust out of 11 children. In the course of this winter, Joseph Smith, the Prophet of the last days, left for the State of Missouri, and sent back a letter for the church to gather up in haste and be at peace amongst their selfs (selves) or there would be no safety for them. I therefore began to prepare to leave the following Spring. In the course of the winter, I witnessed the acts of some, and the dissensions of many who had once stood high in the Priesthood, yet I felt a desire to persevere in the principles that I had embraced, and for this intent, on the 8th of June 1838 I with some others started for Far West in the State of Missouri, county of Caldwell. We traveled by the way of Cleveland and Norwalk until we arrived at West Union where we stopped for a short time to work. Here I will state that I received a great testimony of the Book of Mormon, it being a disinterested testimony. A woman by the name of Dils who had been a Sutton when a girl after inquiring who we were and where we were going. She stated that she never had seen but one Mormon and he passed by and she did not hear him speak. Yet she believed that this land had once been inhabited by an intelligent people. She said her father was a stone cutter and lived on the Little Miami River in Ohio. She was a girl. One day when he was quarrying stone he found, in a bed of rock, all the bones of a man's body which he fetched home and put them under his bed. On the following morning he told his family that the man to whom the bones belonged to came to the side of his bed during the night. The man had told him his age and that he belonged to a people that were scattered from the tower of babel when the Lord confounded the language, and that they were brought to this land and they became a numerous people and they began to have contentions amongst them and so in those days the Lord raised up a prophet and prophisied that if they did not cease their fighting that he only should be left of all the people in the land, and that it did prove so that they were all slain except himself and the other leader, and he finally overcame him and tarried until another people came and found him and he lived with them nine moons and died and they buried him there where he had found his bones. This testimony came about 15 or 20 years before the book of mormon came forth.”
