I've seen a lot of products that have both real UV LEDs and also bright blue LEDs to let humans know not to look at it and to let people know that it is on. Of course some of them cheat and don't have any UV at all but most of the ones I've seen have both. And a lot of the fancy new UVC leds are double dye.... and have both in the same package as a safety feature. I've been ordering and experimenting with a lot of uvcc LEDs over the last few years since the technology is becoming more prevalent and maturing. It's really cool and exciting and they just keep getting more and more powerful.

When he mentioned the LEDs flicker at 50Hz, I don’t think it is because one half cycle is going into them as wouldn’t they still flicker at 50Hz if the full AC cycle went into them as they’re directional?

I have been given UV-type (tube type) "mosquito zappers" in the past. Unlike many other nocturnal insects, such as moths, there were never any signs that mosquitos were at all interested in UV light. But! Some are definitely attracted to the IR emitters on my security cameras at night. Studies have shown mosquitos have incredibly sensistive heat sensing ability (capable of detecting a few hundredths of a degree change in temperature per second). Presumably the IR emitters can appear to the mosquitos as a false body heat signal.

1A fuse! That's 230W... (at 230V) 200mA or less would be more appropriate
@anindyamitra5091
@anindyamitra5091 6 жыл бұрын
Turborider, 1 A fuse is given for the case when the 430k bleeder resistor or the capacitors shorts out. 200mA fuse would blow up immediately because the initial inrush current is huge due to the capacitors in the circuit.
@Turborider
@Turborider 6 жыл бұрын
You could just use a slow reacting fuse. I doubt that the circuit needs more than 200W to charge up the few small caps.
@DiodeGoneWild
@DiodeGoneWild 6 жыл бұрын
That's because of the inrush of the capacitors. Using a slow blow fuse with a lower rating would be better, but I think that slow fuses are more expensive and that's the problem :).

You just need to learn about the impedance of capacitors in AC circuits. At a fixed frequency (50Hz) the capacitor just acts like a current limiting resistor except that it does not dissipate any power as heat.

DiodeGoneWild One suggestion to make it even more power efficient, for the mode that the UV LEDs are on; Currently the four UV LEDs are in series. What if we place them in 2 parallel branches, 2 LEDs in each branch. The 2 branches should have opposite polarity so that in one half cycle the LEDs of one branch are on and the LEDs of the other branch are off, and the opposite happening in the other half cycle. The Zener and 1N4007 should also be omitted. I guess this way the voltage drop capacitor (2200nF) will help more in decreasing power dissipation (For the mode that the UV LEDs are on).
@zwz.zdenek
@zwz.zdenek 3 жыл бұрын
That would take some load off the Zener, but it would also make the efficiency of the capacitive dropper worse, so the only good way is still a full bridge rectifier.
@a000ab
@a000ab 3 жыл бұрын
@@zwz.zdenek How does it worsen the efficiency of the capacitive dropper? With my suggestion, for when the NPN transistor (and hence the UV diodes) is off, no current passes through the capacitive dropper at all. Just when the NPN transistor turns on current passes through it.

The new modification still shorts the LEDs. How it saves power ?
@DiodeGoneWild
@DiodeGoneWild 6 жыл бұрын
Originally it didn't short the LEDs. Now it does. A capacitive dropper supplies a constant current, so the higher is the voltage drop of the load, the more real power it draws. If the load is shorted, its voltage drop is zero. Then the capacitor only draws a capacitive power, not a real power. Some power is still dissipated in the discharging resistors and in the inrush resistor, but the total power is less, because the output of the dropper has nearly zero voltage (just the voltage drop of the transistor, lets say 1V). Simply said, by shorting the LEDs out, the real part of the power decreases. Just the capacitive power remains, but it's not shown by the wattmeter and you don't pay for it.

OMG! One suggestion for product reviews: what about solar panels and MPP-Tracker for solar panels (max power point)? I think its an interesting technology and i bought a few solar panels recently to test them. Variying from 0.5W up to 50W Peak power. In fact they mostly reach 70% in best sunlight conditions. Some chinese cheap ones only reach 30 - 50% but they are getting cheaper and cheaper. you get 1W/peak for less than 1 Eur nowadays :-)

That's why I liked this person's analysis of the products description as written on its box. Is it this? Or is it that? Lol This is a smart, wise not easily fooled man. He would make a great lawyer or judge... Scrutinising each and every detail to get a full and accurate picture of how and why something works.
