Mossberg Maverick 88 Security Model review and upgrades discussion

I am reviewing the Mossberg Maverick 88 security model. It's a great firearm at an excellent price point. I am also discussing the upgrades I have done to the firearm as well. I will leave a link to each below.

One of the best low budget shotguns on the market! Now I've picked up a brand new pump shotgun for 130 after taxes which just plain works but the 88 for 200 is a solid gold standard. Makes for a great trunk/truck gun for those instances where you need something. Perfect "something".

No a stock isn't just a stock. If you don't want to spend $100 on a Magpul SGA stock a great stock is the Hogue 12 in LOP stock around $50, you'll be surprised how much more control and comfort that stocks gives you, allows you to pull that firearm in much better and square up like you should be when shooting a shotgun, and the bonus is it gives somewhat of a pistol grip feel to the stock.

This is a good beat-up gun. Save your 500 or 590 for when you really need it. Everything that you are saying is true. it is quality gun for what it is. If you can find one.

@@jocy1878 In my area. Yes. I have the 590 A1. I was going to buy the 88 at that time before I saw the one that I bought. That was about three years ago. Now I cant find any of them.

As if a $350 mossberg 500 is somehow special. Literally the ONLY differences between the maverick 88 and M500 are the loaction of the safety and the pinned forend. The 590a1 is a whole different animal.

@@johnquinn4680 I know, but the Maverick is a quality shotgun for the price. If you can find one. The 590A1 is heavy. Not good for light weight work for me. Thanks for the comment.

Nice shotgun. I also have mav88 but the full 7+1 security model. Longer mag tube give me more ammo, but also allows me to easily attach accessories like flashlight and laser. Also longer mag tube is useful if you want to attach a bayonet later (yes not officially supported but easily doable with some work).

I got a cheap side saddle, the type that is like a sleeve. I accidentally got a 20 gauge one, so the shells REALLY squeeze in there if you put 12 g shells in. It helps because they won’t fly out when firing or walking. Just a tip if you’re balling on a budget.

Every time I chamber a round on this shotgun multiple u shot shells eject from below? The gun store helped me put new furniture but I feel like they would’ve told me is something was put back wrong. Any ideas

I came home with the 7+1 model last night. Im gonna put a pistol grip stock on it, possibly a choate side folder and the magpul forend like you did so i can get an mlok light mount. I have a 535 that got ran over, ill have to see if i can salvage and use the action bar assembly off that.

Do the shells drop out the side settle when you shoot your shotgun?

They do not. It's the most solid side saddle I have ever used.

I have! I need to do an update video. I changed the forend for a hogue forend. Heat shield. I larger front bead from Defender Tactical. And the Defender Tactical short shell adapter. They are the only ones that make an adapter to cycle short, 2¾, and 3 inch shells all at once. I will do an update soon.

@@drewledford9348 I have the same shell adapter on my shockwave. I'll probably get one for the 88 as well. I have the elzetta light mount and the polytac from streamlight on the 88. Both of my shotguns have the velcro cards from esstac. I want to change the front sight on the 88 and add a sling next. I'm using an old universal sling for now.

What would be the point? The bottom mag tube would still extend past the barrel by 1.5" out to 20" anyway making it look ridiculous and serving no purpose

@@IronChefBklyn no it doesn't. My Winchester 1300 defender is an 18" barrel with a 7 shot tube on it and it doesn't extend past the barrel.

@@weezem maybe but we're talking about Mossberg not Winchester. The Mav 88 20" Security barrel ends flush with the 7 shot tube. The 18.5" barrel version has a 5 shot tube. To get 2 more rounds in that tube it would have to be extended another 5.5 - 6 inches which would extend it well past the end of the barrel

@@IronChefBklyn please read my initial comment, I was in fact talking about the old Winchester and Remington shotguns. It's crazy how Mossberg can put a 7 shot tube on their 18.5" Mossberg 930s but can't do it for their pump guns 🥴 go waste someone else's time

DON'T DROP IT. It will dislodge the guide rails and you will have to disassemble it to get it to work again.
