This was more than I came for, but what a wonderful, logical and well spoken exploration! If only every youtube video was like this.. Please thank the author for me.

I appreciate the effort that you and Moss exert on our behalf to educate us on the mechanical and electrical aspects of our old British cars. My TR3A will be 59 this December and thanks to you and Moss, I am better prepared to take car of it. Thank you!

Loved the way u explained everything. So clear and thorough. I love learning this kind of stuff. I feel like a little kid sometimes, I don't know what it is. Ha. Gives me the chills when I think about the time it took in creating the technology to overcome the obstacles involved in the ultimate goal (converting the circular rotation of the motor to a back and forth motion instead...and all the other obstacles with it as well). Great video.

Love the video! It was helpful and informative. I took issue with one part though. Worm gears are not typically back driveable meaning the wiper shouldn't be able to push back on the motor to generate current.

Great video. Love the hands on the white background, makes you focus on what you are talking about and not on the shiny wrench they have on other vide. Great presentation. I subscribed!

THE BIG DEBATE! Up or Down? In the snow, if a newer car (2000+) get's it's wiper stuck to the windshield, can it damage the motor? I have seen most motors stop and then attempt to wipe a minute later. Once it is no longer frozen to the windshield, the wipers work fine. So if it can damage a motor, would it be better to leave the wipers up from the windshield? By the way, AWESOME VIDEO!!! 🙂

Great explanation and I learn a lot from all of your videos but they get long winded after awhile.

Thank you for this and the other very clear and instructive videos. I will never again eat a jellybean without recalling its crucial function in the wiper motor. If I'm having a bad day, I turn to the calming voice and expressive hands of any one of your Moss videos. Within minutes I feel better. Like the wiper motor, it works every time, and my troubles are neatly parked away! But I have a TC - how does its wiper motor work?

I was going to say you should be a teacher, then I realized you already are one. You knocked it out of the park on this. Covering the electrical along with the mechanical...? You are like the doctor who finds the real problem instead of just treating the symptom. The Dr. House of cars. Holistic Automotive Education.

My wipers come to a stop consistently in the middle of the windshield even though while they're running they have the correct span from the edge on the glass. I was trying to apply your explanation to the behaviour I'm seeing but I'm not quiet able to connect the dots unfortunately. If the regenerative braking functionality was broken on my motor I'd imagine my motor would coast and the wipers would come to a stop at various places on the windshield, depending on the timing of when I turned them off. But that's not what is happening - they come to a stop at the same spot every time, just not the correct spot (bottom of rotation)! Is it that I have regenerative braking, but somehow it's getting a different degree of resistance somehow so they consistently come to a stop after a short but consistent coast?

What's the source of power that passes through jelly switch? Even after when the power is cut off to the motor.

+sam davies You short circuited your wiper motor. Check the fuse that controls the wipers. It is probably burnt. You can try to change it, but if it keeps burning, you'll have to change the motor
@Ravenwest19
@Ravenwest19 8 жыл бұрын
wait, short circuit in motor? So it means every second in parking position motor consumes a lot of energy? Why doesn't wiring melt ?
@890slay
@890slay 8 жыл бұрын
That's what the little protruding chip at the back of the wheel is for- it cuts the secondary power source off as soon as the wipers travel all the way back down to their original position. The main power source is not constant either. When you turn the ignition on, power is sent to the wiper switch, but in order to close the circuit, you'd have to turn the wipers switch on to actuate the wipers motor.

So the jelly bean switch gets pushed and released every single revolution of the wiper motor; it must be some sort of mechanical switch, so why does in never fail or wear out after years of use.
