Your philosophy resonated with me when I watched one of your early videos. I sometimes wonder if there is a type of genetic memory for things like farming and love of the land. One of each set of grandparents grew up on a farm, while the other two were city dwellers. I took a chance and purchased an additional lot next to my suburban home (an older, semi-rural area until recently). I love having the space. Since I retired, many people tell me I should travel, or take up some trendy sport or hobby, when I all I really want to do is fix up my old house and create a beautiful garden where I can grow food and flowers, and enjoy a refuge from the stress of the modern world. I would definitely enjoy watching some storytelling videos featuring legends of Finland, but I have to admit the Irish tale holds a special place in my heart. Cheers!

Good treatment for mosquito bites is the common Plantago major's (finnish: Piharatamo) leaves. You take a leaf and rub it between your fingers or hands until it becomes darker green and mildly more stickier. Then just put the leaf on top of the bite and it should work in few seconds taking the itch away and helping it heal faster. You can find those in any common yard as it likes to grow on grass and easy to recognize because of its big leaves that hug the ground. It also works very well on stinging nettle's stings as those he will run into when spring comes. I have known this from a small kid and its still surprising when I tell someone to do it and they don't know about it at all.

Swedish is a national language mainly on paper, but in reality, you will get by much better in English. Swedish is widely spoken only on very specific areas, typically some small municipalities on the West coast. A typical, average Finn doesn't really understand Swedish, because there is no need to. But he/she typically will understand English to some extent.
@jaakkoohable Жыл бұрын
This is indeed true, at least from the viewpoint of this eteläsavolainen who did an RV trip to the west coast a few years back with my family. We planned to stay the night at a quaint little campground in a small village along the coastline, and I had to break out the Swedish I had learned in school some 25 years ago, as we quickly found that the nice lady that I asked driving instructions from, as well as the campground host, only spoke Swedish. They were very welcoming and hospitable, and the small wayside campground by the sea was amazing, so it was a nice experience. It did feel a bit like being abroad for this family from Eastern Finland, where no-one speaks Swedish. Even the street names aren't given Swedish names, which is typical for many other areas in Finland.

Yes, I am from Kymenlaakso and there are no Swedish speakers so even if we learn some Swedish at the school, I haven't ever had anyone with whom to speak it so I have forgotten the language... And when studying German it was very confusing because I find those two languages very similar. 😅 (I would be curious to hear what Angela says about this, if I remember correctly German is her mother tongue.) But everyone younger than 70/60 years old speaks English. Good luck for learning Finnish! If you find a good app for that, please let me know! My husband should continue his studies... 🙈

Hi, from California. So happy for the two of you and your little bundle of Joy. I’ve enjoyed being along for your journey, So sorry to hear of your grief of losing Moss. I was in love with him, too. Praying you’ll find another lovely dog again. I think Finland is wonderful, and wishing blessings for you there. It’s truly magical, sending love to you and your family.

Not saying we Finns aren’t prone to ’backseat-driving’, but I think what may have happened is that a well-meaning mob of Finns saw a soft spoken ”Irish folk singer” in trouble 🥶 and rushed to comment simultaneously. Then due to YT lag and *ahem* some hastiness/not doing due diligence by reading other comments first, led to a tautological tsunami of unsolicited advice about frozen windscreen procedures. 😅 My question is: What has surprised you the most in Finland, during your time here?

Thank you! Yes, driving in a car is far more dangerous than being outdoors. Eating the Standard American Diet and not moving enough kills so many more people than ticks, weather or any challenges you will get there! We loved your storytelling videos! They were great right before bedtime!

Another great video. Daniel, I discovered your channel not long ago, and have been binge-watching all the videos. I'm retiring next year, moving to 10 acres land, hoping to grow as much food as I can (if deer permits). I love that you care so much about the animals, what a nice change from the typical homesteading video.

The videos on this channel are so heartwarming. It is interesting hearing Angela speak on this one. Few Germans can hide their German accent, but hers is almost undetectable when speaking English, and for the few Finnish words we heard, it is clear that she is doing well at the pronunciation and accent. However, her beloved husband still has some work to do in that department! :-) Nevertheless, the healthy, outdoor lifestyle clearly keeps him looking young!

I live in Wales. I like how people have written to you to apologise for giving you too much advice and also to let you know how glad they are you have come to Finland. How lovely of them. I think you have a brilliant way of presenting yourself and of being true to who you are. You have a lovely wife and child and make wonderful videos. You also look 20 years younger than your actual age!

Ah Daniel, it is so nice to hear you talk about your lovely family, having watched you over the years from when you were on your own. I really like your perspective on how a survival priority like chopping wood reduces the burden of choice in your life. Your explanation of your daily experiences with nature and life as a process to be appreciated, without expecting happiness and success to be tied to an end date or completion of a project is a great way to look at life. I can imagine how busy you and Angela are in the happy chaos of caring for an infant. All the very best in Finland, and keep making those videos.

I have lived in England for over 40 years but like you, l still feel Scottish, as that's where I'm from but l prefer to live in England. So what you say resonates with me. I'm looking to retire in Portugal though, as l have been going since 2009 and fell in love with the country. I always feel at home. I'm sure I'll be met with challenges but I'm prepared for this. I'm also learning the language and. know enough to get by but want to further that if l can. 😂😂. Thanks for sharing. 😊

I just found this channel and it’s fun to binge your videos. Looking forward to many more! I didn’t know the Swedish immigration system was so limiting, but it’s their loss I guess. Turku and the South-Western parts of Finland are quite lovely and probably the best climate in Finland to grow food.

Nice video looking forward to seeing Finnish food culture from the garden. Would recommend cleaning and sorting the fishing gear in the shed and looking into Finnish food culture related to smoking fish. Have seen some cool mini sheds deployed for purely this purpose and know some culinary experts you can connect with around Turku if smoking 🐟🐠🐟 tickles the pallet...and yes sometimes us Finns can sound rude and super direct... IV been kicked out from bars in Europe doing simple things like: could I please have a pint of your finest ale sir translated directly to Finnish: Olut 🍺😂 with optional kiitos

A friend of my mine gave me the tip to watch your channel, you give us grumpy Finns inspiring positivity it seems🙂 As a small veggie, plant and berry grower I was wondering what food you plan to grow on your farm? I will plant tomato seeds inside my house during spring time in order for them to grow ready to be planted in my little green house. Farming season is very short here so. Do you have a cold cellar under your house? Good for storing food if you plan to preserve it to last along the year😊 Will you farm your land with a tractor or just with hand tools?

Hello! I think with your ambitions and goals in mind, you've moved to absolutely to the right country. As you probably know and been noted many many times, we Finnish are worker nation. We work hard for our living and our vacation times we work even harder (liberating stuff at our summer cabins, yards etc.) And living of the land is a national trait that everyone has. Even in high density cities where people live in apartment buildings, we still get the urge to grow something: herbs, cherry tomatoes, chilies etc. (hopefully not cannabis like my upstairs neighbor LOL). Personally, I think I was on the 6th grade in elementary school when my friend and me decided that we're gonna spend a week in the forest, and we did. We had no food or anything with us but we already had the knowledge back then how to live in the wilds so that was a no problem for us. Returned back to home well fed and happy after a week. :D (just a reminder story how early we can start living in the wilds). I hope that you will enjoy (sometimes anger gets shit done tho) the labour and challenges that face you here but it's definitely possible. Love seeing your updates about your life and challenges, keep up the good spirits and work! 😊PS: Oh and I cannot wait for you to experience the early spring/summer mornings here, that is something special!

I can't wait to see how you're transforming the old house and the property into a productive and functional smallholding. I grew up in the Finnish countryside and over the years I've seen so many old houses falling into disrepair because old people are dying, young people are moving to cities in search of work, and the houses are abandoned. It is also demanding to maintain your house in a good condition if you don't have the skills or time to do so yourself and don't have the money to have it done professionally. Or at least my family was struggling with that. So, I'm delighted to see that at least this house and property is getting a new life. 🙂I only discovered your channel recently, but from what I have seen, I have no doubt you have the skills to fix it. It's also interesting to follow your journey into learning how everything works in a new country. Best of luck to your family!

Now you've gone and done it; I can't get that song out of my head! Ha! Thanks for the 10 question episode today---good responses and reasoning behind them. I had a sad moment when finding out your wonderful dog has gone to the Fairy Land, but I know he went with lots of love around him and would have appreciated his resting place. Yup, you have a gift of the story teller in you and, perhaps, a wee bit of 'blarney' too??? All the best to you and your small family over there In Finland.

Daniel, it occurred to me - you are a storyteller in all that you do. Writing, composing songs and videos, of course ... but even in all the work of your hands. And I think all storytellers love the *process*, more than the finish line, as you say. [My, how I wish I had a life like you are living! I tried but financial and healthcare needs pulled me back into The System, for now. My dad was very much like you in his love of independence and problem-solving, and so my childhood was an adventure perhaps like your little one will experience - everything in a happy rustic state with ongoing development!] Angela, I love your blog posts too - please know we are all delighted by you, and thank you for sharing a bit of who you are. Finally, if I can vote for your folktale videos, I will! I'll go back and make sure I hit the Like button on each of them. And - I loved your book "Beyond the Gate", and hope someday you publish more!

I think you've picked the right country. Finland has an attitude of "do it yourself unless you legally can't" - I've learned so much about plumbing, electrics, car maintenance, and carpentry since I moved here from the UK. And although the Finns may be somewhat dour and uncommunicative, they certainly perk up and start talking when you ask them for advice on maintenance work. By the way, have you tried "avanto" yet?
