I'm obsessed with the piping technique of the "vintage style cakes" as the internet is calling them. But I don't see the art in smoothing buttercream, drizzling some kind of sauce on top, adding dollops of buttercream and tipping with a bunch of food items. 🤔 to me this takes much more talent than the sleek modern cake looks. I'm always more impresses by this

I think the frosting they use is a lot lighter as well, it almost has the consistency of whipped cream.

Getting the color combinations right for the "Lambeth overpiping" is a very important talent. It's not a skill, because you either have the eye, like this cake artist, or you don't. These are beautiful combinations. The modern cakes with the fondant-smooth buttercream are a very difficult acquired skill, but the candies or food topping a drip cake don't impress me, either.

As one who has been a fully self-taught cake decorator for almost 50 years, I love these cakes! This is what was popular when I learned how to decorate cakes with a very small Wilton starter kit and an old book from our small local library (which only had black and white photos). There were no classes in my area, nor even anyone I could ask how to do anything, and I didn't buy my first modern how-to decorating book until I had been practicing for about a year. I had already taught myself how to pipe flowers, leaves, and borders, but until I got my first Wilton book (with all colored photos! ☺️), I had no idea of so many of the various piping and decorating mediums and techniques, and I've been hooked ever since! The year I spent learning to get a perfectly smooth buttercream finish and piping flowers laid the foundation for me to learn so much of what I learned from that first Wilton book I got. But even though I've been very successful at it, I still wonder how much more (and easier!) I could have learned if the internet had been around back then. But I still feel that, by me learning on my own as I did, it made me a better decorator. I also taught myself how to work with making (freehand) 'fruits and vegetables' with marzipan (I hate the taste of fondant, so I refuse to use it). But my favorite part of cake decorating is piping all kinds of flowers, leaves, and borders, so this video encompasses all I love about cake decorating! I've never been a fan of cakes "decorated" with drips, cookies, candy, and mounds of frosting on top, partly because I don't think that takes any real talent, and partly because I just don't like how they look. But making a tiered cake with piped flowers is my favorite! I've done 1 and 2 tiers, up to as many as 8 tiers for a wedding cake, and every thing in between. But if the internet and videos like this one had been around when I got started, what a difference it would have made for me. These are some beautiful cakes, and I'm so glad to see this kind of piping and decorating making a comeback!
