I'm impressed by how much variety were featured in this list. There were no country repeats, and they managed to keep both locations old and modern. Looks like people have in all times and places for various reasons seen value in underground facilities.

Coober Pedy: When I visited there in 1972 the only above-ground buildings were a church and lots of car-ports (roof and no more than 2 walls) for car parking. Above-ground dwellings in Coober Pedy are relatively recent. And yes, most of the underground homes started as mines. It is so much cooler underground! Many people have found valuable opals while extending their homes or digging a new closet.

I don't understand what makes politicians and so called "important people" lives more important than us regular civilians. I hope if something happens to all of us, they die right along with us. Not like our taxes aren't paying for their safety while we are left to face doomsday. People forget this world wasn't built just for them. Makes me sick to my stomach.

I got to number 2 and was ready to bitch about Montreal not being on the list... But it's number 1! Nice job! Having spent a lot of time in Reso you can walk through most of Montreal underground... It's massive and parts of it are very artistic. When it's 30 below in January it makes for a huge difference!
@Top10Archive8 жыл бұрын
Haha, glad to not disappoint! Montreal is the closest to me on our list (Michigan), definitely on my bucket list!! What's the weather like in the underground when it's 30 below on the surface?
@JeffCfreeradiorevolution8 жыл бұрын
Top10Archive It's warm... room temperature pretty much (unless you catch a draft from doorway leading outside). The underground city is very necessary as it gets pretty unbearable outside in the winter. Everything is connected; metros, malls, office towers, universities, theaters etc... Definitely come here in summer though! Much better time (unless you love winter sports).

The Reso is disconnected and much smaller then Toronto's underground city the PATH. The PATH has over 30 kilometres worth of shopping, services and entertainment. According to the Guinness World Records, it’s the largest underground shopping complex in the world. Providing a safe haven from the weather - cold and snow in the winter and humidity in the summer - over 200,000 commuters use the PATH on a business day. The PATH links to public transit and over 50 office towers and a dozen hotels.

Google it, it is officially the worlds largest underground complex ever. I've lived here all my life, and during those 48 years, I still get lost down there, it's that big!

I visited Beijing's underground city on a diplomatic tour in the 1980s. We entered a retail store and a display case was slid back revealing stairs going down into the ground. The tunnels and facilities were in much better condition than you show but I don't think it was open to tourists back then.

2 places I'm surprised not to see on the list here are the Vietnamese holdovers from the war, which originated as tunnels, and became an entire city, and the Tunisian town which became Tatooine in the Star Wars movies. I've understood it wasn't just the home the Skywalkers lived in, but the entire town that's subterranean.

The city of Boise, Idaho has a pretty extensive tunnel system under the city from old cold war bunker evacuation routes for government employees. At one time it connected between all the major buildings that used to house anything of importance from the high school to the court house. Not technically a full city though. At the moment it's just used as an underground thoroughfare for state workers, and houses shops and restaurants for them. Most of the outer routes all got cut off post 9/11.

Denver airport has an amazing underground network of interconnected tunnels and buildings. A lot more than just what you'd need for an airport to run efficiently. You can run semi trucks through the tunnels with room to spare. I'd like to live there, if anything happens. Like, say a zombie apocalypse, or sometimes sort of man made plague.

Underground is like air conditioning without the electrical cost. Given air conditioning and heat make up the majority of electrical use energy conservation using underground structures might help in reducing carbon footprints. Surface ecosystems might benefit. Many uncomfortable areas might be made into living spaces. Where would you rather live during an ice age surface or cave? If things warm up free air conditioning might look good.

The idea of underground bunkers/safe zones for top "government officials" is really kind of backwards. If most everyone else might die in a nuclear attack, the officials need to be saved so they can continue running everything afterwards. Who and what are they going to be running, if there are no citizens left? Are they going to do the physical work/repair/rebuilding themselves? If it is a military conflict, are they going to take up arms, and fight? I thought not....
