I had a close friend at a rival school we played against in baseball. Our senior year, my friend was one hit short of his team's all-time hits record coming into our final game. In his first at-bat, I struck him out. He grounded out his second at-bat and, again, in his third at bat. In the bottom of the final inning, we were ahead by a wide margin with two outs when he came to the plate for his final at-bat as a high school player. I called time out, and told my catcher that I was going to throw only fast balls. I didn't tell him why. As I stood on the mound, I gave my friend a subtle nod that only baseball players understand. On the third pitch my friend hit a MONSTER homerun. As he rounded the bags, I threw my rosin bag at him with a smile and yelled, "You're welcome!!" He pointed back at me, gesturing thanks, as he stepped on home plate. We won 7-1 that day, and eventually, the regional championship. My friend never played organized baseball again. Months later, I learned my friend had also set the All-time CONFERENCE RBI record when he hit that homerun against us. I want to think his final memory of his time as a player left my friend with life long pride of being his school's best hitter. Last I heard, another player at his alma mater had broke my friend's record in 2019...24 YEARS later. For nearly a quarter century, people saw my friends name at the top of a very long list of players. Sure, its a small thing in the grand scheme of the world, but it was something special for him. He still calls me every Spring during the baseball season, addressing me as "Aido", a play on my nickname as a player, "First Aid" (I was an All-Star Relief Pitcher) and the name of the Greek God of respect, humility and gratitude (Aidos). I call him "Mile". A play on his first name, and because that's about how far the homerun went...and also as in, "gave him a hit, and he took a MILE" :) Good times.

We (my extended family-parents, grandparents, uncles and such) were into sports of all kinds, watching and participating. The one thing the adults always tried to help us understand (we were children) was sportsmanship was the most important aspect of the sport, not winning, not losing, but playing your best game with the right attitude. If we behaved like poor-sports, we were told how inappropriate our attitude and perhaps we'd like to either change our attitude or forfeit playing the next game or two, thereby letting our team down, which was humiliating for real.

Great video, but the high jumpers weren't told that they could split the gold. The first dude in the cap asked "can't we just split it?". This was after being dead on with eachother for a while in the competition. The ref said "well, it's possible" and they just looked at eachother with a kind of "jupp that's good". Props to them for being great friends, great athletes, and for making history as the first split gold in athletics for over a 100 years.

I used to play rugby as a teenager and I was tiny... still am... in rugby standards... at 1.67m (5ft 5in) and I was running the flank with the ball and the +2m /+7ft tall full back from the other team came and annihilated me. Knocked me out! My nose was broken, my jaw was cracked and my right knee was a mess... and I had a concussion but the guy kept with me including in the hospital. A few hours later when I regained consciousness in hospital, he was there. We became friends after that but I eventually decided my stout but short body wasn't built for rugby! :D

I love this, I’ve had a moment as a umpire. I was umpiring a high school baseball game last year for a team that most of the players had never played before. After one particular hit, I noticed a women who was way more than excited than everyone else. I assumed it was his mother (the player who had just gotten the hit) I looked at her and asked “is that his first hit?” She jumped up wjd down and said yes. I asked “ever?” She said yes again, so I switched out baseballs with the pitcher and gave it to the players mother after the game. I felt really good that night🙂
