I have a 6 y/o, uncut male cat that lives strictly in doors. He has been free fed his entire life. He does not gorge himself, usually doesn’t even eat it all in one sitting. he’s at a perfect weight, never had any health problems, don’t have to worry about him freaking out 5 minutes before mealtime. He regulates himself. I see no issues with it

He also never acts out, and gleefully keeps the house free of rodent, bug, lizard, and anything else he can catch

And I’m feeding him veterinary grade food, so it’s not like he’s just refusing to eat it. He loves it, I guess he just likes to watch his figure in case he ever runs across a lady cat

I personally like to feed my cats two meals a day with a few treats - I don't leave food out for them all the time beyI am afraid that would make them fat. All of my cats are in pretty good shape.

yes, that's the big risk of having food out all the time unless the food is weighted out and then once the daily ration is gone there is no more until the following day (in which case it isn't really out all the time!)

my cats have dry food all day long and wet food 3 times a day. They go outside. They have more wet food in summer. They are fit, they actully need a little bit more of weight ! they run too much. But i'd like to give them better quality food !

I have 5 cats, they have nonstop access to dry food and get wet food in the morning. all of them share and non of the cats are overweight so it seems like that works for me and my family, they do have access to the garden to play and hunt. non of the cats steal food. but before this I had them on limited food weight of portions, the cats where crabby all the time, stole food from my plate, tried to steal eachothers food, where fighting eachother. the difference in weight of dryfood eaten between both situations was about 50 grams a week. aka pretty much nothing (and like 150 grams a week late fall before it is getting colder) so unless one of the cats needs a special diet I think I'll just keep the food out. if one of them needs a special diet I'll probably get them like a chip cat flap so that 1 cat can't enter the room where the food is at and have them be able to enter another room also with a chip cat flap for there room. that said what works for me might not work for others.

if that works then great! the biggest thing is ana awareness of weight and adjusting as needed based on this. is something is working then change just for the sake of it certainly makes little sense

@@OurPetsHealth yea I try to keep a very close eye on there weight, seeing it is a great indication of when they ain't feeling too well, seeing they can go in the garden it also is a good indicator of when they get wurms even before other physical symptoms show. and all it takes is some treats to get them on the scale anyway.

they are my happiness so I should be theres. above that they are part of my world but I pretty much am there world so gotta take extra good care of them. that also means I'm the crazy person that has catflaps in nearly every door in the house.

Hey Dr Alex I hope you have a wonderful Christmas 🎄 and happy new year my dear friend..as Christmas 🎄 draws close I dread it because as you know I lost my most prize possession little Arnold he passed Dec 9th in my arms I just knew that he would be here for his birthday but he got sick overnight and just went down hill the week before and the week he passed he was in bad shape there for two weeks it will never be the same without him and Bigfoot I would give all my earthly possessions to have them back but as we know it doesn't work that way but I'm just sick with grief just broken hearted and crushed to the max. Every morning since he passed I wake up calling his name and then I realize he is gone I never was so alone before, we'll it's super cold 🥶 here it's Below zero here and slick outside from the snow ❄️ my power went off last night around midnight a big white pine tree 🌲 uprooted in my neighbor yard and took out the power lines but thankfully got it restored today but anyway wanted you to know that I really appreciate you and all of your help over the years with my dogs and I will always continue to watch your videos just like you said pets are family you are too my dear friend

This dude i dont care about nutrition value ive had three cats ive let me cats free good all day they eat when they want and mayhe once a day i hivr a little wet food and my cats have lived till 18 id rather have food out so my cat dosent bother me at night i dont wanna be woke up
