Some great honesty in this video, for someone who makes their living from this clay to criticize the Clay companies is really very brave and incredibly honest, she doesnt have to do this, it is incredibly helpful. Thank you for taking the time to do this for us, ignore the moaners, having pieces break is all part of learning the craft lol

Hey Ron, Thank you so much for saying that! I appreciate your kind words more than you know. I do my very best to be as honest as possible, because I feel it ultimately brings the highest value to people who love this medium as much as I do. Perhaps I could have been more concise in this particular video as I am in most of my videos, and it would have appeased the moaners a little more, but it is what it is... After 13 years teaching polymer clay professionally I still am answering the same questions about breaking polymer clay and how to choose the right brands and bake it properly so that the user has the best learning experience possible. I honestly wish the manufacturers would do a better job of either removing or fixing low quality clays and giving customers better instructions so I could move on to more exciting ideas, but perhaps I would be working myself out of a job! LOL 😀

@@PolymerClayTutor I agree!! They should at least have a disclaimer on package that states “Baking times are suggested guidelines. For best results, visit our web site for more thorough guidelines.” In this day and age, most everyone has access to internet and at least they would know that if they didn’t do additional research, they kind of have to expect subpar results!

Yes, Ron, very well said!!....Don’t even get me started on how rude and entitled people appear to be when they get whiney and start complaining about the ABUNDANCE of FREE advice and tutoring that an expert KZbin artist and teacher is generous enough to give to them as complete strangers just because they didn’t get their desired result. As if they shouldn’t have to deal with any kind of learning curve! Ugh! What a turn-off.

First time ever using polymer clay and I followed your advice and baked mine longer. I baked a trial piece first and my son, who is 6'6" could not break it! It bent a little but Went back into shape. My candy canes turned out perfect! The white was still white and no fears of them breaking! So happy!

I loved this incredibly down-to-earth video, and your explanations completely make sense. It is frustrating trying to manage so many variables when just figuring out a craft in the very beginning, so I appreciate your very simple, straight-forward message-get an oven thermometer, and use it! And check it often!!! Also, be patient while you learn, as there will be mistakes! I’ve started trying to embrace the mistakes and have discovered that I can make an interesting and unexpected piece of mixed media art using broken pieces of a clay project, so it’s not a complete loss. Thanks so much for your honesty and patience with us newbies! You are an amazing teacher!! :)

Not to bore you with the same question again but.... I understand the process and the instructions you give but I still have some questions. 1. Does the thickness matter? If thicker, say sculptures not jewelry do you bake longer? 2. When you have thinner and thicker pieces together do you use the same principle and bake for an hour? 3. When baking in stages would you do an hour each time or shorten the time in between bakes until the final bake for an hour? I hope repeating the same old baking question doesn't bother you too much 😄!!

First time using this type of clay. Made a flower, about 6" long, and a butterfly. Flower, petals and all, came out beautifully. A wing, however, fell off the butterfly. What's the best way to fix it? The butterfly is about 2" x 2", wings are about 2 mm thick. Baked for an hour at 300. Since it's a polymer I thought of using rubber cement glue, hot glue, or crazy glue. Just need it to hold long enough to paint. Acrylic paint can give it a weak bond.

thanks so much for your videos. Been baking all my pieces for a solid hour and love the results! I did have a question. I saw a video where someone set (pressed down) a cabochon into polymer clay on a ceramic tile, cut around it and removed excess clay, beautifully decorated it with more polymer, painted with mica, etc. But, they didn't show removing the piece FROM the tile before baking. I don't know if that was edited out of their video or removing wasn't necessary. DOES it have to be lifted off the tile before baking or will it release from the tile when it hardens during the baking process? Sorry if you've answered this somewhere else. I appreciate you!

you are so right Cindy! people don't believe just how off their oven may actually be, and even oven thermometers so if you sell your stuff, put two in! I do always worry about undercooking, even after an hour I'm afraid my pieces may break later after sale. Is there any way to tell if a bead in particular is cured long enough as you can't really try to bend it etc. Maybe a way to tell when sanding?Also, I have also accidently left my faux gem beads I'm the oven... I fell asleep..yes. for 5 hours. hahahaah AND it was perfectly fine. so I guess then I know they must be done. ;) So everyone stop worrying she knows what she's talking about! If you burnt it, you cooked to hot not too long. No such thing as too long. Thanks Cindy!

I guess I read about the proper baking before I started working with polymer clay ! You are absolutely right ! The temperature is the key. All though if you bake it longer than the package says, at the right temperature, you'll get a good hard piece. I only burned something once ! when my husband changed the temperature of the oven to 400° and I didn't catch it ! Other than that I bake my pieces on 275° for approximately 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the thickness of my piece.

Hi Cindy and Doug. Here in the UK a lot of free standing (not fitted into the counter) ovens have a different temperature scale. We go by a 'gas mark' that starts at a dot for barely on (warming plates and such), then S (no idea what for!), then numbers 1 to 9. So no temperature markings at all! There are conversion tables but these are just estimates. My old oven didn't have a light in it either so reading the thermometer was blooming hard work and hit or miss! I used to bake at slightly less than S - but probably not for long enough for the big pieces having watched this video. Thanks for sharing this one.
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 8 жыл бұрын
Oh geez, I can see the problem! I had no idea, people were still using ovens like that. Btw I think the s means slow... for a slow burning oven like they had when they used wood to cook with. In cases like this, I think buying a small convection oven would be the best thing to do if the funds are available. I can't imagine trying to bake clay if you can't control the temperature precicely.

Contrary to some people's comments, I think this video has a good way of explaining it all. Cindy is clearly tired of all the repetitive questions and who can blame her? Even with all this explaining theres still people asking about temperature. Read your clay package!! it depends on what brand of clay you have, just bake for longer and watch for oven spikes. Although I have always baked much longer than recommended, it's still at the correct temperature and usually covered. I did like the way she explained it using the visualization of a pillar candle. There are still some experienced clay artists who don’t always tell you the correct information! When I start to teach, I would like my students to watch this video! It's useful for all beginners and those people complaining about burnt, or indeed, broken or cracked pieces...... So thank you Cindy! I personally think you did a great job! ❤

Sculpey 3 is a very brittle clay, even when baked properly. I would suggest you mix it with other brands like Premo, Souffle, Cosclay, Cernit, Fimo, etc. to make it stronger. Use way more of the other brand, otherwise you will just make your stronger brand weak. :)

Don't buy one of those "polymer clay ovens". They are just a cheap crappy toaster oven that isn't even suited for baking polymer clay because the opening is too shallow, they don't hold the temperature very evenly and they often don't even have timers that go for 1 hour. Just use the largest toaster oven or counter top oven that you can afford. I use a Kitchenaid Countertop Convection Oven that has worked beautifully for me for quite a few years now. (I have a review on KZbin). Here is a link to the one I use if you're interested in checking it out. amzn.to/2Ngbbnn (Amazon Affiliate Link)

Hello, I know this is an older video but with all the testing you have done with baking, I wonder if you might have the answer to a question I am having a hard time finding any info on? I do small, super detailed sculptures with Premo clay and I have been finding it is easier to do 2-3 bakes to lock in parts as I go. I know you can rebake sculpey, but I was wondering if you can do 10 minute cures (just enough to harden that outer layer) or if it is best to do the full cure for each fresh part each time it is baked? I've seen some people mention that doing short partial cures can lead to the clay being weaker in the long run even if you will ultimately end up baking the full time needed, but it always seems like they are going by third person accounts rather than any actual experience. The reason I would prefer to go with shorter partial cures if it doesn’t effect strength is I find even with proper tenting and insulation with tile in my pans that I tend to get slightly darker colors (especially on lighter clay colors) on the parts that have gotten 2-3x the baking times of the pieces in comparison to the pieces that are added in for the final bake. Thank you in advance if you can offer any advice.

Hi Cindy, not sure if this is the right place to ask, and I have been unable to find any videos on it. You did mention in a much earlier video something about a bead you made using a die cut. I recently purchased a big shot plus and do have a few steel rule dies. Is it possible to die cut polymer clay and then use the liquid clay to adhere the die cut piece to a bigger flat piece of clay? Also is it possible to adhere die cut cardstock, aluminum foil or wrapping paper to baked polymer clay, or would it still leach out any moisture even though the clay has been baked. Thank you so much.

Yes. Polymer clay bakes at 230F-300F range depending on brand, but paper will combust at 451F. Which means... as long as you don't let the paper/cardstock touch an element or the sides of the oven, the paper/cardstock will be fine if you bake it under your clay. Do make sure you are very smart and careful about it though...you don't want a fire in your oven.

Love your tutorials and I understand the science and following instructions. Having made the multiple mistakes you've talked about and probably will make many more. I love being crafty. The one problem I have come across that I still haven't found the solution for is: When I make a multiple color item, I bake according to directions but when I take it out of the oven, one color will be runny or bubbled or sticky whereas the other colors cured perfectly. Same thickness throughout the project. This has happened several times, specifically with the greens and blues. I do have an oven thermometer. I am doing this just for fun with my 5 year old granddaughter and 8 year old grandson. yeah, I should probably contact the manufacturer because maybe their consistency is off, just thought I'd ask if this is common?

It's not a silly question. Sure a little fluctuation won't matter too much. Try to fluctuate on the higher side than the lower side. The hotter the piece bakes at (without scorching) the stronger the piece is. Make some test pieces to find that sweet spot for your oven. Good luck!

Fimo is actually 230F but either way, you can mix the two and bake at the temp that the bulk of the clay is at. If it is a 50/50 mix, I'd bake at the higher temp of 275F. The Fimo might darken a bit but at least it would be strong.

Ok. So I'm now on my second B/D Digital Convection oven. The company replaced the first one that was at least 40 degrees off. The first never got to temp and this one takes about 30 minutes to get up to temp. Pretty discouraged. I know I'm new but could it be that the oven thermometers I'm buying are taking a long time to get up to temp? There's supposed to be a digital thermometer inside the oven that works, right? The other ones just take 30 minutes to work. I'm to the point that I will sacrifice my real oven which works great. Anyway, now it's been trying to get up to 275 for about 30 minutes and when setting the temp I'm now setting it at 320 to get 275. Which is ok if that's what I have to do I just love this clay. So I am wondering how the convection part changes things. Do you still use that? Or should I just go with the bake and not the convection? Arrrrggg

Hi Mam, thanks for all your videos. You explain everything very nicely!! Recently i have changed my oven. But its not conviction oven. Its an OTG. I am using bake mode. But since i have started using this new oven i am seeing hair line cracks in them. I am just feeling helpless. Please help me.. what the issue could be? ☹️ Also i had conditioned the clay very well.

Sad story: I bought an oven thermometer and hung it off the rack of the oven to bake a few small items. It showed my oven's temp gauge to be extremely off (75 degrees), but I decided to trust the thermometer and adjusted the oven. Unfortunately I burned my creations to a crisp. I believe the problem is that the temperature is uneven. I'm going to try to place the oven thermometer as close to my baking pan as possible. I might also try the convection feature on my oven. Sad story, but hopefully this will help someone else.

I know people who have had clay burn before but I think it wasnt polymer clay but actual clay and I think thats where a lot of that fear comes from. Like you say, I've never burnt it before but I have had Sculpy soft, the like fleshy colored one get much darker but that was after like three or four times backing at like 15 to 30 minutes each. I am so relieved to know that I can get away with long bake times and pre baking to set it without worrying about it being over baked later on. Thank you so much for this information!

And I get the frustration over the gas stove compared to electric. I used to deliver propane, got those kinds of questions all the time. How much hotter does my gas stove get than an electric stove. And as you pointed out275 is 275 whether gas or electric.

Hello, I just started using polymer at for the first time yesterday. I am using a mold that can actually be placed in the oven. The first one I did turned out great. It didn't break when I tried to bend it. The second one did break. I used the same mold, temp, time, and clay on the second one. I also let the oven preheat and get to a steady heat of 275 (I have a thermometer in the oven) nothing changed... now I did attempt to bend it only an hour after taking it out of the oven (it was already cool though). How long are you supposed to leave it alone after removing it from the oven? I am using Sculpey Premo brand. The instructions say 275 for 30 min per 1/2 inch or 15 min for 1/4. The item I'm making had about 3/8... so kind of in between. So I left it in for about 20 min. I also sat the mold on a piece of printer paper and a ceramic tile with a foil tent over it. What do you think is making it break upon bending?

Hi, I'm a complete newbie with clay. I've started incorporating it with my jewelry and with I mean "just started" like yesterday, lol. So yeah, it took me forever to get the hang of it, but I finally did, yay. But I made a very thin bezel like piece and when I picked it up this morning it broke when I tried to bend it to see if it was hard enough. So, from what your saying I'm gathering it didn't. Are long enough? Or was it too thin? I'm sorry for asking, from your video I can see your inundated with questions about this😳 I totally get the frustration. My thing is art via painting and I get stuff like this when trying to teach it. But I'd really love to add clay into my jewelry and it's so beautiful! So I'm asking you because every video I've watched is from someone's kitchen or something. And from one professional to another I'm not sure I trust their advice. So whatever advice you could give me is really appreciate it:). Thank you for putting up your channel. Not everyone appreciates that your teaching an art for free while in reality it would cost a lot of money to take classes for this. So again thanks for everything you do😊 Take care and I look forward to hearing from you, Lauryl

Thank you so much Laury for your kind comment! In regards to your thin piece breaking, it is not about being thing. I make tons of piece that are paper thin, yet strong enough that you can break or tear them without a real struggle. It is rather one or more of these three things: 1. weak brand of clay 2. temperature not hot enough 3. not baked long enough for all the particles to melt together in the clay. I have multiple videos on longer baking, using oven thermometers, preventing burning, choosing the right brand, that will definitely help you in your journey. I would suggest you take an afternoon and binge watch my channel... that will give you a good foundation to start with. I also have a blog (it is older but we are currently building a new one) at www.polymerclaytutor.com where I have more information, a beginners course and many paid tutorials that will help as well. Hi, Thanks for this, I bake alot of things in aluminum baking pans filled with baking soda. I do this because the delicate shaping needs support so I pack the soda and fill around and overtop of the form to see if I can keep everything from flopping over. Then I put a matching aluminum pan for a lid My question is do you have any experience with this & do you think I might need to adjust the temp (I use kato and souffle the most- will soon start using premo) I usually bake longer than recommended because I learned that its the temp that counts. I do use an oven thermometer but I still want to be sure things last but don't' get floppy thanks

I`m struggling still with pieces not baking properly/snapping when done - I`m using Fimo soft, I got a thermostat and bake on 110 degrees Celsius, for 1h but still they snap super easily (piece thickness 2mm) :( Also, do you let your pieces cool down whilst on the baking tile or do you move them from the tile to a cooler surface to cool down more quickly? Thank you, Lisa :)

Thank you so much One question Is the same time for one piece or three piece? Thanks
@barockeuse
@barockeuse 5 жыл бұрын
Yes. Because it is the temperature of each piece which is needed for the polymerisation. So it is the temperature inside the oven which is important. But if you try to bake a very thick piece with a very thin piece, it will take a longer time for the thick piece to reach it's polymerisation temperature. So let the two pieces bake during the time adapted to the thickest piece, the thin one will support it. As she says, you can even let the pieces bake for 1 hour, the pieces will be more resistant and also more flexible. But the main thing is to never let the temperature pass over the maximum indicated on the packet of the clay you've used.

Hi the plaquing happens in translucent clay usually because of air or moisture. Make sure to pull on your sheets of clay to remove air, and avoid moisture and humidity wherever possible. Also consider testing different brands to see which one works best for your environment.

So I just watched this video and I finally have an answer to how long to bake. My other questions are, some clays say 275 degrees while others say 230, i.e. sculpey original and III vs. sculpey premo. Is this accurate, and if so, how can one combine the two regarding baking temps?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah each brand has a different temperature it needs to bake at to properly cure. If you decide to mix brands together, you will need to play around with the temperature to figure out what will work best for your new custom blend. Keep in mind that polymer clay should be baked as hot as possible but not so hot that it burns. SO if the bulk of your clay mixture needs to be baked at 275F and the rest of it 230F then you probably will be able to bake at pretty close to 275F. But if the bulk of your mix is a brand that bakes at 230F than you won't be able to go too much higher than the 230F or it will likely scorch. Put on your virtual lab coat and do a little testing! :)

Hello I just watched your video. I am a sculptor but I do giant monuments classical realism. I’m actually thinking about making some wands for grandchildren. I thought wouldn’t it be cute to make creatures on the end of a wooden stick. My question is can I put a wooden stick in the oven with a creature sculpted to the stick? @PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor Жыл бұрын
Polymer clay is perfect for baking onto wood and making wands with. I would use Cosclay. It is strong and flexible after baking and much safer for kids to play with than Apoxie Sculpt (and cheaper and easier to use). Polymer clay bakes at a very low temp 230F - 325F depending on brand and wood needs to be much hotter at over 500F before it starts to burn... so it's fine to bake clay on. Just so you know, a chopstick is a great 'stick' to use for the center of your wand. It's stiff, and just the right length. Have fun!

I made mini candy canes for my first try at polymer clay. They came out okay I guess. Are they supposed to be hard & stiff, or somewhat rubbery & flexible? My canes are about 1/16 of an inch thick & 3/4" tall. I baked them for 15 minutes on 275⁰. I did not preheat my little toaster oven first, but I added 5 more minutes to the baking time to make up for it. So....mine are somewhat stiff & flex without cracking. Is that how they are supposed to come out?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor Жыл бұрын
Hi there, polymer clay once it is baked, is still pretty flexible... it won't come out hard like resin or other hard plastics. Some brands are stiffer than others but especially when the pieces are thin, they will never be hard as a rock. As far as baking, I would still bake them for a little longer, even though they are on the small side... especially if they are going to be played with, because you may find that they could break over time. I bake all my pieces (even paper thin ones) for 45-60 mins using an oven thermometer so I know it's the correct temp for the brand. I have tons of videos on baking polymer clay that should help you improve your work. Have fun and good luck!

It involves several separate "noodle" shaped pieces of clay that are attached parallel/horizontally (hope that makes sense). Originally I drilled a hole through the noodles (post-baking) and attached with a metal wire, but the noodles break fairly easily after the hole is drilled since the circumference of the noodles is so small. I was wondering if you've had this issue and if you recommend gluing instead (or another method)? If so, what glue do you recommend? As long as the piece is under an inch thick, I bake everything for 1 hour. For Premo that would be at 275F. If the piece is going to be thicker than that I bake in stages, never more than an inch thick. This will keep the [piece from cracking during the baking stage.

Watch the other baking videos in our channel (there are many) so that you are baking correctly and you should be able to strengthen up your pieces. If you are using a poor quality brand Like Craftsmart or Sculpey III though, it may not help that much, since they are brittle clays even if baked properly.

That the clay bakes the best the first time. What are your thoughts on this Cindy?

Hello ma'm, or anyone else who's reading this, I just started working with polymer clay. I am looking to make heads or busts. How, I bought Cernit polymer clay that is meant for doll making, but it is so very soft! It melts as soon as you touch it. But I am not sure what to sculpt on, because I need to be able to put it in the oven, and what to put inside of my heads as an armature. Will foil be oven safe? And is it absolutely safe for me to bake the clay in my home oven? My brother bakes his broccoli in there everyday and I'm so glad that he's finally eating veggies, haha. I don't want to put his health or taste of his broccoli in danger. If anyone has any tips for me please let me know. Thank you so much!

Thank you for the video. You are very talented and nice. However, it took a long time and a lot of "apologizing" for the PC companies...and I still didn't get an answer on baking times. Is it 1 hour regardless of the thickness, 1 hour per 1/4 inch. etc? I also realize that there are many variables (PC brands, composition, colors, evenness of oven temps, even the accuracy of a thermometer, chemicals imparted from hands and/or tools to the clay that affect curing/hardening times). Experience is the best teacher and sometimes that involves sitting there and watching something cook and much trial and error. Having said all that...what is a reasonable rule of thumb?. I would think thickness needs to be accounted for somewhere in your response, although though I am not a professional; I can barely spell polymer cay. Thank you for taking them time to educate us. I gave it a like and subscribed because you are very nice, talented and well intentioned, but I completed by taxes in less time and still don't know what your recommendations are (if it proprietary given, it is your profession, I understand). Hi Tanner, thank you for your kind input. I am aware that this behind the scenes chat video isn't as concise or as helpful to some people. I have several videos on my channel that will help with baking. In general I bake all my pieces from paper thin to 1/2 inch thick, for one hour at the recommended temp for the brand. It may seem like over kill for the very thin pieces, but they tend to be especially vulnerable to breakage, so since it does not hurt them to bake longer, I always do, just to be sure. The most important thing is to have an oven thermometer and to protect the piece from underneath and above, so that you don't get any scorching. As grateful as I am for the info, I thought the subject of baking was a lot more complex than getting the temp and time right. My problems have been so many and yes, trying to bake at a lower temp does actually help in many cases, due to the problem of some clays burning. This happened even with protection from the direct heat too. The biggest problems for me was avoiding distortion, were certain thinner parts just bend due to no support. So ideas around how to support your hands and arms would have been interesting too. Many say that you should use a separate oven if your cooking with it, I only found out about that later! Yet my smoke alarm went off last time and so not much fun. The stink was terrible, so Im thinking that a separate oven is probably exactly whats needed here. As for the colouring of the different clay types, I found FIMO gets really darker and then also shrinks at least 10%. Hope this helps

I prefer clay to be as hard as possible but the shade darker is unacceptable to me for translucent and white! What I'm doing from now on is baking colored pieces for an hour and white pieces for 35 minutes, premo seems strong even with the reduced time so I'm hoping this will work out because I don't know what else to do. What I discovered with the thermometer is that my oven takes about 25 mins to reach the final temperature it will maintain, and it's always 10C hotter than what it's supposed to be

thank you Cindy for the video it was great it's a great concept but I also think maybe should have been said is you should know how to protect the clay from burning by either tenting it or put it in something like cornstarch cover up or what other methods you might know my mind is drawing a blank right now I've only used the tin foil tent and the cornstarch method of burying your piece and they turned out just fine there is one or two times that I didn't use a tent or cornstarch cover up and I did get some Browning and one actually did burn so I've learned my lesson tent/cover it up either with tin foil or with cornstarch. I remember seeing your video about these techniques but I can't even remember what the videos were called so maybe you can link them down below here thanks again Cindy you and your husband are doing great work helping all of us.

thank you, I have been working on my first piece for about a week on and off of course but I am ready to bake it and 7m afraid it might burn. I bought an oven thermometer but should I tent it anyway? should I always tent just in case? im so nervous.

I would still tent your piece if you can, just to be on the safe side. I always tent my own pieces and in my experience this seems to help any darkening of the clay if your oven has any hot spots (I know that mine does, which is fairly common). I would also suggest lining the bottom of your baking pan with a few layers of thick paper as well, to act as a heat barrier on the bottom (it's sort of like tenting your piece from all sides).

Hi +Sandra Lea just so you know, I have tons of other videos on baking. Ones that go into detail on tenting, insulating your oven, baking on cornstarch, etc. etc. The best way to find specific videos in our channel is to go to our channel and press the little magnifying glass besides the tabs under the header. When you click that a search box comes up that is for my channel only. If you put the word baking in there, a list of all my baking videos will come up. Hope that helps! Thank you for your kind comments!

Thanks for this! I can't find an answer to this though: When I've baked my clay, do I leave the clay to cool in the oven after I've turned the oven off or do I take the clay right out of the hot oven after the allotted baking time and cool it on the counter?

@@kyramcbridemua7006 I've been doing a lot of claying in the 2 years since I asked the question, including selling my work, and I've tried both ways. I haven't seen any difference so I'd say both works :) Usually, if the clay piece is of a thicker sort, I leave it to cool in the oven. But not always. Thinner pieces I mostly take out right away. Hope this helps :)

Can I just say a huge thank you for sharing these very helpful, concise and in-depth explanation of how polymer clay behaves! I always trust your videos, I’m using polymer clay for the first time and when I’ve run into problems you always have solutions to explain it so I understand. I really appreciate the time and effort you take to do the experiments, share and upload them on KZbin ❤️

Can you put a “half baked” piece back in to finish? I’ve got a piece I made several years ago without knowing this. I love it, so I’d like to repair what’s broken and rebake properly
