How long can a patient be on Risperidon? I know a person who has been taking it for 10 yrs. The efficacy is not perfect, but is ok. Put on weight ( almost 35 kilos) but after disciplined eating (2 normal meals a day) lost 30 kgs and is keeping it. Can Extra pyramidal symptoms disappear with time? Despite 3 mg per day OCD still present. Any general advice? Thank you!

Thank you for this! I like your thorough and clear explanation. In your experience, how long does a patient wait before they start to see an improvement in symptoms and how long does it take for side effects to appear? Would it be contraindicated in someone if they already had a terrible metabolic syndrome?
@ShrinksInSneakers3 жыл бұрын
Improvement in symptoms should start around week 2, if by week 4 there is no improvement you need to look at the dose. Side effect should appear early in treatment look out for EPS with this medication. It is not a complete contraindication if someone already has metabolic issues but it may require more active treatment like starting metformin early in the process. Hope this helps, appreciate the comment

I'm on Risperdal. I have a compulsive disorder, ocd, and weird thoughts. I've gained a lot of weight from this drug. I don't eat lot, never have. In fact, I was 125 pounds before I took this drug and now I'm 211 pounds. Losing weight is extremely difficult, because I have to exercise twice as much as others and eat very tiny portions to lose weight. Is it because my metabolism slowed down? I eat regular portions. If it slows down my metabolism, what drug can I take as a substitute instead of Risperdal?
@ShrinksInSneakers2 жыл бұрын
As always talk to your doctor but in general I like ziprasidone or lurasidone as options if weight gain is an issue. I will also add metformin for my patients that I notice weight gain. It's best to start metformin before significant weight gain has occurred but it may still be beneficial. Hope this helps

im not at all dissing your info infact IM glad you state everything but let me tell you my experience so far on it I distaste the stuff! it made me have major mind fog and my drive for anything and all things is gone. IM having trouble even taking care of my self and I got head aches and hard time focusing on anything. its really frustrating. I used the washroom so much. its always super hard to go 2 now. and have to use #1 all the time now. I am gaining weight and losing weight at the same time for me. gaining fat but losing muscle. I hate going outside and talking on the phone now... I have a hard time talking to people too ever since being on this stuff. maybe some people really need it but its life altering.. thats only alittle over a year of taking 3mg of it every day.

I think it depends on what it's prescribed for, if we are not talking about Schizophrenia or other SMI the risks may outweigh the benefits. This is also a medication with a more significant side effect profile.
@Sebasinter95411 ай бұрын
The side effects are really debilitating I have been off it for 6 months after only using resperidone for 2 weeks in a months I went from 160 to 210 pounds. I still don’t feel full when I eat, hard to concentrate, depressed, sleep 12 to 13 hours a day, and constantly tired. Is it possible to recover from these side effects the resperidone caused?
@ShrinksInSneakers11 ай бұрын
coming off the medication and using things like metformin can help reduce weight. The sedation should resolve when the medication is stopped. Hope this helps

Could you please talk about why the conversion between Invega and Risperdal is so confusing - I would say for most people it's absolutely counterintuitive? Thanks!
@ShrinksInSneakers2 жыл бұрын
It's the same medication. Invega is the active metabolite of risperidone. I will provide a more detailed explanation as well

Is Risperidone good for depersonalization?
@ShrinksInSneakers2 жыл бұрын
This is not medical advice, it’s for educational purposes only. Always talk to your doctor prior to making any changes. It's not indicated for that disorder. Normally depersonalization is a symptom of another disorder such as PTSD or trauma. Treatment of depersonalization should start with psychotherapy and identification of other comorbid disorders. If PTSD is the problem then risperidone is not a first line option and has far too many side effect risk for the treatment of depersonalization alone. This drug is hellish for me , This gives me extreme tiredness and loss of will to do anything. Anything , I have eaten feels like 2- 4 times more. It's impossible to even watch KZbin video . That's all happens with me while I am taking this drug. However Olanzipine is fine with me. It just gives me sleep but I like that , Not extreme tiredness

I hear you, every patient is one of one and each person will respond in different ways to different medications. There is a little trial and error that goes into finding the right medication and it's different for every person. Stay positive things will come together

I’ve been on risperdal / risperidone for 22 years. I no longer desire to live. I feel numb. If I had a gun I’d shoot myself. No one can tell me what I do or do not feel unless you’ve been on it for a long time like I have. I wish we could give these pills to some of these doctors and then they would change their practice and help people. The side effects just aren’t worth it. Who’s normal these days anyway?

I got damaged by psychiatry and Risperdal quite badly in late 2006. Recently Vitamin B supplements appear to be helping a lot, wow! Anti-crazy medications follow about the same time line as the synthetic opioid craze. Probably sympathetic to earlier Mind Control research. See WGBH Boston video archive, "The Case of the Frozen Addict". Anti-Crazy medications induce Parkinson's at a clinical measure, especially with lithium cofactor.

How does Risperidone affect serotonin levels?
@ShrinksInSneakers2 жыл бұрын
It depends on what we are talking about. It does not directly block SERT or prevent reuptake of serotonin. It does act as an antagonist at several serotonin receptors meaning it will block those receptors specifically 5-HT2A and 5-HT1A and 5-HT7, the 2A receptors are involved in reducing psychotic symptoms while the HT7 receptors are thought to be involved in the antidepressant effects.

Olanzapine is better
@ShrinksInSneakers11 ай бұрын
Olanzapine has been shown to be more effective but does have a higher risk of metabolic side effects. I think of olanzapine as the second best option behind clozapine so I usually reserve it for people who failed at least one medication trial. Thanks for watching
