I'm a middle aged white man from Southern Illinois, but E. St. was my home three times in my life, from 12 to 30, 1990, 1994, and 2010. I've walked the steets, I've ran in the projects, I've broken bread with the people who still call this home..... There is only sadness left in E. Boogie, sadness, pain, and a memory of hope that is long, long gone..... She will forever be a part of who I am, yet watching this, I only feel sadness.....

I’m for sure wherever you are there are parts of your city that may look unpleasant to the eye.

@@keisharice2392 nah, East St. Louis is easily one of the most depressing places in the country. I’d give it as bad as Baltimore and Philadelphia. I grew up in Cahokia, then moved to Granite City, then to Collinsville before moving to Florida in 2010. I spent a lot of time driving through and around the East St. Louis area, this video does the best at really conveying the "Vibe" there, it's hard to explain, but it feels different there, you know you're in a scary place.

I lived in the nearby area, Cahokia and Belleville for over 20 years. My wife worked for Hudlin’s insurance and I worked at St. Mary’s hospital, then Kenneth Hall until it shut down for good. Then I worked at Touchette Regional. It is truly very sad to see a community of very good people being run down by corruption and crime.

When I was a kid, I'm 31 now, everyone I know called St. Mary's Hospital St. Murders because the staff would literally let people die in the emergency room from gun shots, stab wounds, and excruciating chest pain while waiting to get seen by doctors. My mom's first husband died in the waiting area of the emergency room at St. Mary's after being shot and dragging himself in from off the streets into the ER. And I myself, remember vividly being violently ill on so many occasions as a child and having to wait for sometimes up to eight hours in the emergency room to be seen by a doctor. St. Mary's was a horrible hospital.

I grew up here (Im 23) and it's like many hoods. It's to the point of no return financially, the corruption is off the charts and most young people don't really have a vision of life outside of the ESTL. But the crazy thing is, most of us from here feel at home, mainly because we know when and how to move around ESTL. However, the crime is not as bad as one might assume, it's actually dying down, the murders and shootings that is. And most people are too poor to steal from. Its just a typical slum. So crazy it is between St Louis and the Metro East, meaning many people commute through or past the city every single day. I also drive through omw to work and just fantasize about what it used to be and could become. Never will be the bustling city it was, but if the people come together it could be a beautiful place again. Lots of cheap land, lots of potential for jobs/companies to come in, it could be a Pontoon Beach of sorts. But there's just no real sense of community there yet. I want to change that.

Love my midwest. ESL has changed but it will always be home and I am not ashamed of it. It is a small beat down city with politcal corruption and yes there's violence there just like you larger cities with thier sections that people are afraid to venture off into. ESL is just a small city with no growth, no industries! People from ESL go to Belleville, St. Louis, Granite city, Fairview heights, and other areas for employment, so that tell you how small it is! It only has liquor stores and gas sations now owned by foreigners who get more loans and assistance from the government more so than the people born and raised there! Another way to keep the people of the city poorer.

Boy oh boy!!! This film was extremely well-filmed, really giving an up-close-and-personal view of not only the rundown projects but the sad, barron, burned out property they stand on. Imagine being a child growing up in such a godawful environment? The violence, crime, destruction and substance abuse that results from the anger, depression and sense of hopelessness that comes from being poor and dissed by society is enough to traumatize any child. When I think of children residing at the Robinson and DeShields homes playing in their yards with the abandoned Nester (?) glass factory looming over them like a sentinal of doom, it sends a chill through me. Symbolically, it's as though the projects are a cracked, dusty, empty bottle and the old, ruined factory is its cap.

Man, that was amazing! The word that keeps coming to my mind is "gothic." This whole video kinda has a really gothic feeling: the music is a fusion of hip beats with music that sounds like it's from the film "Halloween," the overcast skies and barren trees, the empty places with buildings, buildings in various states of repair or abandonment, the overwhelming sense of sadness and dread. I admit I'd never imagined that ghetto and goth could go so well together, but it actually makes a lot of sense. I think there's a of potential for really good gothic stories in an environment like this. I know this probably sounds kind of tone deaf and insensitive given what's being documented, and I apologize for that. It's the artist in me, though! I can't help help it. This was beautiful. I"m glad I came across it. I hadn't seen some of these places before when I'd explored East St. Louis.

Why are two new dumpsters behind a abandoned building? I walked Collinsville many day in my life. Al's2 3 4 shop, Unions clothing, Modern Mens clothing stores and some half decent stores were there. At least decent for the time period. I could see the direction that E. St. Louis was heading when I volunteered for river boat duty in Vietnam. It was just as dangerous at home as Hai Phong Vietnam. Time has just taken a toll on it. How many times have I heard people say, it just needs investments and it will turn around. It will never happen. Da Hole at 9:20 in seems fairly "new" compared to the other places. We have a few buildings here and there that are vacant in Fresno, CA (500,000 pop) but nothing like this. These rust belt videos of abandoned/vacant buildings and neighborhood are fascinating (but also sad).

@@michaelshields7777 No it’s not. My Grandma and Aunt lived in those orange sky rises and I lived in the Rosevelt Apartment complex as a kid and my other grandma lives in my great grandfather’s family home in ESTL still today. Most people just leave and move to the surrounding cities like Belleville, Fairview Heights, and O’fallon. You’d probably find some old people drinking, smoking, and hanging out near the front entrance at those sky rises. When I was a kid, the people around the apartment complex would host barbecues and birthday parties, and the kids would all hang out in the summer and after school. Don’t get me wrong; crime and the lack of jobs and funding is why people are leaving, but my family still owns a great deal of land in ESTL, and most people you come across are cool people for the most part.

I was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago and visited E. St Louis 2 or 3 times a year because I have family there. Yeah, ESL is kinda rough but name a city in the world that isn't. I've been all over that city... AT NIGHT and NEVER had any problems and I'm not even a street cat. It's mostly people who have some type of beef with each other or go around stuntin' that get got there.

The population isn’t as big in ESTL, so there’s a lot of abandoned and vacated space. He is there at a odd time, because there are normally people posted up at gas stations and stores. It honestly depends on where you at; he’s near vacated apartment complexes and he is also traveling on a lot of back roads. People still have barbecues and go partying like anywhere else.

I find it real interesting how people do documentaries on how bad East St. Louis, Il os/was. While sure, this gets clicks and comments; why is no-one asking how/why such a prominent city got this way? I grew up in East St. Louis and I'm Proud to say, even this day, that I'm from there! I graduated from E. St. Louis Lincoln Sr. H. S. "Class of Too Live '85". Our city was known as "City of Champions". S/O please explain to me how a city is supposed to thrive when all the Economic opportunities have been removed and never replaced? Our city has long been the dumping ground for surrounding cities and communities to drop off their bad baggage and we take the bad reputation. So, someone please petition for Economic grants, stimulus and opportunities for the residents of East St. Louis, IL before you do a disgraceful documentary about its residents, as if the is the lifestyle that they choose to live!!

What you're saying is nothing but the truth! I wonder whoever shot this video, did he ever speak to a single person while he was driving around or has he accomplished his agenda to get reactions on KZbin! As I said I'm from ESL and proud of it! what's going to happen is as usual gentrification will happen in about 10yrs! they have started demolishing the old buildings downtown, repaving the streets in the areas where vacant lots are now. it won't be long before the residents living there now will be moving ares like Belleville, Fairview Hgts, Shilol, Lebanon, to escape the so called slums!
