Metabolic byproducts build up in the brain during waking hours. When you sleep, there is a system called the glymphatic system (not lymphatic) that drains these byproducts. During REM cycle, your brain cells shrink by 60%, allowing the drainage to occur. That's why REM is a refreshing cycle of sleep. It is enabling your CNS to clear itself of waste products. Edit: I cited a paper below for those interested in details.

Fascinating. When was this discovered? It must have been in just the last decade or so. Do you know the sources of the studies? Oh, this is exciting. I love seeing ancient mysteries like this being solved in our modern day.

So basically what you’re saying is that my brain squeezes itself like a sponge when I’m sleeping to get all the nasty stuff out?
@chriswhite3692
@chriswhite3692 Жыл бұрын
@@Gilhelmi Gimme a bit. I recall reading about it about a decade ago....here is the article I just found: Title: "The Sleeping Brain: Harnessing the Power of the Glymphatic System through Lifestyle Choices" ". The Glymphatic System and Sleep The glymphatic system is constantly filtering toxins from the brain, but during wakefulness, this system remains mainly disengaged [3]. Although sleep is often associated with rest, glymphatic activity is dramatically boosted during sleep. Photoimaging of in vivo mice demonstrated a 90% reduction in glymphatic clearance during wakefulness, and twice the amount of protein clearance from the brain intima during sleep [1]. Sleep-induced enhancement of glymphatic function appears to arise from the expansion of the ISF space [13]. In a human in vivo study, blood oxygen level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging (Bold fMRI) was used in combination with electroencephalograph and CSF measurements in order to detect in which sleep state most brain activity occurred. They found that during wakefulness, CSF flow had a small-amplitude rhythm, peaking at around 0.25 HZ, whereas during sleep, large oscillations occurred every 20 s, peaking at around 0.05 HZ, resulting in a significantly greater inflow of CSF than during the day [6]. As well as cleansing the brain, the replenishing role of the glymphatic system was observed. Glymphatic-induced reoxygenation of the brain occurs during large pulsations of CSF. The pulsating fashion in which these sleep oscillations occur suggests that the majority of glymphatic activity occurs during N3 sleep. During this stage of sleep, slow oscillatory brain waves were shown to increase the amount of CSF within the interstitial cavities, leading to an 80-90% increase in glymphatic clearance relative to the waking state, and demonstrate the importance of slow-wave"

@@L1MBO12 I wouldn't say squeeze? Maybe individual brain cells (I'm not using 'neurons' for a reason) might pull their cytoskeletal/microtubule structures together to compress so that this stuff drains. Not sure how it actually drains. See below for research paper on it.

I have an insurance that pays for everything except my sleep medicine. I have to pay $288 a month for a medication that helps me function because “insomnia isn’t an issue.” Sleep deprivation can fuck you up and should be considered a real medical issues. Edit: this medication is the only thing that can make me fall asleep. I have tried everything else, including ambien, but nothing works besides this medication. It’s Dayvigo in case any other sleep deprived people are struggling and have insurances that cover it. A discount card can be used to take a good amount off since most insurances price it at $35.

I've stayed awake for 7 1/2 days. working out and taking walks helped the most. I usually stay up pretty late so I was used to the effects. I normally hallucinate after 20-28 hours, it's so weird. I had my headset hanging from the wood 2x4's on my loft bed. I kept noticing it and it seemed like it was staring at me. I was on adderall at the time and stopped taking it after 3 days because it made me weirdly tired and awake at the same time which I didn't like. at 5 days, I couldn't remember anything I did a few hours before. at the 7 day mark, I fell asleep by getting up from my chair after gaming, then just collapsed and slept for 18 hours. I had insomnia for a week after, and any time I stay up or use my adderall meds, I get insomnia 80% of the time. I'll fall asleep but it takes 2-4 hours. This video is serious, don't try this. You'll hate yourself the next time you try to sleep because of your mind being messed up from it. It's not based on who much, most people will get the insomnia mentioned. It sucks so bad. If you do, go workout or do somehting that makes you super tired before sleeping, it helps a lot.

I once went an entire week, seven days and nights, without sleep. It was not intentional or drug related.

@@shonenjumpmagneto At the time, I was very, very ill. I was in super bad shape with a lung infection that was being treated as asthma by a bad doctor. Every time I laid down, the instant I began to relax, I would start coughing. I never got to sleep. Lie down, being to relax and bang, the coughing started. I was septic by the time I told the doc to fuck off and another doc was assigned to me. I came very close to death according to the doctor that took over. I was in hospital for a couple of weeks. Codeine is a hell of a cough suppressant. It was a dry cough and the first doc wouldn't stop the cough just in case I might have some thing come up in the coughing. So, in truth that week was a blur. after the third day I was not rocking in reality. Also, the bad doctor had filled me full of large amounts of prednisone and I was mentally affected by that stuff. Once I started to recover all I wanted to do was sleep. I was quite beat up by the experience.

For the amount of days he spent without sleep, "entire" shouldn't be used to describe 14 hours of sleep, cos thats a very small fraction of the sleep he would've had for 11 days

By the way, DON'T DO THIS. People have lost their lives from doing this for much less amount of time.

Driving like that. Just the mundane but still stressful act of driving like that and all the constant thinking and actions can speed it up. Remeber, driving tired is actually considered worse then driving drunk!
