We were cancelled by our property insurance in OC last April due to fire concerns. Ok, and we sold our house of 37 years last March. Our buyer now faces this property insurance nightmare in SoCal. This is the new reality. We live in a state across the country (not Florida or the South) with decent property and auto insurance. CA is becoming unaffordable . The conditions would have been made less severe if common sense forest manager was put into place along with fire brake lines. There is a plant with the design designation as, ‘grease wood’ that burns like paper because it has a high creosote content. Parts of largely masonry structures and their flammable contents adjacent to sufficiently large bush fire loads will combust. Airborne burning debris is less likely to ignite roofs clad with clay tiles or profiled steel sheeting etc. Building professionals need to rewrite codes and standards.

Home owners insurance canceled and the new company charged us triple of what we were paying. Fled CA in 2022...TG! My heart goes out to my friends and family still there. The cause is the same as it's always been. No rain for 8 months after a shitload of rain early in the year, so everything grows and then dies and is dry as fuck. Then a fire starts and 80mph winds carry it everywhere. There's no practical way to fight that before it destroys large areas and the only real way to prevent it from happening is simply not living there and letting it burn every year, or build everything with non-flammable materials which is very expensive and not practical. Clearing brush could help but it's not gonna change anything unless you remove pretty much all the plant life in a large area.

One thing that's not normally discussed is that most cities don't own their own water company, most of the water companies are privatized....and unfortunately have made it difficult to create policy/ordinance to ensure these water companies throughout not only States but Nationally are responsible for updating , upgrading and modernizing water infrastructures, that will allow appropriate water pressures. Fire Departments consistently measure the pressures in the water hydrants...seeking assistance from water companies to explore increasing pressures...and again it falls on the private business, some do work on pressures and upgrades.... most residents pay a water bill. We tend to dismiss the complexity of the system and players.... unfortunately, as many things government has limitations in executing demands on private business...though they try, however very little is discussed as it tends to be local government. It's just a matter of looking at various components to prevent or minimize fire risks. It's unfortunate that we are required to purchase home insurance when we get a mortgage and pay into it for years, do not use it and then as nothing it's canceled...while they are not required to return any type of refund, depending on claims or use... I find it rather deliberate, as banks require you to get this.... and I never ever comment on these posts because it's a very complex issue, including that no matter how much you prepare, various factors can change within minutes including weather conditions. This moment of sadness and devastation...and my hope is to really put in a plan to support a community in need, and don't just talk but create actionable interventions...we waste time with drama and miss the opportunity, right now we just can't afford that... and I hope with all my heart it was a deliberate action knowingly that these winds were in progress, man-made and natural causes...very different, but there are bad characters ready to create discord and division. California has definitely a changing weather pattern, but so do many other states. Don't intend to argue... just wanted to share the complexity of so many players.
