Take that spring hone and throw it in the trash along with the ball hone. Not worth a F. They only make a messed up hole a bigger messed up hole. You need a guided hone such as a sunnen to correct any taper or out of roundness. There’s even a decent Lisle guided hone available for cheap. Those spring hones are a great way to ruin a bore.

@@Transient901 I mean I hate to rip on a fella working with what he’s got but seems the internet thinks these hones are the proper tool. They’re only somewhat acceptable to deglaze a bore that’s in tolerance, as im sure you know... just wish people would quit posting spring/ball hone videos as “how to” videos as the procedure is often totally incorrect... no hate on OP.

@@FlatBroke612 Huge difference between honing and deglazing. As I said, this subject is intense, deep and ripe with theory that literally takes years of boring and honing to actually and accurately resize cylinders to even begin to understand.

ive got an even better way of doing it. run a hose with running water while your doing it and use a squirt of dish soap and the stones never clog. the stones never seem to wear that way either. water and soap clean the bore as you hone it and can literally be wiped dry and some atf on a rag to coat the cylinder to prevent flash rust and your good to go. i find oils turn into grease with metal shavings and clog stones. believe it or not you can also dry hone a cylinder ive done it and it seems to work faster but the stones wear out faster but it actually leaves a better finish.

I reckon so too. Another important point many don't mention is the cross-hatch angle to achieve, so one may to get the right drill speed combined with the speed of shoving it in and out.

Tells you to spray it all over so it doesn't pool, but does the whole job with the cylinder almost horizontal. If there was only a way to have the cylinder vertical to both allow a more uniform distribution of lubricant/cleaner and to allow the residue to drain out.

@fireintheholeagain 7 ай бұрын
Generally, a top ring gap of at least 0.004-inch per 1 inch of cylinder bore is sufficient on a normally aspirated street engine. If you do the math on a typical small-block that has been bored 0.030 inch over, (0.004 x 4.030) you'll find that a top ring gap of 0.016 inch is what to use.

@fireintheholeagain
@fireintheholeagain 7 ай бұрын
@@TubeInspire Depending on how much boost your running. On big boosted applications I would say .006 to .009 thousandths extra Gap to be on the safe side. If your going to start naturally aspirated. I would run 5 to 6 thousandths extra Gap if you're unsure about boosting an engine in future. Because if you Gap it too much and decide not to put forced induction on it then it's going to have less mileage before the rings wear and you'll eventually have blow by in certain cases. Nitrous oxide it's best to have cast rings but that's for more extreme measures of a race engine but others do run chrome moly rings for race cars as well.

Drill a bigger diameter holes for rod bearings etc. and make an oil change with the thikest oil possible. Like 30w80 or something. All my customers get a warranty for 5 minutes.😄👍

So, just watching the video, it’s clear that the tool is not being held centered to the bore. The top stone is hanging out of the top while the bottoms stones are 1/2” inside the bore. That means you are aiming up hill. Best bet, if you are looking to break a glaze with one of these things, is to orient the bore vertically, and get the thing centered. Adjust the spring for light contact, and have your drive motor going SLOW.
