I have an older cousin who was an only child...her dad owned about 40 acres in the Miami neighborhood called the Coconut Grove, her father sold them in 1932 because he needed money because of the depression...sold them for $20,000 - but today they are worth $47 million

I once threw away about $18k worth of hydrocodone when working at a pharmaceutical company. Luckily, it was found before it went into the dumpster. They accused me of trying to sneak it out of the building but it was a legit mistake.

One of my most expensive mistake was throwing away a gold bullion that my friend stole from his parents and gave to me in elementary school. We were in class watching a movie eating lunch and I had placed it on my tray and covered it with a napkin. When I threw my tray. I had forgotten about it on accident

When I went to university I needed money really bad so I sold a bunch of my old baseball cards from the '70s and '80s to a card dealer who turned out to be a shyster. For $40 I sold him probably over a thousand dollars of cards. Even for the time, they were worth around $600. I'll never forget the TWO Rickie Henderson rookie cards alone in that deal.

Yeah in South Africa we had a similar problem, shiny new trains, too tall for the railway tunnels and bridges. The problem is you can't suddenly raise the heights of bridges and tunnels.
@vaahtobileet
@vaahtobileet 2 жыл бұрын
The first "mistake" seems like a thing they would've had to face at some point anyway: standardizing the railways. Buying the trains wasn't a mistake, unless they could've bought some type of train that can go on tracks of two different widths. I'm sure most countries have had a standardized track gauge for a long time.

10:40 a few years ago while dealing with big money real estate transactions(I'm a real estate broker), I was told on a phone call to "rescind the offer" but I had heard "resend the offer." Fortunately it left me perplexed enough that I double checked and didn't make a massively costly mistake.

I did the exact same thing with bitcoins. I used to play this Diablo 2 game back when bitcoin first started up. We used to farm them and use them to trade for items in the game. To me it was just a useless game currency. I accumulated about 120 and then quit playing the game. Eventually I upgraded my computer and threw the one with the bitcoins away. It wasn’t until years later when I realized bitcoins were actually worth something. Still makes me sick to think about. But yeah, back then there was no wallet. They were stored as code on your hard drive and that’s it..

Loss is relevant though. I don't "feel better" about any of my losses after seeing this because I haven't been in a position to lose that kind of money. Yeah it makes me go "ouch..that would suck" but beyond that it means nothing to me. The only ones I may slightly care about are the ones like the bitcoin dude and the lost lottery tickets. Because those people COULD have been me.

once read the yen to usd exchange wrong at the bank. it was a filling in the paper and it read: USD/Yen amount _____. and i thought it was asking how much yen i wanted, so i was hoping to just get 10k yen~ $90, so i wrote 10.000, and when i gave them my card and the paper, the manager had to come up to me to ask if i meant yen not usd. they ended up taking back all their forms as the writing was slightly vague and confusing. thanks to the manager, or else id get handed over a million yen.

So the Apple guy sold 10% of the company for $800, that was worth 35 billion in 2013(I assume even more today). Even if he really needed the money, he could've sold 9.9% of Apple stock for $792 dollars which would've been worth 35 million in 2013. I mean, obviously a billion is way more than a million. But you're living a pretty damn comfortable life with a net worth of 35 million. Its kinda like...a few years ago, the powerball lottery or whatever got up to like $300 million or something like that and all of my co-workers were going to chip in and buy a bunch of tickets and the share would be doled out proportionally to what you put in. I knew we weren't going to win, but the FOMO of "what if I don't do it, and they win? Could you imagine how depressing it would be seeing all of your former co-workers taking their private jets from their mansion to their yacht while I'm still waking up to my alarm to go work all day?" It was like "its worth $2 to me to not have that fear."

Dave, bitcoins do not exist on your hard drive. They exist in the bitcoin network, specifically in the ledger of all transactions. What he has on his hard drive was a bitcoin address to the $127 million worth of bitcoin. Anyone who knows that address and the password can access those bitcoin. I'm assuming he still knows the password, so all he needs is the address.
