I've been watching Bondi Rescue for about 15 years, and I always used to think that people were exaggerating the effects of the green whistle due to having a camera pointing at them, as people often do... ...until I had to administer it to somebody for the first time in a role that I have now. man i feel for the man with all the surgery, my dad has had multiple surgeries throughout my whole life the stomach and back surgeries hurt him the most, it’s one of the more painful surgeries you could have. your body constantly moving , just is such a long hard recovery process, i wish him the best and hope he heals up soon with no complications.

I've had methyoxyflurane once in an ambulance with a broken arm. That stuff is weird. I would say rather than making your injury not hurt, it makes you not give a toss about it because you're so interested in everything around you and the random thoughts that pop into your head. You also won't remember much of the period you were on it afterwards. According to the paramedics who were treating me, I was warning them over and over to watch out for the bread in the road. I have no recollection of why I thought there might be dangerous bread in the road XD

@@samwilson188 I was surprised to learn it is not an opoid. It is actually a type anesthetic. None of my US doctors had ever heard of the whistle but were fascinated by my story.

In the UK people under 18, people who have kidney or liver diseases, people on antibiotics, unconscious or not breathing well patients or patients who have had penthrox within the last 7 days CANNOT have penthrox (the green whistle, methoxyflurane) It is expensive, and not too applicable to all patients. Entonox would be a much better alternative to pain management. However, I cannot say that penthrox should not be used as obviously it is a great tool, and my organisation has not got all methods of pain management available. There are many types of medication for all sorts of patients. An ambulance can only carry so much.

I broke my arm while in Queensland. The ambulance guy, who was working alone, whips out a Green Whistle. I was mystified, never having seen one before. My wife, however, a devoted Bondi Beach viewer, startled the Paramedic and I when she started to scream, "I know what that is!" Like this video, after inhaling the Green Whistle, which is not used in the US, I was given mainline morphine. I was absolutely flying. I was then taken to this small hospital in the town of Mossman, which I was the only patient in the ER and again received world-class attention for my injury. They billed me because I was American once I went back to California but I paid the invoice with a smile. To us it was just more evidence of why we love vacationing in FNQ every year.

I’ve dislocated nearly every joint in my body, most of which have been my shoulders. I’m so used to it & it happens so often that when I hit my teen years, I stopped going to the hospital & just fix it myself. (same goes for my kids) I’m a retired M.D. with a medical condition…I do NOT recommend fixing a dislocation without aaccess to a Dr & radiology due to the risk of causing permanent damage!

They really should. If you’re that hurt, Ambos in Aust wont even try to move you without one. They’re good stuff. I was riding scooters with a friend while in the US and she fell and broke her ankle in 3 places… Ambo trip, Xrays plus a 6hr wait in the hospital all without pain meds. It was disgusting.

Yes, the green whistle is a single dose medication. We see the ambulance paramedic administer a 2nd dose at 00:10:18 here. Fentanyl is used by military paramedics in lollipop form, IIRC.

Reminded of dental patients coming off nitrous oxide. Green Whistle = Methoxyflurane is no longer used as it produces some respiratory and cardiovascular system depression. The metabolism of methoxyflurane results in fluoride ion release, which may cause renal damage.

Nah it's not an opiate based one. My husband is allergic to codeine too but he's had the panthrax whistle heaps of times. It's short acting which is why they usually use it to transport people to hospital.

It happened to me starting at 18 months (I obviously don't remember then) bc my egg donor (there's many reasons I call her such she was violently abusive to me) by the time I was 8, I had over 18 dislocations, yet the doctors just assumed it was the abuse and not another underlying issue. As a young adult, I finally got diagnosed with EDS, I'm now 34, and I've had more dislocations than I can remember. It's gotten so sometimes I can actually reset it myself. I think all those hospital visits are what motivated me to be first a corpsman (medic in the Navy) and later a paramedic. However, I've also worked in the ER... and was a lifeguard from ages 15-18... but at a pool, not a beach, lol. Beach lifeguards are elite for sure. We don't have the green whistle in America, I wish we would, though!
