I find that in terms of characters, the worst part is not just that they are stupid, but they're also really annoying or they're shitty people and that doesn't help me develop a connection to the point where I can feel for them when bad things happen to them. I think that something like Jacob's Ladder works so well because Jacob is such a sweet character, so you're really invested in him.

I love Jacob's Ladder! I really wish we got more of these deeply personal types of horror stories. Besides Jacob's Ladder, the Silent Hill games, and other pieces of media I can't think of off the top of my head, there seems to be a real lack of deep and well written characters in the genre. Lots of characters are treated only as vehicles to move the plot forward, and few actually serve as the heart of the story. The horror of the story hits harder when you actually give a damn about the characters!

Navajo culture, especially the legends scare me more than most horror. Skinwalkers and wendigos are not properly researched half of the time by people that talk about them so I invested in watching actual indeagous people speak about them and it really was different from what most people say. And Japanese urban legends scare me too. I learned about them as a little kid and I know basically all of them at this point due to my desperation for good scares because everything sucks from the U.S.

Word. Honestly though what really bugs me is how much people get wrong about both of those myths. They get sort of homogenized into almost the same monster in a lot of stories that somehow can't tell the difference between Native Americans living in New England (where the wendigo originates) and those living over 2000 miles away in the southwest (where the skinwalker originates). In reality they are so totally different and unique but get completely bastardized by people who know nothing about the myths. And don't even get me started on those bird headed abominations we see in most video games.

this is my horror hot-take, but i think jumpscares are a great tool that are just sadly often misused for cheap shock. i see in indie internet horror a lot that people tend to lean entirely into unnerving aesthetics and atmosphere, and that’s a good thing, mostly! but sometimes i just stop getting scared by them because they pull all their punches, and i feel safe watching them because they stop doing jumpscares because it’s perceived as more sophisticated in wake of the jumpscares identity in the past ten years and its association with cheap scares. it’s a tool to keep the audience engaged and on their toes fer crying out loud
@raptorboss66889 ай бұрын
I can see what you’re getting at, the idea that atmospheric eeriness is just not enough to keep someone captivated and becomes kinda mundane, is something I agree with. Where we differ is I think jumpscares are kinda because they completely hijack a normal reaction of our survival instincts. What I think is better is the idea of horror, (that being which brought terror finally coming to fruition) can be much more effective with a very blunt approach that forces you to sit with the horror you’re facing rather than an instant one and done deal.

I would personally love to see more semi-jumpscares in movies. I define those as a moment when something unexpected and usually visually disturbing appears suddenly on camera or even in the background, but the movie doesn’t hype it up with lame jumpscare sound effects, instead allowing the viewer to react in a more organic way. It’s less cheap and fabricated, and often far more unsettling because of the silence or minimized audio.

My favourite horror fiction is the Ghost Stories of an Antiquary by M.R. James, they're a great example of quiet, subtle horror that builds an uncomfortable mood. While many of the stories follow a repetitive formula (the protagonist, usually a historian or antique dealer, tampers with some kind of antique or ancient artefact, unwittingly summoning a ghost that quietly stalks him for a while before eventually killing him), not all of them do, and the ones that do often have something unique going on to make them stand out from each other.

Deficient perspectives is one of the major issues I have with horror. I would LOVE to see a horror movie from the perspective of a character with untreated schizophrenia who either learns some of the stuff they see/hear aren’t just hallucinations. Or using the pespective of someone being a minority, queer or disabled whose life experience makes them know of or understand the horror better. For example, I like that in Get Out, there is body/psychological horror but that racism is part of the horror as well.

As much as I love the method, I've often wondered if Save The Cat hasn't spoilt a lot of horror and its' potential. Save The Cat categorizes most horror as "Monster In The House" and sums it up as containing 3 elements: "A: A monster B: A sin C: A House", and it seems to encourage a template of simplicity. As a result, most horror is so predictable, you can often guess who will live, who will die, and what the real issue is.

In the game Omori, there is a jumpscare at the beginning of the game when you wake up in the middle of the night and hear knocking at the door. You can open the door if you want to and it only shows a specific creepy image behind a cracked door. There is no sound and it's only there for a second. It is the first scare of the game which before that point was very light-hearted. What makes that scare so good is you dont understand what you actually saw until towards the end of the game and that jumpscare is completly missable.

The fact that most influences my boredom while consuming recent horror midia is around what exactly is the thing, monster or subject Im getting afraid of. The times that I felt the most genuine horror and true terror in my life was while reading H. P. Lovecraft, where the object of fear are unknown beings that the human mind simply cant comprehend. I remember growing up and having nightmares after reading it multiple times and it gives me chills until this day. The fear of the incomprehensible, unnameable things or aspects is what gets me the most interested in a horror midia. I feel like the more vague and embracing a subject is the more the human mind tends to fear it, because we struggle to comprehend it and we are made to do so. We evolved with the sense to fear the unknown and we will always have a bad feeling towards things we cant wrap our minds around. The most "recent" piece of midia I can think about that gives me the same type of vibes and uncanny horror are the mangas (and now in anime too) of Junji Ito, the way how every horror element descripted have a super vague background with minimal explanation (Eg. a curse, spirit, etc.) and how the actual visual elements he draws (super super memorable pieces btw, I love black and white horror drawings) are just the consequences of said elements. In sum I think the excess information about a horror subject is what throws me off. Absolute no info is also bad, but the right amout of it, letting things as vague as possible gives so much more room to our minds to fill and THATS where it gets us: our brains are really good into making the worse and most terrible scenarios possible and it will always vary from person to person. Honestly, this problem isn't only in horror it's in every genre! With the market the way it is, people are forced to produce faster, produce more more more to as WIDE an audience as possible. Trying to get a wide general audience as possible for literally *everything* is going to kill the beauty of these genres. If a person doesn't like a musical you shouldn't market a musical towards them (looking at you Hollywood). Those audiences are not going to care about the result. Same with horror. We should all go back to creating for niche subgroups of little freaks (affectionate).

I didn't like how it was just monsters in the real works just... existing (even if I was afraid watching those films). Recently, however, I watched Scream 2022 and I loved it. There wasn't any monster, or demons that needed to be banished, it was people hurting other people. Every time a character was alone, I had this sense of dread that they will get hurt, and I was scared for them. I still avoid most horror, as I don't like to be scared most of the time, but I know I don't enjoy films or games with "spooky scary alien monster" anymore.

One of the horror cliches I hate the most is when the detestable atrocious antagonist gets away with committing atrocities, kills the last survivor or makes it into a hostage and "wins". I like creature features with interesting monster designs, but I do NOT want them to be absent most of the film and just revealed at the last second, I want to see the monsters in full background, and yes I get it that the films try to build suspense. Another one of the WORST horror cliches is NOT just limited to "horror", is that OVERUSED and OVERDONE personal eye for an eye cliche (v***eance), eye for an eye makes the world blind. I had ENOUGH of those annoying supernatural killers CONSTANTLY coming back from the dead, while the innocent don't come back from the dead, NOT to get eye fro an eye, but to protect and guide the living innocent. I HATE extreme senseless violence towards the innocent, especially minors. The atrocious humans are deserving of violent torture, NOT the innocent! I just get DISGUSTED at overuse of gore and senseless violence. Got any other horror cliches you hate? Let me know!

I think a big problem is nostalgia too. Because it breeds a desire for something or the scene in general to pay homage to or just be a rehash of established IPs. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy a good throwback, or a solid sequel (I legit love the Saw series), but the idea that horror sucks these days because the mainstream is a certain way is kinda misguided. Not saying that you’re in that bubble, but I see it a lot. 2 of my favorite movies lately are The Sadness & Gonjiam Haunted Asylum. Like, yes, the violence was extreme in the former but the sense of dread was phenomenal. Same with the latter. The characters were solid in that too. Yeah, good characters are important. If you do not care about the characters you generally aren’t immersed in the film. I mean, you can care about them as people or care about them as funny pawns you want to see struggle. A lot of popular horror movies go for the second type of immersion, where the viewer doesnt connect with the characters but looks down on them. The other type is what I don’t see a lot- granted, I’m not really in the horror cinema community. But in my experience relating to the setting and characters helps connect to the actual horror more. Things like the conjuring having intelligent ghost hunters and homeowners that want to leave but are too poor to afford abandoning the house really make a difference. (Hope I got the movie right) If the scary thing beats a competent character its more intimidating. If it beats a stupid character the audience automatically dissociates because “I’m not that stupid, that wouldnt happen to me”.

I will admit that a lot of movies are predictable, however i did find that there are some movies on the smaller side that downright have moments that could get you. When i think of movies that get me, I think of the movie Friend Request. Of course it has predictability, but it definitely got me in a moment where one would look at it and go "oh this is gonna happen" but something close to it on a different spectrum, and it got me pretty good lol. I hope horror movies can improve on the predictability in the future, but I doubt it will. I think this is why I really like psychological horror than body horror with the cheesy stings because it's predictable. Psychological horror can go a complete different angle and it really screws with me if done really well. The movie Hush is a decent movie, and of course it has it's moments and it doesn't really have jumpscares, but i think it was well done, even if my friends dont think so. There's 2 movies i really like that go the psychological way and really play with your mind while watching them: The Perfection and then the movie Silent House from 2011. They're both really good with messing with your mind, but be warned if you go to watch them, they involve themes of S/A, not any showing of it, just implied and whatnot

Violence is extremely good tool. It just need to be used properly. Just finished Evil Within - old game, but i lay my hands on it only recently. It's a bad game, poorly designed, not very scary... But violence in there was so frightening in the beginning. Just mercilessly pushing you deeper and deeper in litteral flesh pits. If monster arrives at the scene it not there to pose, to build tension, it will SCREAM and rush and will rip you in half without mercy and any suspense... It was kinda drink of fresh air to my surprise, especially in contrast with main story circling around nobleman and family secrets. Reminds me of Clive Barker approach a bit, where you can get exquisite and poetic depiction of anal mutilation or something. And must say it worked at least half of the game wich is a lot of time, much more than you need to construct a movie. All you need to do to make violence scary is to make it so quick and vicious, viewers should be uncomfortable with it on the screen and want it to stop as badly as characters do. I hope my mumbling make any sense 😂

I wouldn't say this is a horror thing so much its just western media horror. I say this bc asian horror especially j and k horror doesn't have these problems.

Oh god, I respect your videos and your ideas. but I don't understand why you brought up Noroi, Barbarian, and Lake Mungo. They don't really do much to flip the genre in an interesting way. The Wailing is so much better then any of those and idk, it seems weird that those other three get way more respect when they really are not that good or unique...

This is an extremely unpopular opinion, but I can't stand the horror manga artist Junji Ito. His art? Great. His stories and characters? Dog water. He has a few that work, but too many ruin the stories with their bad execution or one-dimensional characters.

Horror is a countercultural genre showing others how the world isn't as nice as the cherry-frosted surface, a mainstream conventions-defying genre made for ballsy, daring, gothic, violent writing and designed to play on the fear of the public as a whole. Hollywood corporations/producers and especially the MPAA are a monolith designed to keep the flow of the story of each movie predictably laid out for the viewer, designed to keep the movie riddled with corny tropes, designed to make sure there's loads of PC material (and ever increasing), and designed to make certain that the movie remains a rehash of everything the audience liked about other movies, i.e. not anything that goes an imaginative, inspired, unpredictable, and different route that audiences didn't expect, all so the movie industry corporate execs/movie producers get loads and loads of greedy cash. And Hollywood is making movies solely for 16 y/o's and China now. It should be no surprise that horror movies present day, are violent trash, not imaginative, not unique, predictable and certainly not scary. Anything less would upset the heck out of China.

Thats why I love movies like Eraserhead or House that Jack built, because we got something that we are not used to. Yes, maybe in House that Jack built theres alot, maybe too much of gore that could in some parts wouldnt be needed, but it kinds of needs to be in the movie to kind of accompany the whole plot so we can built the distaste in us for the main character, Jack. And about Eraserhead, well, I just dont know how to describe it. Its just so symbolic, so weird in its own way. And im pretty sure that youve heard of these, but atleast you know my opinion now, so I guess thats it.
