@@hoagieland3716 Melee Roy is not as close to be considered mid tier in Melee! So many high frames recovery, junky hit boxes, poor combo set up, one of the most horrible recovery and overall laggy attacks. There was absolutely no safe way to commit an attack without getting punished.

vide0gameCaster I mean that’s just not true. D tilt is probably his main combo starter and combos into just about anything. His grab range is second to Marth and he has the same follow-ups (just not the same combo finishers). His aerials are weak, but send at decent angles in comparison to Marth and can actually confirm into kills. His ground speed is decent and his dash dance is great, so movement isn’t an issue. Most of his aerials have more startup and more landing lag than Marth, yes but due to Roy’s faster fall speed, he has a better SHFFL. That and there are a few things that set apart Roy that help him more in matchups like him being able to grab a crouching puff off of a jump cancelled grab unlike Marth or his counter against Falco up b outright killing at zero because it scales percent and knockback with the strength of the move it counters unlike Marth’s which only does a flat 7% and has a set knockback growth unaffected by the move countered. Now you are correct that his recovery is bad due to his fast fall speed and that is the main reason he’s not viable (no it’s not crouch cancelling, sheik suffers the same problem but is considered top 5). The other being his inherently worse character design which doesn’t allow him to compete at range as well as Marth. If you want me to discuss matchup spreads vs top tiers, his worst by far are sheik because chaingrabs are free and also fair just kills and peach because d smash, turnips, and edgeguarding. His best top tier matchups are probably puff because single hit up b kills puff at zero meaning every time puff uses rest, it’s a stock trade and he has the same grab follow ups on puff as Marth does with up throw at higher percents killing roughly 25% earlier than Marth, and Falco because Roy has the speed to close the gaps and Falco can’t really edgeguard like Fox can and Falco gets combo-ed to death pretty easily with up throw chain grab mixing in d tilt and finishing with an f smash and then just counter up b (or f tilt side b). As for stages, Roy is abysmal on dreamland as he cannot reach the platforms without jumping and the blast zones being larger don’t help him in the slightest. His best stages are yoshis due to its small size, dreamland because of the platforms lowering to allow Roy to cover them with the sweet spots of his moves, and FD for the same reasons Marth is good on FD. And just to let you know, no he is not viable in tournament but honestly, no one outside the top 8 is viable at a high level, including all of the mid tier and low tier characters, so don’t think that me saying he’s mid tier (I’d probably put him right below young link) doesn’t mean I think he’s viable outside of an odd and niche counter-pick character against puff on stadium or yoshis due to the cheese, so don’t take any of this the wrong way. Sorry for the rant but I just feel this character is better than people think and his only real top player representation is M2K dicking around against random lower skill players which doesn’t show anything.

God Roy got such a glowup from his previous appearances. He was terrible and actually broken in melee. While he was no slouch in Sm4sh, he still lagged behind most fighters in most aspects. Now he is amongst the best and kills early.
