Love this style of review. I just purchased some products from DefenAge, they have a proprietary ingredient that is supposed to activate the master skin stem cell to create collagen without needing a wound to start the reaction. I would LOVE to see your take on their technology since it’s a very different product line from its market competitors. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us.

Love your informative honest reviews and vidoes. Love the science perspective and knowledge you have too. Plz make a video about the cell turnover you mentioned or that too much active ingredients can be harmful or aging. A bit scary coz i use retin A, glycolic acid, peptides and active serums almost every day.
@KatarinaLuise
@KatarinaLuise 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the suggestion! I will try to make a more informative video on this topic. As a general rule of thumb, AHA (such as the glycolic acid) and retinoids (such as the retin A) work by breaking down and sloughing off the weak, older, damaged, and dull cells. This reveals healthier and younger cells underneath. If you allow your skin to rest in between applications (so using them every 2nd or 3rd day) then your healthy cells will have time to recover and not become damaged. If the products are applied too often (say, every day) then even the healthy cells won't manage to recover between applications so then they will be stripped prematurely which can ultimately result in pre mature ageing of the skin if done over many years. The impact of using these products is still just a small piece of a larger puzzle of lifestyle choices and genes which affect skin ageing though, so even if you have been using them very frequently, using them less often will minimise any impact, and you can safely continue to use them without concern. I hope this is useful!

Oh my gosh I am low key laughing 😂 When I picked up this one in my haul I thought it was some no-name whatever kind of cream, I'd never heard of it before, and now here we are, I am learning that I have been living under all kinds of rocks 😂 I had *no* idea how expensive this is! Ahh I see now it has shea butter, that can sometimes break me out... we'll see. Agree with the alcohol, ugh. Really impressed with the transparency, but I totally understand that not everything can be revealed. That's really interesting with the research, though, wonder why they didn't do a longer trial. Omg yesss, the cell turnover thing has scared me too! I had no idea about the limited amount, that is SO SCARY!!!!!!! Thank you for calming me a little and putting things into perspective haha, I felt my heart rate go up before you even finished the sentence (I am fully aware I have a dramatic streak lol). I have used some EGF serums (that I got as a gift), and they have made my skin look really nice, but.... eeeeeeehhhh I have worried they could potentially increase the speed at which potentially cancerous cells in the skin grow as well. I have only found somewhat vague or not totally conclusive research on this, but it worried me enough not to repurchase, even though my skin did look nice. Really appreciate that you mention these powerful products can have drawbacks as well. When you just picked it up and was like "here is a cream" and put it aside I was like NO! RUVI! IT'S SACRED! The 28 day testing is what is required for the products and it meets all of the requirements, and so of course it is fine! It was also really thorough, transparent, and well documented so I absolutely have to commend them for that, it's much appreciated! I didn't mean to scare anyone with the cell turnover information, it really is a small piece in a larger puzzle and other lifestyle and genetics will play a much larger role, just something I think is worth thinking about with these really advanced products, especially when you are so young when you start with such intense skincare! I'm wearing the pat McGrath lip gloss in flesh astral, it's super opaque and pretty! My new favourite for sure :) Thanks so much x

I’m very much enjoying your deep dives into skincare from a research-based, scientific perspective. I dig a bit, but am perplexed by the fact that squalane can signify a broad range of sources from shark liver to olive oil. Surely that creates not just an untenable range of efficacy and an equally broad range of chemical compounds all underneath the umbrella of squalane? Admittedly, this is from a more humanities-minded mindset.
@KatarinaLuise
@KatarinaLuise 5 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree and I think that's a great point. A lot of products can be either derived from animal products or vegan products and it isn't always so transparent. Like the alcohol, for example, in one case it came from sheeps wool and in the other case it never specified, so the user doesn't know. Although in these products they are nit vegan anyway. I also think it's important to inform the consumer to make their own decision too!

Love that you mentioned the cell turnover issue. Yes! Do you think this is also an issue with using chemical exfoliating over the long term? I know you mentioned this but how do you approach this? Would using a retinol combat this since it thickens the skin? Love what you share. New here 💖
@KatarinaLuise
@KatarinaLuise 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for the comment and questions! In theory, yes chemical exfoliants and anything which encourages cell turnover could also have the same effect. There are very few long term skincare studies and retinol is the best studied. The long term results of using retinol daily has different effects on different peoples skin, but it has shown premature ageing if used daily after about 5 years. The results are still inconclusive, and of course no one is advised to use it daily. So far as I know, there are no studies on long term correct usage of retinol which show any ageing to the skin, so my approach is just to use them appropriately (no more than every second day) and only as needed, so for me I see no benefit in using them every second day over using them every third day so I just scale it back to every 3rd day. Everyone's skin is different though :)

Chemical exfoliant! Does tretinoin cream age you if you use it long term? Is it better not to use it! Your topic is very interesting! ❤️ love you know if you like the cream so perfect
@KatarinaLuise
@KatarinaLuise 5 жыл бұрын
yes all retinoids such as tretinoin cream work by encouraging cell turnover and will prematurely age your skin. I don't know what the long term impact Will be, and as I mentioned in the video it's nothing to panic over since other factors will have a much larger impact on the rate of skin ageing. If you have a prescription, you can follow the instructions and ask your doctor if you have any questions about it, but it likely will be perfectly fine to follow the directions. If you have it over the counter, I recommend using it as often as you need to correct any skin concerns, then to reduce usage to 2-3 times per week and allowing your skin to rest and strengthen itself in between uses and it should only have a minimal impact then :) These products are perfectly healthy and safe to use of course! I just don't recommend using them twice per day that's all haha! Allowing your skin to rest between applications should help protect the healthy young cells from the active agents and then they will impact mostly the older, damaged cells, and the impact should be minimal :) So glad you found it interesting, and great question!

@KatarinaLuise 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! Every persons skin reacts differently to different products and ingredients, so some people may prefer the la mer, and others may prefer the Augustinus Bader. They are both really nice creams with good ingredients lists, and contain some of the same ingredients as well. I personally recommend mixing up skincare as much as possible, to ensure that your skin isn't overworked with active ingredients and that it has a better chance to get a wide variety of micro nutrients, so it could be a benefit to use both and alternate them. If the La Mer is working for you there is no reason to mix it up, but if you are curious it could be fun to try both and see which you prefer, or if you enjoy using both of them in your routine :)

@KatarinaLuise
@KatarinaLuise 3 жыл бұрын
hi! I am a firm believer of mixing up your products the same way that you would your diet. But these are perfectly fine to use everyday if you prefer, it's only how I would use the products myself. I would personally pair a stronger multi purpose product like this with any regular moisturiser to let your skin "rest" and repair, as these stronger products essentially force your skin to renew itself. This self reparation process is best suited to having rest days in between in my opinion, but also isn't required for a weaker product such as this, so you can choose as you prefer for yourself :)

@KatarinaLuise 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! That cell turnover thing is really difficult to verify and validate due to requiring results from long term studies, which become less reliable the longer they are run for. The best indicator is retinol, since they are quite well studied. The long term studies are, as predicted, somewhat inconclusive and inconsistent, but the pattern of skin thinning and premature ageing starts to show up around 6 years if applied daily (which most people don't!) so using the products appropriately is unlikely to have any significant negative long term effects, but you can read up on it a bit more here if you are interested: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2699641/#!po=41.9014 :)

Thanks for the question! There are lots of differences, especially the "active" technology, since the Augustinus Bader has a specially developed compound found only in their products and is a new and novel approach to skincare, whereas the Sturm takes a more classic approach with good quality ingredients and formulas. Unfortunately, much to my disappointment, the Sturm moisturizing cream didn't agree with my skin so I had to pass it along to a friend. With skincare I think it's best to patch test wherever possible and then go with the one that feels the best for your skin :)

Hi! Occulents are a type of moisturising ingredient that works by forming a barrier within your skin to protect it from the environment and prevent the natural water loss from skin! There are two different kind of moisturising ingredients, and the other kind is called humectants and they draw water into your skin and helps your skin absorb water that you apply to the surface of your skin! The myth of Hayflick limit in the skin cell turnover is utter BS. Please stop this fear mongering style of mis-information Hayflick limit only applies to differentiated cells, which are cells that have been developed and matured to their final function. Stem cells, on the other hand, are unaffected by the Hayflick limit. The dead layer of skin that retinol and acids and other products slough off is made of corneocytes, which are already designed to die and be removed once every 35 days or so. “Corneocytes are not affected by the Hayflick limit because they have already reached their regenerative limit. Once they are removed by exfoliation or slough off naturally, they are replaced by new corneocytes that have emerged from the epidermal stem cells, which are not affected by the Hayflick limit,” says microbiologist Susan Nathan. Meanwhile, retinol and other ‘exfoliating’ products don’t affect the renewal “limit” of the all-important stem cells, which can regenerate continuously as long as you’re alive.

Hi! Thanks so much for taking the time to type out this thoughtful comment! I'm always interested in seeing all points of view! Some scientists and researchers do believe what you have written, but others do not, and the clinical evidence is not yet conclusive. For example, stem cells produce tolermerase which reduces or slows typical cell degradation, but there is not yet evidence that it completely halts it. There is evidence to support that this only extends their limit, not completely remove the limit. Additionally, other flaws or errors can occur in a cell devision that would then be passed on to each daughter with every division of the mother cell, so they do degrade and age over time, slowly with each devision. With cell turnover products, either the stem cells react by turning over more rapidly which would age them, or else they continue along their normal behaviour unimpacted which would thin the skin, which long term studies on retinoids do agree with and skin thinning has been observed strictly when overusing cell turnover products, but the longer the study goes on for the less reliable the research is because it becomes very difficult to isolate the impact of one particular product or ingredient within a sea of lifestyle choices which impact the health of the skin. The extent to this behaviour is yet unknown, but I will update my opinion with ongoing research! Thanks so much for sharing your experience and thoughts, I hope it is valuable to everyone reading the comments. I really encourage everyone to look at the evidence themselves and make their own opinion!

Kat Nord Hi Kat! And thank you for your response... Just a thought: do you think Augustinus Bader, a world renown leader in stem cell research and skin remodeling/reconstruction, would develop and release a product that causes your cells to reach the Hayflick limit ? Why not reach him and ask for clarification?

Has there been any indépendant or non funded studies? P.s you should try a different top or change up the background so they’re not the same.

Thanks for the feedback! I am still waiting to hear about independent studies. Unfortunately, there really isn't much funding for independent studies of individual products and most studies focus more on specific ingredients, but since they have started partnering with other brands such as Victoria Beckham Beauty, we can hope that there will be some research one day!

The product is wonderful. No question. BUT the packaging is soooo deceiving. Take it apart- TINY little pouch inside a large container. 1. Cannot tell your out AND cannot get all the product out of pouch. Wasting a very very expensive product!!!

Wow that is so interesting to hear! I often scrape each last bit of my skincare as well, it's always disappointing to hear when packaging is wasteful!

I'm testing this product right now, and I have to agree, especially the addition of alcohol in such an expensive product really doesn't impress me. I do love when brands develop their own technologies instead of riding on the coat tails of others hard work, which is what made me so interested in this cream. Since it is so new on the market, we ultimately have to wait and see what it does in the end!

It seems that you only splurge on expensive designer brands. What about cerave, the ordinary, biossance and any other brands that are dermatologically accepted brands. You should know better. These high end products are paying more for ads and rent. Sorry just being honest. With bader yeah im sold with it but the chanel and la mer it's just a fad. Be informed. Read labels and do some more research. If you block this comment then you dont accept criticism. I dont want to sugarcoat my comment coz that's how i feel.

Nothing to be sorry about, we're all free to our own opinions! I do use a variety of brands and products but these are the ones I am most excited about, and also I feel like people want to research "investment" products more since they are likely to impulsively buy cheaper ones and take a risk on them. I do like the ordinary and am currently testing products form the inkey list, so every comment I get helps me understand what kind of brands and products people want me to review, so thanks for sharing your preference!
