I finally read it last year slowly over a month and a half and it was actually so amazing! There are of course some in depth philosophical and religious conversations that could be a bit dense if you’re not ready for it, but there were moments while I was reading that I had to stop and remind myself that it was written in the 1800s! There was drama, comedy, romance, murder, and family dynamics and it was wonderful!

Completely with you on Malazan. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it but starting it is committing to a LOT. Liu packs the prose in his short stories much more densely than he does in his novels. In Dandelion Dynasty he breaths in more space. You are such an insightful reader I think you’ll fly through the whole series once you start. (And The Marriage Portrait is amazing. The tiger part, and later the references to it, chef’s kiss!)

I'm currently tackling the most intimidating book on my TBR -- War and Peace! I recently bought it on a whim and I knew that if I didn't pick it up immediately it would languish on my shelf forever. I'm about 400 pages in and I'm actually LOVING it. Leo Tolstoy's writing is actually really accessible once you get past all the names.

I'm intimidated by Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell because Piranesi is one of my favorite books and I'm scared to read a 1000 pages book by the same author and not like it as much. Also intimidated by House of Leaves because I'm afraid it will consume me for a month and I'm not ready for that commitment.

The Storm of Echoes divided the french public when it came out because it does follow after the 3rd book and the whole trajectory of the series changes a bit!! It’s definitely a weird book, darker than the others, but it offers a great (in my opinion), though not easy, conclusion to the series. I hold these characters and this universe dear in my heart but I honestly am not sure you will 100% enjoy this one 🥺🫶🏼

I had about a two year break between reading gideon the ninth and harrow the ninth a few weeks ago, and decided not to reread it before hopping back in. I think the gap kind of contributed to the general vibe of confusion in HtN which I actually enjoyed immensely! The audio books are absolutely outstanding as well!

The Neopolitan Quartet & Hobb books are so hard to just pick up and start, but once you are in it, you can't get enough! I had the same issue as you with The Golem & the Jinni, so just push yourself through knowing its going to be a great story in the end. For the 4th Winter's Promise book, it was a similar read for me as book 3 (same thoughts you have on #3), but I'm glad I finished the series out as it really is such a unique tale, not just within YA. My most intimidating TBR is The Goldfinch - I just need to do it! Happy reading!!

I highly recommend reading The Crown Tower and The Rose and the Thorn by Michael J Sullivan (books 1 and 2 of the Riyria Chronicles) before rereading the Riyria Revelations books if you can. Those two books tell the story of how Royce and Hadrian met and might help you connect to the characters a bit better. Someone recommended I read them in that order when I was new to his books and it really made a huge difference.

Nona the Ninth!!! Gideon the Ninth is still one of my favorite books of all time, I love it more the more I think about it. Harrow the Ninth is very different from Gideon's book, and it may feel hard to get through. Nona is also wildly different from the first two books, but it is much more enjoyable and easier to slip into.

Malazan was recommended to me by my best reading buddy so many times that I picked it up, back in 2020. So far, Book 8, and I really enjoy it, but... I frequently find I need to put it down and read something else, and not simply pile through even a single (1000+ page) book. So that might work for you- read a section, change books, then go back when you can refocus. PS: I stopped WoT after The Dragon Reborn, with the intent of picking it up again when Jordan finished. Of course, HE didn't... ;-)

I just got into The Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner. I listened to the audiobook of the first book in December and was surprised how much I enjoyed it. I'm listening to the second book now. I've had The Golem and the Jinni on my bookshelf for longer than I want to admit. I really want to read it, but keep putting it behind other books. I'm also SUPER behind on my books from BOTM. 😬 I just finished listening to Crying in H Mart last week and it was wonderful. The timing on it was kind of bad because my Mom ended up in the hospital last week (I finished the book on my way to the hospital) and she passed away on Monday. That's another reason I'm behind on books.

Please read Queen's Thief! The Thief is my favorite in the series, but a lot of people find it too slow. It's kind of like Lord of the Rings in that it's a lot of travel. But there are several huge plot twists that fundamentally change your understanding of what's going on; it makes it so good on reread. The second book in the series, The Queen of Attolia, is often considered a good place to start if The Thief doesn't appeal to you. You don't need to have read The Thief to make sense of Queen of Attolia (though reading Attolia first will spoil The Thief's plot twists). The second book really starts the political machinations that drive the rest of the series. The whole series is very intelligent and well written; it's a shining star of YA.

I have read Return of the Thief, but I definitely want to reread the whole series soon. As per usual, RotT revealed some information that I think will make rereading the whole series very enlightening. Just FYI, RotT introduces a new narrator who was just... wonderful, intelligent, insightful, a bit snarky, and all around a good bean. Also FYI, Megan Whalen Turner also released another book in November called Moira's Pen that included short stories (some previously published, some new), illustrations, inspiration, etc about the world of Queen's Thief. Fan reception was... mixed. Some of the reveals in Moira's Pen were sad and disappointing, and some stuff didn't make perfect sense? But I think it's worth reading just to learn some more of the world and the characters' ultimate fates...

Its not amazing. I love literary fiction and find O'Farrell can write, but her story telling is extremely dull and boring. Her characters are lacking. Completely my opinion and I thought it was going to fascinate me. If you read it and love it awesome! If you find it hard to push through and lack interest, don't blame yourself. Her novel Hamnet was a better one. I'd recommend Gentleman of Moscow for a literary read that is interesting and heart warming.

This is a bit of a different direction than most of the books mentioned, but I have yet to read Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer. So many people cite it as the reason they finally went Full Vegan™️ and I almost feel like I can't handle the weight of that big of a life-change right now
@safaiaryu12
@safaiaryu12 Жыл бұрын
I... did not enjoy Eating Animals at all. I found the author to be incredibly arrogant, privileged, and shortsighted. Maybe it's because I read it in college while living off of 17 cent packets of instant ramen, but when he implies that your efforts are meaningless unless you change everything you eat immediately, it really rubbed me the wrong way. Fresh food is expensive, especially organics and environmentally conscious food, and not everyone can afford that. That is not a moral failing. He kind of acknowledges in the end that there are more ethical ways to eat meat and other foods than going all-or-nothing vegan, but it feels very "I ~guess~ you can do this if you ~have~ to" and just very judgmental. Personally, I think that every little bit counts; you vote with your dollar, so when you CAN afford good quality food, the demand rises, then stores start stocking more options and supply rises, making good food more available to everyone. Anyhow, I would suggest Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma. I found it much more informative and balanced, and a much more pleasant, less judgmental read. There are also some great documentaries that make Safran Foer's point without being obnoxious about it; I liked Food, Inc a lot, and I think Forks Over Knives was good, too.
