I've always loved hidden meanings or intentional discrepancies in art. I have many books of illuminated manuscripts and notes of how scribes in monasteries would occasionally hide some writing in their work (something like his back hurts or the work is tedious). I have many hand-knotted Persian carpets, all with deliberate flaws (different color bit or design slightly changed) when the design is supposed to be the same on the other end if you don't look for it. I guess it makes it more precious and shows it is definitely not machine produced.

I Don't know about Persian carpets, but this does sound familiar. You see, in Bulgaria where I am from, there use to be that tradition where things like carpets were given deliberate flaws as an homage to God. As my great great grandmother use to say "Only God is perfect" That's why they'd leave deliberate mistakes. Now, again, that's Bulgaria, not Persia, but it does sound similar.

Painting over canvas’s is called “pentimento”,(when done by the original artist) which loosely means rethinking. Sometimes there are ghosts of the original brushstrokes bleeding through the final layer. A great example is John Singer Sargent’s “Madame X”, whose husband disapproved of the gown strap slipping down her arm, and demanded he change it!

I think Mozart may have drawn the hand in the coat for a simpler reason: hands are notoriously difficult to draw across multiple industries especially realistic looking hands. It's the sole reason cartoons used to wear gloves and had 4 fingers and why a lot of pin up girl tattoos have their hands behind their heads. Artists have always found ways to hide hands and if you notice in Mozart's painting, with the right hand only 1 finger is exposed. If you also notice in the other examples of hands being in coats, the right hand is usually partially hidden in some way by objects like swords or from a distance where details don't have to be sharp.

Actually, I think I might know what "The Ambassador's" is. This could be a style of painting called a "Vanitas." A Vanitas is a style of painting that revolves around death. Normally in them they have objects that mean different things. For example, the books represent knowlage, coins represent wealth, globes could mean exploration, and things like crowns mean power. They typically have a skull in the image meaning everything means nothing when you're dead.

I don't think it is censorship. I just think the Cupid is hideous, which is why it was painted over. In my opinion, it ruins the whole painting as it draws too much attention. Think it would have been more appropriate with a smaller clue that it is a love letter.

Just off the top of my head, I wouldn't be surprised if somebody close to the Lady Reading a Letter painting (maybe a past owner or early museum curator, I don't know the painting's history) was bothered by what appeared to be a naked child, and chose to cover it up to make it more "appropriate for public viewing."

The turbulent flow "conspiracy" is pointless. Everyone can draw a turbulent flow. It is quite random, so you can just make a flowing motion. The hard part is mathematically describing turbulent flow. Saying he "discovered" turbulent flow would be like saying someone discovered the physics of gravity because he drew a falling apple.
