The Browning Citori is probably the most popular over and under shotgun at the moment, and I have one to share with you today. I am also going to discuss with you the Miroku and the Winchester 101. I describe for you two firing systems -- the inertia system and the mechanical system. I hope you find this informative and interesting. Take care out there and thanks for watching!

Hi Mike, I'd like to relate a humorous, at least to me, story about the Citori. Keep in mind that it is an inertia driven firing mechanism. Years ago I was at the range. A few shooters came to the line to with Browning Citori shotguns for some informal clay shooting. They were all very proud of their brand spanking new, and expensive Citori's. They proceeded to chamber 1 round each and in turn each fired one round and missed their clay pigeon. Next they attempted to load and fire their second barrel and in turn each was stumped, perplexed and pissed off that all three of their Citori O/U shotguns were broken or defective and not firing. After watching their frustration for about 20 minutes I decided to lend a hand. They had tried a few times to break the action and try again only to have just the one barrel fire. The loading of only one round was a range safety protocol, not of anyone's choosing. I asked what the problem was and if they would like a little help. I explained that I use Browning Citori shotguns and am quite familiar with their in's and outs. After hearing their explanation I was handed one of the shotguns. I chambered a round and dusted a clay. Then chambered the second round and holding the barrels with one hand, gently but firmly bumped the but on the ground. I shouldered the shotgun said pull, and low and behold it fired and dusted the clay. They were befuddled! Exclamations of what? How? And why, abounded. I explained that the Citori is an inertia operated shotgun. Simply put in clocks the second hammer with the recoil of firing the first shot. But it applies only if you fire the correct barrel first, if not the other barrel will not have a cocked hammer. So by bumping the butt on the ground you can simulate recoil and cock the hammer for the second barrel. Of course this is a moot point if you load both chambers. The three guys were very pleased their new Citori shotguns were not broken and grateful for the explanation and tip on what to do. The lesson here is that you SHOULD understand how your firearm functions, be familiar with it's design and now how to diagnose problems it may exhibit. Anything less could prove dangerous.

I happen to love the way you do things on this channel. I am not a betting man but I would bet that many, many people feel the same way. I don't comment on everything because I don't always have something constructive to say due to my own lack of knowledge on many subjects. However, my lack of knowledge always, always decreases upon watching one of your presentations. In other words I always learn a lot seeing this stuff. I often feel like I am sat just across the table from you, listening and learning. The relative ease with which you can communicate with all of us is one of the great things about the internet. You made me retrieve my Weatherby Orion Sporter 12 ga O/U (serial prefix E circa 1982-1990). On these Japanese made Orions the barrel selector is a button built into the top of the trigger. Beautiful engraving with a lotus and some clays. Found it on a consignment rack, where I find a lot of treasures. People are over-looking the old firearms in their rush to grab the glocks and black rifles. So much treasure out there.

The Browning website has a nice explanation of their history with Miroku that is well worth the read. From that I learned that Miroku based their first over/under on the Superposed, and in the irony of history it was the Miroku/Browning Citori that took the place of the Superposed in the lineup. Anyways, it was nice seeing a Stevens SxS. I like to use one from the 1930's when I do clay shooting and she is just a joy to shoot. She has a nice easy swing and clay birds end in dust if I do my job. Honestly, for a shotgun that is pushing 90 I think that speaks well to its design and manufacture. Stay safe, and thank you to you and those behind the scenes for the videos.

When Miroku took over the Superposed for Browning, in end-70s and early 80s, they produced an O/U for a few years that was not known as a Citori. Those guns were made in the fashion of Belgian Fabrique Nationale, with lots of manual labor. With the Citori, a lot more of machined work was introduced, and the individual touch was diminished by the industrial process. This is why the Superposed classes of O/U (Midas, Diana, etc) are today seen as a better class of shotgun than the Citori. However, those O/U that were made in the initial years of the Miroku takeover are very good shotguns, in the Fabrique Nationale tradition. Miroku wanted to prove beyond doubt that they could do as well as Fabrique Nationale as artisans of top-range guns. But the problem of price of labor that affected FN soon reached Miroku. The introduction of Citori addressed the problem of labor price by increasing industrial machinerie processes. Those guns produced by Miroku soon after having taken FN's Browning contract are a batch of great quality. They rival FN's best. They are not Citori Browning. They are Miroku-Brownings. Look them up.

What was very important that you did not mention on the recoil system of the Citori is that, if the first shell does not go off, you can activate the second shell with the safety. By moving the safety from O to U or from U to O, it cocks the hammer and you can fire the second shot without having to open the gun. It takes a half second, if you know what to do. Anybody who does not know that must thing that the recoil system is indeed very inferior to the mechanical...
@jeanmorin3247
@jeanmorin3247 3 жыл бұрын
Note: The safety also acts as the barrel selector, O (Over) or U (Under). Moving the selector to the unfired barrel cocks the hammer and allows immediate firing.

Thanks Jean : ) The Citori owners that write me seem to be wing shooters hoping for two shots for birds on the fly. Very good to know if there is time to make the switch and still get the second shot off on a bird. Anyway, the first shot usually works these days - shells are so reliable.

The inertia system works fine. Rarely do you get a misfire. When you do, it’s usually dry fired. Duh. To reset, (hopefully with a recoil pad) - unload if needed and slam the butt to the ground. It will reset. I have a field model 28 ga with 28” barrels, full and modified and take everything from dove to pheasant. It absolutely shoots where pointed. Same with my 20 and GTI 12. Love the 101, my dad had one along with a Winchester model 21 in sk-sk in 12, a Fox/Savage B in 12, 2 model 31’s 12 & 20 and a model 29 along with modern Citoris and Browning S/S ‘s. Shoot what you like and what works for you. Thanks for sharing.

Here is an interesting variation. I have a wonderful BRNO 571 O/U made in Czechoslovakia, most likely in the 1950s or 60s. It has mechanical triggers, no recoil needed to reset for the 2nd shot. Yes, I said "triggers". There are two. They are what BRNO calls "double single triggers". If you pull the front trigger, it fires the top barrel on the first pull and the bottom barrel on the second pull. If you pull the rear trigger, it fires the bottom barrel first and fires the top barrel on the second pull OR you can pull each trigger ONCE and fire the barrels in the sequence you choose, like a regular double trigger gun. In addition, the mechanism has no "inertia block". This means that if you fire the gun from your shoulder, in the normal manner, everything is OK. If you fire the gun "off the shoulder" or fire the gun from the hip, it will "double". Every time. Sort of a "bump fire" kind of thing. The two barrels fire so fast that it almost sounds like one shot. I have had this happen to me when using the gun for Sporting Clays. I call for a target and as I mount the gun, I pull the trigger before firmly getting the gun firmly into my shoulder "ba-bang!" I love the gun, it is a beautiful headturner, but I do not use it for Sporting Clays, except maybe some practice rounds where I "cheat" and mount the gun before calling for the target...it's practice so no one cares. It's choked a little tight for skeet (it measures out as "modified" and "improved modified"). It could be used for trap, but I find the trap "atmosphere" to be socially repulsive. Skeet shooters don't play well with trap shooters. 😏 The gun is beautifully made, very reminiscent of a Merkel. In the Czech fashion it is equipped with sling swivel studs in the buttstock and soldered to the lower barrel just in front of the forend. It is a sidelock. Heavily engraved. Turkish walnut, high grade wood, raised cheek piece with sculpted line. It has "skip line" checkering, which s not my favorite, but very common for the time in the region. It is one of three Czech made guns I bought while I was assigned to work in eastern Europe. The others are an Opava Ferdinand 16 ga. SxS in the finest "English best grade" fashion and a BRNO double rifle, U/O in 9.3x74R

@Art Anson Prior to the "Velvet Revolution" when Czech Republic and Slovakia split, many guns in Czechoslovakia were named after the city the factory or "armory"(zbrojovka) was located. Some were named after the inventor., Such as "Holek". The Holek Brothers were, basically, the "John Browning" of Czechoslovakia. Any gun you see with the "ZH" model designation is one of theirs. Vaclav Holek designed the ZB/ZH 26, which, when made at the factory in Enfield was better known as the "Bren" gun. This is how we get such "brand" names as "Praga" (Prague), "Brno", and "Opava". More recently, they have been more or less consolidated under the Ceska Zbrojovka name (CZ). Brno is now part of CZ. I do not know if guns are still being made under the "Opava" name. I do not think they were ever imported to the USA. Possibly some were prior to WW2. The only ones I have seen were "bring backs" from US servicemen or visitors. The one I have was made after WW2, probably in the 1950s. Opava is in Northeast Czech Republic on the Opava River and the border with Poland. I was in law enforcement for 37 years and 19 years as a US Federal Agent. I was assigned to work in eastern Europe for two assignments, a total of 7 years. My main office was in Warsaw, most of my work was in Poland, Ukraine and also Czech Republic and Slovakia. When I had holidays I loved to travel around Europe, and CZ Republic was my favorite! Czech Republic has some of the most lenient gun laws in Europe, they issue concealed carry permits to virtually any law abiding citizen on a "shall issue" basis. Shooting and hunting are popular sports. Oddly enough, the 16 ga. is the most common shotgun gauge. 12 ga is probably 2nd. Many of the better stocked gun dealers have import contacts in the USA and will ship firearms for you to an importer (an FFL with a class 8 license). They welcome US citizen tourists! They will then send it to your chosen local dealer. Yes, there are some fees, but the prices at that time were so low that even after paying import duty and fees the price was far below what those guns would sell for in the USA.

I have an older 12 gauge SKB over/under Shotgun with chrome lined barrels. It has been an excellent Skeet gun. The multiple locking surfaces of the SKB action are every bit as strong as the Citori action and it has a lower profile receiver. It is a fine firearm and won't break the bank.

John Browning didn't invent the O/U, but his superposed shotgun was definitely a game changer. As was his style, it is an extremely complex design. That said, I have both the Citorie's and the original 101's in 410, 28, and 20 bores. They are great shotguns for the range and the field.

I believe like so many Winchester older guns that the 101 was so superior to its peers that Winchester had to change in order to compete. I own some 101’s and 23’s and I’m always amazed at the quality of these guns. When I think about what these guns cost new in the 80’s and compare them to comparable guns of the same time I wonder why they weren’t double the price. The mechanical triggers have cost more than one rooster his life. When a bird gets up and you shoot it with one shot you naturally break the gun to reload but then another one jumps up, you quickly close the gun and pull the trigger twice and your second pull the gun goes off and the rooster falls. Can’t do this with an inertia system. The wood and design of the XTR series was phenomenal.
@bennicolson815
@bennicolson815 3 жыл бұрын
A great video! As well as the inertia trigger one of the other harmless quirks that can un-nerve the would be buyer or owner on the Miroku (and i believe some Brownings) is that the top pin can rest somewhat protruding when the action is open provoking fears of slam fires when closed. It turns out this isn't so but worth sharing lest anyone pass up a very satisfying gun to own over this misunderstanding. The other U/O general point for the novice is set your barrel selector to fire the bottom barrel first as that has a more inline recoil with less muzzle jump which is quicker to recover from for the second shot.

Sure, but that is drawback of any semi-automatic or automatic weapon as well. Yet revolvers are now history for law enforcers and soldiers. And de-facto single action pistols have become very common design partly based also on reasoning that if round fails the 2nd attempt by trigger-pull is not likely to work. How often modern ammunition fails to fire. So yes, that flaw is there but in real world most likely not important. Otherwise semiautomatic shotguns could not be popular at all as they share this trait

@@R32R38 Depending on country when used for hunting they advertise capacity (here comes country - somewhere it is limited for hunting purposes i.e. 2-3 rounds max.) and also shooting speed. I am quite interested whether the recoil is significantly reduced in case of semiauto shotguns. Anyway - of course when someone want absolute reliability than 2 singles merged into double SxS or O/U shotguns with separate locks and maybe even triggers is way to go. But as I said before - from more general point of view, people (I mean shooters, shooters-journalists) claim that reliability of the weapons is already for years not depended on reliability of the modern ammunition. So far I have not seen something denying it - that ammunition made by reloading or by respected factories has significant failure rate. Maybe somebody knows which system Olympic shooters use - whether mechanical or recoil operated trigger switch. Because for some types, failure to be able to fire the 2nd shot can mean loose of the podium. Thus reliability is very important.

@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Isaac - the barrel profile and length is the main difference. The FW has a sharp drop off right in front of the receiver to a slimmer barrel contour - reducing weight; and the stock design in the modern models is lighter for the FW as well.

After Webley & Scott went bankrupt, the new owner are making the shotguns in Turkey. I bought one o/u model 900G and the middle rib went loose after about 1000 rounds. Asked for new barrels, they refused. Offered to buy a new gun but at the production price( I offered70% of the retail price) they refused. Even their website, very superficial made, shows that they are not a serious manufacturer anymore.

Yes - I had this happen with O/U and break open shotguns. Take off the forend - and with the wood forend off - move the thumb lever to the right - and try to tip the barrels off - if they don't fall off into your hand - keep holding the lever heavily to the right and tap the end of the barrel with a piece of wood or rubber mallet. Don't dent the barrels or the ventilated rib. If the barrels still don't fall off spray any release oil or WD40 into the front of the action - which will be open because the wood forend will be off. That should loosen the lock. If no luck - write me again. Best of luck!

Beautiful guns! You’re blessed. Only in America, people can do it freely. Wish laws can be amended, individual is allowed to buy legal guns & cartridges; even it’s used & very old guns would be treated as precious by people in Asia. Shotgun is popular in the world, but I’ve never seen such a strict restricted on civil guns, even shotgun happen in a democratic area called Taiwan 🇹🇼, maybe the strictest in the world. Taiwan’s 🇹🇼people think if there’s open, the sun rise will be coming up in the west. It’s impossible to be allowed forever. Especially, Taiwan’s 🇹🇼government made a lot of auto rifles, even teenagers have to get military training & do real shooting, boys & girls students know how to use auto rifles; everyone who is able to do rifle shooting have to do national defense at all, their extreme goal is all people are soldiers. Unfortunately, Taiwan’s individual is not allowed to buy legal civil guns for shooting or hunting; people are getting weak; also government promote sightseeing & delicious foods; Taiwan’s people always like delicious foods, they are working, eating, drinking or doing something nonsense or illegal, somebody is getting degenerated & weak, many people are getting fatter and fatter, I doubt many people are so fat, weak, how can be soldiers?

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns Thank you very much. Your encouragement is very precious. But it won’t come true in the visible future. The most of Taiwan’s 🇹🇼people don’t have concept of shotgun, just few people have chance to touch shotgun. Millions individual people are eager to buy legal shotgun at first, it’s the minimum request, but they got denied by government at all, absolutely no! no! no! prohibited for more than half century. Government always said once people have civil guns, they may topple government; sniping officials; killing others & affecting society security; hunting is prohibited, so people don’t need shotgun, also government doesn’t like people own shotguns, so prohibited hunting. The extreme goal is no civil guns, no civil shooting, no civil defense, no hunting; people just be quiet, easily to be ruled. Anyone got ruling power, always want to keep ruling power at all. So laws are still same as martial law implemented period, even everything is getting tightening day by day, getting dictatorial & totalitarian day by day. Many people are depressed about buying & owning civil guns, they said it’s stricter than some communism countries. Moreover, there’re cameras in streets here & there, many people very like to use mobile phone or car camera or any kinds of cameras to take pictures of others, put those pictures to network or police stations; they don’t care about privacy; NO PRIVACY, ( BE CAREFULLY) ; also government encourages people to take pictures & lay bare something illegal and grant bonus, so there’re many people don’t do anything, they do laying bare something to be job, they got bonus may be more than normal wages than others. It’s a very strange thing in Taiwan 🇹🇼. Anyone who comes to Taiwan 🇹🇼, must be carefully, many “eyes” are looking at you, many “ears” are standing by; many Taiwan’s people are very like to detect others & lay bare others’ private things or secret. It’s very strange, somebody got conflicting for each other. Also due to many strict laws & people’s laying bare, many police officers stand by (1% of population are police officers), if you come to Taiwan 🇹🇼, may ignore something, get arrested easily. Handcuffs are always stand by, put in jail or fined or both, some article shows huge amounts fined, maybe get bankrupted. BE CAREFULLY! The Taiwan’s 🇹🇼government always want to keep tidy & beautiful environment for developing sightseeing; but Taiwan’s 🇹🇼people’s are getting changed, they are not so pure, naive, beautiful as the past, they are getting fight for something, even a little smaller thing, would be resulted to be fighting or killing; even people who have mental illness are getting more & more. It’s different from the past. Up to now, I don’t know what’s going on with Taiwan’s 🇹🇼island.
@tonylipton4068
@tonylipton4068 3 жыл бұрын
In Taiwan🇹🇼, around half century ago, the old government settled very strict restrictions on guns, cartridges & knife, might be the strictest restricted in the world. The old government official said don’t touch knives & guns, just singing, singing is good; so many KTV those singing places were opened, those places might include something sexual; but unfortunately, some people got there to sing & drink, or did something sexual, they were drunk or conflicted with others, or due to women then got fighting; so many accidents happened, including killing or something illegal. Now, the new government still prohibited guns, cartridges, knives & hunting as same way, but promoting sightseeing & delicious foods, thus Taiwan’s🇹🇼 people are easily to get foods and eating too much, many people got fatter & illness; some people are very fat, others would tease them and call them “fat pigs”.
