In the fall of 1964, father bought a 1965 Chevy Impala wagon that had been a special order but the original customer moved so dad got the car to tow our sailboat. The car was white with the aqua marine interior. 409 V8 with a 4 barrel, 4 on the floor with the heaviest clutch I've ever driven and positraction. It had the Impala crossed flags with 409 badges on the front fenders. The transmission had a very low 1st gear. He generally shifted 1st, 3d, and 4th. If he was lazy 2d then 4th. When the car had 120,000 a GTO pulled up next to dad, Mr. business man. The kid in the GTO saw the 409 badge and gave dad a smirk. The light turned green and ole dad smoked the kid.

In the 70's our neighbor had the fast Ford Wagon so my dad got the Oldsmobile Wagon with the 455 engine. I believe it was a 75 or 76 Custom Wagon. I was 19 or 20 and that was the fastest car I ever drove. It took awhile, but at about 100 mph that thing seemed to float down the road and on a two lane road you knew you were living on the edge. You sensed you couldn't stop it within the length of a football field. It was like the unstoppable force. It was like a 6000 lb sled going down a toboggan run and it needed quite awhile to slow down. It was scary and I had friends who said they would never ride with me in it again. My dad's favorite thing on the car - He had prostate problems since he was in his late 30's and it had an air-conditioning vent below the steering wheel that blew right between his legs. He really liked that.

Especially when gas was less than a dollar a gallon. It had the seat in the very back that faced out the back window so you could check out whoever is behind you. You know, the 1972 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser 4-4-2 gets all of the attention for being an obscure muscle wagon/estate car/shooting brake from GM, but, in all honesty, the 1969 Chevrolet Kingswood (USA/Canada) honestly is an even MORE criminally underrated muscle wagon/estate car/shooting brake, to say nothing of the Chevrolet Chevelle SS Wagon, Fourth Generation Chevrolet Caprice Wagon, Chevrolet Caprice Corvette Chaser, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Generations Chevrolet Impala SS Wagon, with PLENTY of high powered engine options, and Buick Roadmaster Estate. Furthermore, I think that a Third Generation Dodge Magnum (or Fourth Generation Dodge Magnum if you are in Latin/Central/South America) with a Hellcrate or Hellephant kit would be the end all and be all of all muscle wagons/estate cars/shooting brakes, as they differ very little in body and frame structure from the current Seventh Generation Dodge Charger, Third Generation Dodge Challenger, and Second Generation Chrysler 300, thus also making it relatively easy to use a Hellcrate or Hellephant crate engine kit for the engine on such a vehicle.

I have been all over the US in those wagons, vista-cruiser too, all the time sitting in the backseat throwing up. When the automakers stopped making them, people also stopped making road trips. Airplanes took over, thats why the wagon died. Today, people dont want to fly, they are making more road trips now but they are doing it in Prius and SUVs. But old timers dont want a sporty SUV, they want a wagon again. I know my dad would. I would, especially with wind-wings and roll-down rear window, both so useful.

@paul austin , we are talking about the MOST powerful station wagons/estate cars/shooting brakes ever. The Vauxhall Magnum Sportshatch only had around 70 HP if you convert cc to HP, as the Vauxhall Magnum Sportshatch only had a 2279 cc engine. Granted, it was probably a good S4 engine, but the Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth Neon SRT-4 engine honestly made that Vauxhall Magnum Sportshatch engine look rather anemic in comparison, but, in all honesty, it was not really the fault of car itself, meaning the Vauxhall Magnum Sportshatch, but, rather its designers that were scared about pollution and rising oil prices, never mind that, ironically, the vehicle was MORE of a gas guzzling hog than even massive V8 engines.

Try and find any wagon in decent shape they don't want a fortune for.

I drive a Volvo V 50 Estate , I love Station wagons whatever make they are , but the American ones are something else love them , trouble now is all this emissions crap and restrictions on what you can and can't drive , pricing the average person off the road , great video, Chevy impala looks Awesome 👏

I'll take either the 59 Bonnie or the 64 Impala, you can keep the Caddy and the imports.

1963-'64 Studebaker Daytona Wagonaire. Studebaker R2 V8 (Supercharged 289, and totally unrelated to the Ford engine of almost the same size), Power Shift 3-speed automatic or 4-speed manual. Studebaker never advertised the horsepower ratings for the Avanti-spec engines, but acceleration and top speed figures suggest somewhere between 300 and 335 for the R2. Between the available supercharged mill and the trick "sky's the limit" roof over the cargo bay, it's among the coolest haulers ever built.

Sorry me again, Plymouth never had the D500 package, that was Dodge only. Plymouth Custom Sports Suburban could be special ordered with the 318 Fury pack. Just a note Gas back then was 25 cents a gallon 4.5 litre to 1 gallon. Today in NZ gas is $ 2 per litre. Those were the good ol' days Thanks again Mr Gabriel
