@@BellaFirenze As a teen with asthma, micro tears in my muscles that cause extreme pain, and possibly a weakened immune system, I completely agree. I went to the hospital 2 years back with influenza and two ear infections that were not given a proper antibiotic. The antibiotic I was prescribed from Minute Clinic hurt my stomach so bad I could barely move. I was wailing around the house for days, unable to rest. We finally brought me to the hospital as I was trembling the entire time from low electrolytes. I was smiling from how out of it I was while talking to the nurses, who were the sweetest bunch EVER!

It actually infuriates me that the people who risk their lives to help us (police, firefighters, paramedics) get paid SO little, while players in SPORTS make millions! Gosh my daughter a couple months after her 18th birthday suddenly she was afraid of her dad. He never hurt her and this was on a Tuesday. Saturday we were at a ladies house at her birthday party and my daughter was doing karaoke and dancing. By wesday she had skipped classes which she never did. Then she started saying she was guilty but wouldn't tell me what of. We called the doctor wesday morning and he said he would see her on Friday. By Thursday it took her an hour to take a shower and I finally had to unlock the door. She had pit nair in her waist long hair. She couldn't dress herself. We were at the doctors from 8am till10pm and she was terrifies when they took her BP that they were trying to cut her arm.off. she was petrified of the ambulance convinced they were taking her to jail. Yes the doc did a toxicology and came back negative. She cried and cried that she was supposed to be in school and mommy help me. Finally in the end they just took her. She is 21 now and no problems since the incident. She is on invega. But it is a terrifying thing to go through. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia

not your decision to make and at the moment that is not the time to be asking about instituting a DNR. DNRs should be discussed in an office setting with the patient and/or guardian,not in an ambulance. what is shocking is that they were asking by phone to make the decision on the spot. without a pre existing DNR DOCUMENTED, DNR should not be an option in the field.

I'm a retired ER/Trauma nurse of 20+ years. I have the utmost respect for Medics B, I, or P. Some aren't so great, most are stellar. A lot of times they had done most of the difficult work by the time we get them. Every time I see a medic unit at a coffee place, I buy it for them. Least I can do.

Much appreciated. I was a medic for about 20 years and an RT (respiratory therapist) for 5 years before having to go out on disability. Can’t work in healthcare because of my CVID being so bad. I’m immunocompramised and I pick up pneumonia very easily. When I was working I didn’t get sick that much had had a handful of hospital stays. After I moved to FL my health took a dive and I had a lot of hospitalizations especially with pneumonia, sepsis, and GI infections. I’ve had my life saved by my coworkers one year when I went into anaphylactic shock. Most of the nurses I’ve had were great except for the rare few.

Thank you SO much for explaining why sometimes folks need to be restrained. These folks can do a lot of damage in this state. I worked with a good friend that had her knee taken out and had to have 2 surgeries to repair the damage and the knee still isn't right. The patient was out of her mind, so it's really not her fault. She was just fighting against what she perceived as a threat. I received a guy on PCP once. The medics brought him in on a backboard with every spider strap they had (the straps that hold folks on the board). We then used soft restraints to secure him to the gurney and left him on the backboard because we were advised that he was dangerous. People on all kinds of drugs, especially PCP, have no "off" switch. This guy ended up pulling himself out of one of the spider straps and managed to leverage not only himself ... on the backboard in a set of spiders, still tied to the gurney ... but the ENTIRE gurney into an upright position and started actually trying to walk. Thank goodness the weight of the gurney and his limited mobility allowed us to put it back down. NO JOKE. And the poor medics had to get him on the backboard, strap him down, and get him in the rig. I have no idea how they did it.

To others she's just a frail, demented, old woman. To her family she's a loved1. They remember how she loved them, how she did everything for her family. If she was such a non-burden to her family, why was she in a nursing home, far away from her family? I just lost my best friend to Alzheimer's/Dementia. Her family and friends took turns caring for her so she could stay at home until she died. Hospice was a blessing for her last couple of months.Being at home kept her surrounded by familiar faces and the home she'd lived in for 50 years. She cracked jokes with me until 2 weeks before we lost her. This poor woman was "Out of sight, out of mind." As a former dispatcher, retired 24 years experience, responder safety was first priority. Yes, I was paid to send help to the public, however if that help didn’t make it there safely nobody would be saved. It can be a very fine line between what is living and not from us just knowing that time for her is quite bad wouldn’t be enough to say how bad she is also being in a emergency situation could aggravate her dementia to being a lot worse

@hbic3 Let's not judge others. You don't know the daughter or her knowledge (or lack thereof) of what can happen to an older person if CPR is done. Just because you disagree does not make the daughter's decision "disgusting." Maybe the daughter is her medical proxy. This is further proof that we all should have an Advance Directive.

One question - when visiting the USA from UK, we were told about the US Healthcare system, ie, they have to pay for hospital treatment, childbirth etc. Is the ambulance service free as many of the patients could never pay for healthcare. Babies are born, operations save life. How are they paid for if the patients have no money?
@rebeccahaglund3736

When one has health insurance, most of those things are generally covered by the insurance. If a person does not have health insurance and/or cannot pay, the taxpayers are stuck with it.

The elderly lady reminded me of my grandmother she was really sick she was turning gray she had pneumonia and she went to the hospital my mom was also in the hospital and she went to go visit her after the visit she said she was gonna visit her later but she didn't cause she ended up getting pills that made her sleepy the next thing I know i heard my dad on the phone with the hospital crying it turns my grandmother had coded they brought her back and she was placed in medically induced coma they kept telling my dad to pull the plug and he refused because he didn't believe that she was braind dead. Which was a good thing he refused because she ended up waking up and she still recognized us. By not pulling the plug my dad gave her an extra four months of life my grandma also had dementia

How come for psychiatrisch cases, where you're sent with the ambulance, you don't get police officers with you to the case because might be talking about violence? I'm asking it because in Romania and in Belgium, we always get the police in these cases

Wait, hold up…you automatically take the daughters words for it? Is she in the ROI (release of information) or POA (Power of Attorney). Why not find out if the women has a POLST?! (Physicians Order for Life Sustaining Treatment) Which most people diagnosed with dementia have made before they’re to far gone. That way family can’t override their wishes. How frustrating for the emergency workers and the poor patient!!!!

Those cops would go nuts in San Francisco dealing with people living on the street. Walking up to coit tower, I saw no less than four people sleeping under benches and in the bushes. That's a very upscale area. Rents are easily $3.500 for one bedroom. Walking around people sleeping near their homes.

effectively belittiling the lives of people who struggle day in day out to 'bullshit to attend to' is extremely dehumanizing and unneeded. people are not suddenly another species when they have mental health and/or addiction problems, and the constant undertone(or plain tone) of thinking otherwise is maddening. gain empathy.

Daughter won't have duresdiction to give that answer ! ! To have a DNR in place one gap to have clarified by doctor priority certificate being issued ,but now the lady doesn't have capacity so if this wasn't sorted when she had capacity then CPR by these guys has to take place , no certificate to hand at this crucial time ? Then CPR in this country will take place by law, which is why we say don't hide it away in a drawer cos drawer search ? Just doesn't happen in the few minutes one has to resus,get defib etc both guys have jobs to do and lol drawer searched just isn't happening ! If those actually were her mums wishes ? Personal advice? Get it recorded as dementia at this stage with no capacity one HAS TO rely on daughter .in this country it's law and so there isn't criticism at this crucial point in ladies life .HARD ? YEP but put yourself in there shoes ? Do you ? OR don't you ? Law's are in place .(be they right or wrong )the 2 workers here have to abide by the laws in this country I'm afraid , and this country ? Pathetic beyond words we sit on the fence on this entire topic ,it's a mine field for us trust x don't judge hun I'm in your corner i wouldn't think right but out there we workers don't have opinions , our opinions are left at base ! X
