Costa Rica earned every one's respect, in this "death" group, everybody(I include myself) thought that it could have depended on the general goals to decide if Italy, England or Uruguay went out. I remember watching at 2am the match against Greece/Hellas, the amazing stop by Keylor against Mitroglou in the last minute. On the Quarter-final round Netherlands changed(right decision) the keeper to penalties and Cillessen got angry and he wasn't changed in the semifinal(this kind of behaviours are not acceptable) if the keeper is better when it comes to stopping penalties you have to think about the team, no one single player.

I think when discussing "surprises" in World Cup History it's way more interesting to dive deep into history instead of recalling only the most recent ones. Here three examples: 1950: Uruguay defeats Brasil in Maracana and becomes World Champion instead of the Host 1954: West Germany wins the World Cup Final against the Hungarians, which were legendary strong at this point (unbeaten for years and the first Europeans to win in England), with 3:2 after 0:2. 1974: East Germany beats hosting West Germany in the single time those two played against each other. Still West Germany became World Champions later on. Which is also an interesting chapter of Cold War throwing a shadow on Sport. Especially the first two games are legendary and infamous until today. "Maracanaço" und "Das Wunder von Bern" defined and shaped not only the future of the football teams but in some regards even the whole nations. Of course the video shows great games of the last few WCs. But tbh they hadn't too much of an impact for the tournament. The Finals were always played by nations, that have already played the final or even won already. (Exception: Croatia as Finalist 2018 and Spain as Finalist and Winner in 2010) As far as dishonorable mentions go: South Korea 2002 especially against Italy and Spain. No offense against any South Korean. That was dirty and heavily influenced by the referees.
