When I use charcoal, I usually use it with my graphite pencils. If I want color with it, I usually use it with my faber castells. Charcoal is something that I am more nervous on using tbh... Thank you very much for this tips!

Tip for beginners - ignore most of this video. When you're still learning how to draw with charcoal you should ideally try to get the accurate values using ONE kind of charcoal and an eraser for highlights. No overuse of smudging (actually a pretty big no no for beginners because they end up relying on it, and it tends to ruin the aesthetic), no multiple kinds of charcoal, just perfecting your ability to get all the values and gradations with application alone. Altering pressure on the page, consistent shading, accurate values, that sort of thing. Get the technique up to scratch and you'll be able to get all the light values you need, where you need them. Obviously this will result in a product that is less photo-realistic (I get that's what the video is for), it will look like a charcoal drawing, but it's just best practice - especially for learning purposes. As my teachers used to say, you have to learn the rules before you're qualified to break them.

I love charcoal, one of my favorite tools for blending is a "precision" (pointy) Q-tip or cotton bud. I use a chamois cloth for blending large areas. I also love the Tombo eraser, I couldn't do my precision high-lights without it!

Charcoal is great, for a class we had to use only charcoal and chalk as a medium and it was my first time. It's the most realistic thing I've done so far and because of how you can drag it, it gives really good dimension and you can see the shapes really well.

I used to Love charcoal, the darker and non shiny, the better. Then I discovered my passion for northamerican comic drawing style, which is more often used with Graphite pencils for sketching and finished drawings and had to stop using charcoal pencils. Your video took me back in a lovely way. Thanks! Charcoal is a beautiful medium and I recommend every beginner art student to use it.

Yes I use charcoal at least in parts of all my drawings - usually for the darkest values. It pushes the range of values which tends to make it pop more. You are right about the graphite shine which charcoal helps me avoid.

Yes, charcoal is wonderful for working from a black and white photo. If you've taken a great B&W photo but the background is busy then you can adjust the background when you do the artwork.
