We spend 5 days in Waterton Lakes National Park and hiking up to Crypt Lake was definitely #1 on our list! On this trail, we get to experience amazing plains that crash into full mountain ranges. An amazing lake perfectly positioned for sunrise pictures. A ferry shuttle to discover the lake and also shuttle to trailheads. An amazing trail leading to Crypt Lake which has 4 waterfalls along the way, two amazing valley views, a full canyon cliff, a tunnel, a ridge walk & to end it all. an amazing lake trapped in the mountains.

Thanks for the video memory. As a young 20 year old back in 1974, four of us did that hike and we camped and had a fire, it was a night with a full moon and a clear sky and no wind.

Sadly nobody is allowed to camp there anymore. It looks like an amazing place to camp tho! Great memories!

First hike I ever did. I hardly remember it as it killed me on the way down lol. 2 months later after this one, lost all my toe nails...so unprepared haha. Not sure my brain will let me do it again even though I'm 'hiker' now haha.

Each year the snow melt is different July / August / September is usually best. This was recorded at the end of Aug 2021. I never stay in hotels when discovering the mountains, I camp front country with a large tent & all the required gear inside a utility trailer. I will also camp back country using a Superior Hammock.

@@EricTremblayAdventures I'm in process of getting a roof tent for my 4runner so till then just doing air bnbs in near by towns.. Which does get expensive. Especially driving to the destinations with the gas money so doing the tent thing asap lol

We did this hike in the early 2000's. I remember someone brought a dog along and of course it was not on leash and running between my legs at the cable part of the hike. I was not impressed to say the least. Also saw mountain Goats on the rocks up around the lake.

It's a gorgeous area! My favorite was actually Akamina Ridge in that area.

Also when did you do this one with no people? I did it in 2014 and it was packed way back then!

This was last August. There was lots of people but we were early and first up the trail.

Looks like a lot of fun! I'm overweight and need to get in shape before I ever attempt a hike like that. Especially if I need to bring in a lot of water. How much water did you have to bring in? My biggest obstacle is convincing my wife (who's afraid of heights) to go on this trail with me lol. We'll have to work up to it. Best mountain hike I did was in Jasper, I did a 12k back country hike to Jaques Lake for an overnight trip.

I use a 3 litres water bladder and most likely filled it during this hike. There is a few places you could find and filter water on this hike if you want to avoid the weight but the biggest obstacle is time. If you take the ferry, you don’t have a lot of time to detour around. Unless you used your own boat to reach the trailhead.

People need to get with the times and stop weighting their bags with water upon water. Get a Life-Straw bottle, 1 bottle, fill it at every stream you get to, never carry more than one bottle! Barely need anything on this hike though, couple snacks or a wrap/sandwich.

I believe the ladder was placed there in the 1950s. It is the same ladder that was there in 1969. The cable gets changed out on an as needed basis

In 1972 or 1974 I talked to the guy who packed it on a horse up to the camp before the tunnel. From what I recall it was fabricated in the shop at the Waterton Park compound, boated across the lake to Crypt landing (used to be a warden cabin there) and then put on a horse (the horses would have come from the Waterton River station) and taken up the trail. The trail crew fixed it as well as the anchors for the cable beyond the tunnel. There used to be a cable up the left side of the cliff below Lineham Lakes at the same time. This was later removed but the anchors were still there in 1974

The uniqueness of Crypt Lake definitely puts it on top of most lists, I did think Akamina Ridge was the prettiest hike we did all year. Video to come this month!

@@EricTremblayAdventures I don't disagree but I also think that Carthew-Alderson is just as unique. :)

How big of a backpack did you use and what kind of gear would you pack for a trip like this? Looking at getting into hiking/backpacking.
@EricTremblayAdventures

Camping is no longer allowed on this trail. So I just used my basic 45L day pack, which i usually carry my poles, first aid, snacks, lunch, 3L of water, water filter, TP, bear spray, flash light, binos & all my camera gear.

How was that sketchy part on the way back down? Looks pretty steep to go back down
@EricTremblayAdventures
@EricTremblayAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Overall there’s no real steep parts except getting in & out of the tunnel where you need your hands. The rest of the hike does not require your hands at all, only exception is if you want to hold onto the steel cable along the traverse.
