Your road trips are very cool. The DC Postal museum says that the One Cent Magenta is only on exhibition until September 4, 2018, so stamp lovers should take their own field trip soon.

That was a fantastic presentation. I recall in 1959 in my Speech class we had to prepare a short speech. I picked the 1 cent magenta. I got the information on it from several publications including a stamp identifier publication put out by H.E.Harris. Your presentation was many miles better than mine.

I started out as a stamp collector in fourth grade. Life happened and I only returned to stamp collecting a few years ago on a very 'part time' basis; however, your videos have inspired me to return to this hobby full-time! Thanks for your excellent videos and the rich stories behind each stamp; it brings life, history, art, and culture into each stamp that most of us haven't explored or even realized! I can't wait to visit the National Postal Museum.

I have a similar story Gary, what got me back into stamp collecting was the access to information through the internet... the fact that i can now google and learn so much about a stamp opened a whole new angle to the hobby... SUCH a wonderful compliment, thank you!! Definitely go visit the museum if you get the opportunity! :D

Thanks for the great videos. Bought a set of these commemoratives after watching. Never knew about this stamp. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

I love the commemorative set! (the closest I will get to owning the real thing :P) but its great that Guyana issues it as one of its first stamps, its a good buy. Thanks for watching :)

Yes! I definitely recommend the postal museum if you can tie it in to a D.C. visit. There are a LOT of fascinating displays to read through and check out :)

That's cool! I want to visit the Smithsonian National Stamp Museum! I visited a few Stamp museums in China and I really enjoyed all of them. I like when I see rare stamps, but I love when I find stamps from my country or stamps I have. Thanks for the recomendation!

You are very welcome, the museum is definitely a must-visit if you are around Washington, and just like you I also love when I find stamps that I have. :)

I was fortunate to visit the museum and see, or try to see, the magenta 1c. The face was very dimly lit, and I can appreciate that light would damage such a fabled piece of history. But the back was better lit and I could see the signs and seals of all the former famous owners, an experience probably better than seeing the face. The Arthur Hind story about burning a second stamp has long been appcryphal and hard to believe. Another interpretation is that he bought and destroyed a forgery on purpose. Most likely nothing ever happened however.
@ExploringStamps4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Phil, the back was definitely better lit than the front. Good point, which side would you rather view? Perhaps the back is the more interesting side with each of the owner's markings. Hind burning one is very hard to believe, I love the rumur though and kinda hope it is true. Thanks for watching :)

Cracks me up hearing "Hail to the Chief" every time you go to Washington, D.C. The song is associated with the president only but I can see where folks from other countries could think of it as representing the USA or the capital city. I just keep thinking it's going to be about some president.

Ooo a lot of money for paper😂......now I always wanted to ask someone this question... why the edges of this stamp are clipped??
@ExploringStamps6 жыл бұрын
That is a mystery actually. Since it is the only 1c Magenta, its not known if the corners were cut off intentionally... although some of the sister stamps (4c black on blue) are cut square while others are clipped at the corner.

Are the other varities of the this stamps equally valuable
@ExploringStamps6 жыл бұрын
The other varieties are valuable, but nowhere close to the 1c magenta. There are several of the other varieties around

If you have ever seen an old collection of postal stationery cutouts (where a stamp image is printed directly onto an envelope or postcard), you will have noticed that some collectors trimmed the surrounding paper to the shape of the image. It is suspected that is what happened here. The original stamp was rectangular, but had no perforations, so one of its early owners possibly trimmed the corners to tidy it up, in their opinion. These days, we know it is better to leave as much margin as possible on imperforate stamps.
@amandaadrienne8374 жыл бұрын
Why are all those stamps in a giant box?
@allanwestphall81083 жыл бұрын
Well, the stamp sold for considerably below estimate - at 8.3 m usd. Still a staggering amount! The auction took less than a minute and had a decidedly anticlimactic feel to it. Now it's owned by Stanley Gibbons in London and they propose a scheme of public ("fractional") ownership (details still not clear). I will not be buying shares of the old magenta; I prefer to put my money in Penny Blacks - or bitcoin, or Dutch tulip bulbs... What does Sir Graham say?
@ExploringStamps3 жыл бұрын
Extremely anticlimactic!! 😅. Working on a reaction video this weekend that will answer your question 🤔
@allanwestphall81083 жыл бұрын
@@ExploringStamps My feeling is that this stamp cannot soar any higher. Besides, its print is sadly faded and the crucial "one cent" is now practically indecipherable (no one says it, but I will!). The stamp will no longer be purchased by collectors of classic British Guiana (are there any?) but instead by speculators and consortium investors. The magic of this stamp (like the print) has evaporated. The hideous, megalomanic signature stiletto on the back spelled the end - oh the humanity! Look forward to seeing your video!
