The sad thing is this shit is happening to our teenagers! Back in April I had emergency surgery and celebrated my oldest child's 16th birthday a couple days afterwards. Two days after her birthday on a weekend, we usually let the kids sleep in esp her since she suffers from severe digestive illness and insomnia since she was born, at about 11am my husband was like I am gonna go get the kiddo up, our 14 year old was staying the night with a friend so we were kinda enjoying the quiet cuddle time, we will never forgive ourselves for missing precious time because we wanted a couple hours to ourselves as a couple. He went into her room and comes rushing out yelling she's not here! Those words sent a chill down my spine and I ran to her bedroom. I instantly spotted the notes she left on her dresser by her bed. "Mom please don't be mad at me and don't hate me, I'm not running away from home I love you guys with all my heart I just hate this stupid tiny town and a friend offered to take me to see something new and exciting". "Don't worry mommy and dad I'll be back in a few days" she also said she knew she would probably be grounded but she couldn't stay in this stupid town and be bored. This was back in April and her and I had been planning to take a trip but my surgery made things come to a halt for awhile until I could heal up. Sadly, she made a "friend" with a guy who lied about his name, age (told her he was only 17. He was 27 years old). He met her on a message app called discord. Apparently, unlike other apps like messenger, your phones txts, fb ect, once the conversion is over the information is just gone. We called the sheriff's dep the instant we read the letters and reported her in danger and missing, she has health problems with her digestive system that can become very dangerous without being on top of things. More important she was with a stranger and we had no idea who she was with, where she went, we had NOTHING TO GO ON! It was THE MOST TERRIFYING four days of our entire lives and we searched everywhere we could think of, I grilled every friend and searched everywhere I could think of. Called everyone in my family who lived far away and all my friends she knew who lived far away. Anything to find my child. By day 3 we were devastated, we know the way things usually work...24-48 hours is the time period they tell you is most crucial to finding your child alive. Thankfully, she somehow got the guy who had her hidden in his room, he thankfully never touched her or harmed her thank everything i can think of, she realized after day three of being in a coastal town in California that she was not "seeing new things" she was sitting in a bedroom and getting worried that she was not going to get to go home because she figured out he'd already lied about his name, age and what they would be doing. So she gets him to let her talk to her best friend and with him standing there looking at her type she was able to send a code word her and her friend made up that meant danger. Her best friend called me right away she was talking to my child on her computer, I rushed over, took a screen shot of the conversation and sent it to the sheriff who made it to his office in record time, went over heads and contacted a buddy of his in the FBI and within 5 hours of that initial contact my child was safe and the Fucker was in custody. I drove 20 hours to go get her and found out that before we even got barely out of the city he made bail. The judge had made an emergency rate hike in the bail to 50k and so there was no bondsman or paying 10% to get out, he had to come up with 50k all at once at 27 years old. I WAS AND STILL AM LIVID! He picked up an obviously underage child, she barely looks 16 much less legal age, dresses very much covered up in darker clothing and loves hoodiesand long jeans she doesn't even own a dress skirt or shorts so please don't go there, victim shaming isn't necessary regardless but this kid was my shy kid, she can't even order her own soda at the store because she gets anxious. This was so extremely out of left field, so unlike her. I know many parents say stuff like that but we are truly close and she is the one who got homesick at 15 when she was supposed to stay with grandma 400miles away and called me crying because she was already homesick after just 3 days. She said she just wanted to have an adventure she didn't mean to scare or hurt anyone. She learned the hard way you cannot trust anyone you meet online especially when they make promises that sound too good to be true. I am so so so thankful for the sheriff and his deputies who went so far above and beyond to bring my child home, they did find a name just a few hours before she was in contact with her best friend but it was just a first name but it was something to start with. Thank goodness my child and her friend had the presence of mind to make up a code word that wouldn't trigger anyone looking at it, it just looked like teen talk and I am so proud of her for being able to get him to hand her his phone and to reach out the min she realized things weren't what she was told. There is a sad side to all of this, the day after my daughter went missing a 15 year old just 2 hours away from our hometown also went missing, same type of shy, quiet, mommy attached child as my daughter. She has not been found as far as I know. The month prior to my child missing another 16 year old, same deal, very shy, very home body and attached to her parents also went missing and has never been seen again, she lived in anther state but only 5 hours away from here. In all there have been half a dozen 15-16 year old girls all using different apps, many using discord, all very much the same type of personality and in every case the parents were very close to their child, the children all seemed happy and enjoying life, making plans for summer vacation ect ect. Even my child had just gotten exactly what she wanted for her birthday and was so grateful and happy she was smiling and wouldn't put it away the entire day. She and I were making a plan for a road trip in acouple weeks I just was not supposed to drive for fear of pulling out stitches. She just couldn't wait and thought she found a good friend who would take her to see the ocean and come home. I'm just so very very very very thankful my child is here, she's safe and she was not hurt and that she learned very important lessons about safety and strangers and even those you think you know, you don't consider them a "stranger" ... when really they are the ones you should be most wary of. As a parent I learned that you can tell them over and over every single day, don't talk to those you don't know or who we don't know, don't give out ANY personal info online, don't trust ppl online unless you actually know them in real life beforehand. You try to pound safety and how to be safe and what to do and what not do to every single day but I found out sadly that sometimes all of that goes out the window and you're faced with a terrifying reality.
