I think it's to set the tone, honestly. If they wait too long before killing off a loved one, where does the motivation go? Like, if Shiro died in a much later episode, would Rin have gotten the motivation to carry on Shiro's flame?

there wont be any. Thats because the story of the manga and of the anime split apart after a few episodes. For example, Rins sword never broke in the manga.The anime was just a promotion for the manga, sadly. In my opinion, they should have waited a year or two and start making seasons that follow the real story, because its better but also longer. The show made this lengthy shounen-show into an action-anime.
