well most people couldn't swim back then, not even sailors amusingly enough and to stave off drownings there are a pletora of stories with warnings to be careful around waters. The brother grimm stories, the fey, the mermaid, the ugly duckling etc ( originally danish stories ) in their original form isn't that pleasant. They are full of causinary tales of dangers back then they couldn't deal with at the time.

@@gh0st_aroo I don't think you understand the concept of /woosh if that was the first thing that came to your mind. My comment was adressing the actual conceptual use of the concepts used in the stories aka river is dangerous in the society the stories were born in but you missed that part didn't you *shrug*

I grew up with hearing stories about Trolls and I both find them facinating and terrifying. A small part of me still believe that they might exist and I know that sounds silly, but the amount of stories and incidents that you here about them here in Sweden just really makes you more open minded to the idea that they exist. Many stories claim that they transform into stone during daytime and back during night.

I think the "Hårgavisan" (translated the as The Ballad of Hårga) should be mentioned, which is an old folk song that claimed to kill a whole village in northern Sweden as the devil played it himself and made the villagers dance to their deaths as they danced so much the skin on their feets torn off. It's a rumor that on a fullmoon night you can hear the music coming from the woods near Hårga.

First of, amazing show! I'm from sweden and I'm part of a group that hosts yearly viking reenactment s. We aim to dress-/eat- and do chores according to real viking findings. As part of the reenactment comes all the storytelling. The vikings have A LOT of interesting stories when it comes to mythology. For example: People were very afraid of "Rimtursar". These were giant creatures from the cold part of the universe called Nifelheim and are said to bring eternal winter. Rimtursarna was trying to destroy the church because they couldn't stand the sound of the church bells. So people used to have a small bell on a bracelet to let people know that you're human. Loke, Odens half brother (who btw is born from a rimturse) have a lot of mischief and weirdness going on. He's married to a giant that gives birth to a snake and a giant wolf. He also turns into a horse and *clearing throat* gets down to business with a real horse. This leads to the horse giving birth to the 8 legged horse Sleipner that Odin rides around on. I could go on for hours xd

Näcken is mostly a story to teach kids to not play near bodies of water where they can fall in, injure themselves and/or drown. I remember being told the story when I was a child, and I mainly think my parents taught me the story because we lived very deep in nature with many creeks, marshlands and other bodies of water nearby.

One of the scariest creatures, in my opinion, is the Myling. A child that was killed before they were baptized and given a name. This often happened to poor young women who couldn't afford to raise a child. My aunt lives on a farm that used to be owned by a noble during the 1600s. The Nobleman had an affair with one of the maids and she ended up pregnant, she couldn't keep the child and was forced to drown it in the nearby river

I lived near blå jungfrun every summer for about 6 years. I remember that I said several times to my parents that I wanted to go to the island. My mum get very seasick so I understood why she couldn’t, but my father (who never gets seasick) also said no. I asked several times but I never got a real answer why we couldn’t. I was about 6 or 7 then and I’m turning 15 now and I still haven’t stepped foot on that island. Btw you missed the part about witches bringing children to the island on their broomsticks to party with the devil or something. I think that I knew about it when I asked if I could go there but I’m not sure. I honestly think that I’m going to move one of the stones just to see what happens
