Yes. I think you should tell your customer that it has so many broken components, and it would be expensive to repair. Then maybe strip it for parts, recover their data if possible, and maybe pay them a small sum of cash. Also, I think that the plastic on the top came from the packaging.

Ugh. I have one of these on my shelf. Wasn't a super terrible laptop, it was surprisingly peppy (Win XP, 1GB RAM, 1.2GHz [Pentium III] Celeron), but the hinges gave out on me. The HDD ended up going into a different laptop of mine, but getting to it was a huge pain - it is one of those laptops (like the 1st gen MBP) that you have to take the whole thing apart to get to the HDD.

I've "fixed" 5 (yes 5) computers recently for friends/workmates - all of them XP machines and in every case they needed a fresh install. So I have a genuine XP Pro disc (that I bought and paid for many years ago) and have used that same disc to re-install XP on all 5, with the same product key. All 5 failed online activation, all 5 were successful on "over the phone" activation. I've since done a 6th install on my laptop (tri-booting XP, 7 and Ubuntu) and phone activation worked yet again!!!

I too have a HP laptop, with shiny/smooth touch-pad and most of the keys too. Its nearly 5 years old and I have dismantled it maybe 10 times over the years to clean the dust and crap out of it (overheats badly). Badly designed, questionable build quality even before I first took it apart - but it still works!

I have a upgraded model well, a better model than that one. It has the S-Video. But it has a you guessed it a bezel cracked due to the stress on the hinge. Apparently these laptops were made by some Chinese company who went bust and didn't really design them all that well because, they put a desktop celeron in them. Mine did not come with a floppy drive. But that cover where the fan is not there, Which I guess is good.

Are the backlights in the LCD displays easily fixed ? I have a HP ZE4300 laptop from 2005 that has the Celeron processor. It's still a good computer for piddling around on the internet but the backlight went out this past year (2012). I could see the image on the screen with a flashlight and got an external monitor hooked up to it. We went ahead and bought a new laptop and the old one will cost more to fix then it's worth(according to Best Buy that is.). Your thoughts ?

Not unless the owner could have gotten the parts on ebay and have you install them. with regards to the touchpad, it might had been best for the owner to get a new palmrest as well. But to be honest, my mother had a Toshiba Satellite L645-S4060 whose motherboard died on her after only 2 years of use. The computer technician told her that it was not fixing. Rather than throwing the computer away, I took the computer off her hands and sent it to Toshiba Repair. They wanted $650.00 for the replacement and installation of the motherboard, which I agreed to their price. My mom paid only $550 for the laptop. It's value at the time(2014) was less than a $100 due to the dead motherboard. Do you know of anyone who would pay $650 to get a laptop repaired on the basis of replacing and installing a new motherboard?
