Saw them in '75, when it was Lemmy, Larry Wallis and the drummer before Phil. It was at Maidstone College of Technology which I was a student. No one had heard of them and there were only a handful of people in the audience. I only went because I was a fan of the Pink Fairies of which Larry Wallis was a brief member. Anyway, they were deafening and by the end of the gig only me and my mate Chris were left and that was only because we had another hour to kill before our pre booked taxi arrived. After the gig me and Chris were sitting at the bar, our ears were fucking ringing. I got a slap on the back, looked around and it was Lemmy, he said to us, I owe you lads a drink, I said what for and he said for staying to the fucking end. So he bought us a beer each and ordered himself a quadruple jack and coke. He offered us a cigarette each and we all lit up at the bar ( you could do that in them days) we talked about the band and he said he thought the drummer was shit and he wasn't sure about Larry and so on. He was a real gent and we all chatted the shit for an hour then left in our taxi. and I never thought another thing about it. Fast forward ten years, 1985, I was in the St Moritz Club in Wardour street after watching Angel Witch across the road at the Marquee Club. Im buying a drink and across the bar I see Lemmy, he caught my eye and then came over to me and said ' Maidstone, 1975, I never forget a face, you owe me a fucking drink', On my mother's life that's a true story.

My first ever gig was 1979 at the age of 15, the Bomber tour support Saxon at Sheffield City Hall. Changed my life forever, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen them after that. I have two of Lemmy’s plectrums, one from Rock City and one from the last tour before his death at Manchester Apollo. Now 59 I still listen to Motörhead every day and will till I throw a double six. There was nothing like them and there never ever will be again, massively underrated musicians and their music will live on forever! No disrespect to other members but this is without doubt the best lineup, no question. Motörhead forever! RIP 🤘

I was there. Itv hired the theatre for a couple of weeks and put gigs on every night. By a combination of blagging tickets, letting each other in through the fire escape or simply walking/blagging our way in (The theatre staff weren't used to gigs) a mate and I went to every gig. Some were crap ( Martha and the muffins ffs) Some were good ( Orchestral manoeuvres in the dark) but this was by far the best. That massive hydraulic scaffolding bomber covered in lights in that tiny theatre and the huge volume, with rows of headbangers in the seats. Happy days!

Best band ever. Saw them live aged 16 with this line up. Better than punk and metal, this music inspired generations and even now, when I play my daughters Motorhead they're still amazed and shocked that this CD is from, say, 1978, 1979, 1982. This was the classic line up, but I think Phil, Lemmy and Mikkey were pretty amazing too!

What genre is Motorhead exactly? Heavy rock and roll? It's neither punk nor metal really. I once borrowed a Motorhead CD from a friend but I never gave it a second listen, it didn't really grab me at all. Lemmy was undoubtedly a great character/personality though.
@delaBoujardiere
@delaBoujardiere Жыл бұрын
@@1980extremeG Listen with some attention - you will hear elements of punk in many songs )RAMONES (tribute to Ramones), Sacrifice ( the riffs in the refrain) , sex and death (length of the song). Lemmy never hided his admiration for Ramones. Motorhead never really played those typical heavy metal riffs, so I'd say heavy, fast hard rock with punk elements. Still, I cant figure out any other band, with exception of Tank that played same style. Tank was a damn good band too!

@@delaBoujardiere Yeah fair points, they are punk influenced and a crossover band. I love Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer etc and most of the Nu Metal bands (my era), plus many punk bands so logically I should like Motorhead too but I don't for some reason I can't explain, their sound just doesn't appeal to me at all, that's the best I can offer. They are undoubtedly Influential and I respect they are revered by others but maybe they were just a bit before my time?
@delaBoujardiere
@delaBoujardiere Жыл бұрын
@@1980extremeG Not sure what you mean about "before your time". But search up some Motorhead from the 90's or even in the 2000's. I recommend this following songs: Sacrifice, Dog face boy, I am the sword. You may have to listen to sacrifice a couple of times to let it "mature" - at least its what I did. It then bewcame my long lasting favorite! The two other are simplier, but very very catchy!
@1980extremeG
@1980extremeG Ай бұрын
@delaBoujardiere What I meant as to before my time is that generally speaking (but not exclusively) people listen to music from their own era, because you were there in the moment and can relate to it. This Motorhead concert was from the year I was born, I cannot possibly have witnessed this band in their prime, therefore less of a connection. How do you feel about bands from my era like Slipknot and Korn, Tool and Deftones for example? I'm a firm believer of seeing bands live if you're into them, similar to football. If you're a true fan you have to go to the matches etc. If this makes sense? From what I can ascertain from these old clips Motorhead must have been the best band to see live back then...

What a beautiful, charismatic chaos. Eddie is completely lost on the first solo, and that's cool.

Always good to see classic footage .... Being a devout Hawkwind fan I'd seen Lemmy before, but I got to see Motorhead several times between 77&81. Simply one of the most amazing live bands ever. Never quite sure my ears ever truly recovered!

The song Bomber is one of the songs I like alot and think it has a punk sound with it too. When speaking with L:emmy at the topless bar I sugested backstage I told him I thought Motorhead had some good punk sound as well as Hard Rock&Roll Motorhead does well. He smiled and nodded yes with agreement happy to hear it. Lemmy had some Punk in him living life the way he liked. If you want to change the way he sees the worldgood fing luck he sees it the way he does and does not want it to be any different. HE PLAYS THE WAE HE WANTS TOO AND THAT IS WHAT PUNK IS ALL ABOUT HE SAID. HE LOVED TOPERFORM WITH MOTORHEAD AND OWED HIM BEING ABLE TO IT AND GAVE CREDIT TO THEIR FANS TOTAL RESPECTTO THEM FOR THAT. hE LOVED MAKING & PERFORMING SO MUCH & DID IT WITH mOTORHEAD SO WELL HE PERFORMED RIGHT UP TO THE END!RIP LEMMY YOU RULED WITH MOTORHEAD AND WILL BE HEARD AND REMEMBERED FOREVER . yOU DO NOT HAVE TO LIVE FOREVER THAT WWOULD LIKELY SUCK BUT i TRRUELY THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC AND PERFORMENC YOU DID . tHANKS TO YOU & MOTOR HEAD!!!

This set encapsulates Motorhead at their very best with the classic line up and although so influential in what was to come a few years later with speed metal and then thrash, they epitomized what good old raw and honest rock 'n' roll should sound like and never pretended to be anything else other than than that.

This is the same year I saw them...possibly 81 on a short visit they made to Columbus, OH. Not sure why they were playing at a small local bar on High Street...but they were. I had not heard of them at that time...but was set back a little at hearing their new original sound. They were on a small stage (12 x 15 at most) rockin it. Cool!

I would have loved to been at this show but I was only 7 and living in America. I wasn't a full on metal head back then just yet. That would happen when I was 10. But there's some good guitar playing going on here and some air guitar playing by some of the people in the crowd.
