KEYS MOTHS

Күн бұрын

Our channel is all about butterflies and moths. We just spent some time in Central Western Florida and put out some bucket light traps and mercury vapor lights. Join us in this video to see what came to the light sheet.

Ah thats so cool seeing all those MVL's. Our members down here use a variety of systems including CFL and Lepi LED. A couple use MVL's too and its something I want to try once I get a better generator. Quite here too atm. August is still winter. Spring next month when I head to the tropics 😁

MVL rule bro! I’ve never seen anything work as well as they do

Yeh for sure! I had an MVL but never got to use it because the company I got it from sent the wrong globe and it blew up straight away - got a refund at least. The only issue with MVL is they are bulky. My current set up I can fit into a backpack and hike in to some really remote areas. Currently building a LEPI Led to do the same but allow me to have more run time - could buy one but with shipping to australia it would cost $520 usd. Speaking of LED's though, you should check Ryan the Bugmans video where he goes looking for vineagaroons in arizona - he shows an UV LED basket trap - those are great to use in conjunction with your main sheet - I've used them as well here and they are awesome, cheap too.

David, you need to be carrying your copy of Covell's moth book, when doing these videos.

Haha - yeah that would help! But not when you’re in the Keys! He’s probably got 40 of the 640 species down there!

That is bad news. I'm from New England where it is cold and fallow for half the year but in the summer is lush and full of insects... at least it was when I was a kid 50 years ago.. In hot summer nights every lamp post had swarms of insects, But lately, almost none. I'm afraid that that's a bad sign.

Yeah. Times have changed. The biggest change is the type of light used now does not attract insects. LED no bueno

Just curious do you kill them? Or do they just die and you collect them? I really wonder

We take population samples for scientific research. Specimens are donated to museums where scientists will study them for decades to come.
