I'm so happy to hear that you really enjoyed MOTHER 1/EarthBound Beginnings' OST. We had a small hiccup there at the beginning, but we got it sorted out relatively quickly. Music like this manages to stick with you throughout your life for various reasons, it can be hard to articulate why. The composers Keiichi Suzuki and Hirokazu "Hip" Tanaka were already quality composers, but the stuff they wrote together were magical. Also, I mentioned this in-chat, but this was Keiichi Suzuki's first game he composed for, and he did it because he was friends with the game's director/writer/creator Shigesato Itoi, and they collaborated with each other in the past. Suzuki knew nothing about making music for games, so what he ended up doing was he'd play the music he came up with on piano for Hip Tanaka, and Tanaka would enter it into a computer. Tanaka would occasionally offer feedback on how to alter the music to better fit the limitations of the game, something the both of them really struggled with. It ended up turning out really well, though, as you can tell.

@@frankierossette first off, I do wish to rephrase my initial statement. While I do have my gripes with Encore as a little bit of a purist and huge fan of the first game, Encore is still, as is any effort to pay such a great homage to the series, an incredible project and huge stepping stone, I would say so far. My problem with Encore isn't as much Encore itself as is the approach people looking to get into the series often have - that is, that Encore will be the "definitive" version of MOTHER, and the perfect lens through which they shall experience the rest of the series. With that I simply disagree, considering how integral I find witnessing the evolution of both visual and narrative aspects of a series to be, and also due to the simple fact that Encore changes/adds a lot, and I mean a LOT of things, many of which are simply not my cup of tea. Having said that, I do get the struggle of the developers of Encore, having to "translate" a game to the modern gaming landscape while having their own creative outlook on it and wishing to push that outlook out to the world. I myself am working on the remake of a "MOTHER" game - that being the fangame MOTHER - Cognitive Dissonance. It's a game that changes many things about the original, entirely rewriting its characters, setting and delving into aspects of its story and lore with depth never seen before. The project is looking pretty good so far, and despite being a whole other can of worms, I do find it to vastly improve upon certain aspects of the original pretty blatantly. It's not perfectly in tact with what MOTHER is, and that is on purpose - it is something that both I and the people working on it beforehand have poured our hearts and souls into, and while not written by Itoi, I do wish for it to be a great game, just not quite a to the beat MOTHER game, and not quite the original. If my year old, nasty comment hasn't lost you, be on the lookout for the project! You may just find something that you like, or even love about it. And I'm greatly honoured by that notion. Have a good night!

A lot of people don't realise that the Mother 2 Magicant theme (Welcome Home) is a heavily rearranged version of the Mother 1 Magicant theme; similarly, quotes and elements of the original Eight Melodies from Mother 1 can be heard in the second portion of the Mother 2 Sanctuary theme (Your Sanctuary 2) a few other observations and whatevs: - shout-out to the composers also quoting parts of the melody from Pollyanna in Paradise Line! and the album version of Paradise Line also quoting a part of Youngtown! - The Cave of the Tail theme is basically a variation on the arpeggio in Magicant! Other songs do small little quotes like that too, such as Duncan Factory's theme using that 'calm' part of the track to evoke Pollyanna. - The ending of Magicant makes use of an arrangement style quite reminiscent of the Mother 2 version - absolutely some intentional foreshadowing! --- Also, within this and even the Mother 2 version of Magicant, you can hear the stylistic influence that Hirokazu Tanaka and Keiichi Suzuki may have picked up from the latter's then-spouse, Saeko Suzuki - In particular her 1984 album, "Visinda og Leyndardómur" (科学と神秘) (I also suspect the sample used for Venus' singing in Mother 2 is used in the track "Nightmare" on the same album)! Similar parallels pop up in her other works (such as her 1989 album "No Life King No Music", which would have been in production at the time of Mother 1), though the other big one is between Mother 2's Bicycle Ride theme and "夏休みが待ち遠しい - Mon Biclo" from her 1985 album "The Law Of The Green". - I strongly believe the first two notes in the Flying Man theme are intentionally meant to pair with the last two notes of the main (Famicom, not album ver.) Magicant theme before the loop, which, if true, is kind of a clever way to tie the two songs together. Also a shame it didn't make it into Mother 1 - it was clearly meant to feature in the game! - Keiichi Suzuki once released an early demo recording of the Eight Melodies on his MySpace, which featured both a male and female vocalist - I don't think it'd be a stretch to assume it's both Saeko and Keiichi Suzuki singing duet on it. It's one of my favourite renditions, definitely look it up!

Mother 1 is getting a fan made remake. I’d love to hear your opinions on the OST once it’s fully released, as it’s going to have remastered/remixed versions of these tracks + new ones made in the same Mother style.

Mother 3 tho. The Mother 3 ost is my personal favorite, really hits you in the feels while also being a bop. I do hope that you react/listen to it sometime if you haven’t already. It’s just such a good experience.

When you do Mother 3, consider using TheNessEB's "HQ" playlist. It's the same songs with the same synths, it just takes out some of the muffling limitations of the GBA. Awesome reaction!

First off, I love that Pollyanna (I Believe in You) song. So nice! I was hearing a lot of little bits and pieces that clearly inspired Toby Fox during Undertale, but it wasn't until we got to Snowman that I started to hear intense similarities. One thing I was thinking, back in the Super Nintendo days, I'm sure there was quantizing as a function of the sound chips built into these older systems. In Snowman, you can hear some of the notes wanting to be, like, 64th notes, or whatever...but they're just locked in to the platform's limitations. But with Toby Fox, he's *forcing* limitations on an engine to get that same sound, but because Toby's so artful with it, I've never had the feeling that his music is "forced" into a specific quantizing. I'm assuming Super Nintendo is quantizing by requirement, and Toby Fox (which I thing he's using FL Studio?) can do basically whatever? Certainly keeping on-par with orchestral music.

I'm glad you decided to react to this OST, I'm one of the few people who actually prefers Mother 1 over 2, mostly because of the story but definitely because of the soundtrack. And also because once you play Mother, you realize how much EarthBound is essentially a pseudo-remake. Something about it just resonates so well, I was surprised I found myself tearing up hearing Eight Melodies again. Wisdom of the World is definitely my favorite track, both in the original and the vocal album.

It's crazy how he thinks how Catherine Werewick, the female singer, was a trained classical singer when Mother is some of the only song she ever actually sang, and that she was 14 years old.
@ZergRushJohnny4 ай бұрын
It could also be because he seemed to initially assume that both singers on Bein' Friends are the same person, when the more classically-oriented choirister Jeremy Holland-Smith shares the track with Warwick.

You probably are already aware this cause someone likely told you but Mother is called EarthBound Beginnings(for the longest time Earthbound Zero thanks to a scrapped translated rom fans found/fixed up until the official release happened) because Mother 2/Earthbound came to the US first. Mother 1 was meant to come out & even was being translated(why Earthbound Zero exists) but they scrapped it to work on the SNES which lead to Mother 1 when it was finally translated being called Earthbound Beginning. Mother 3 never came to the US(too much copywrite & issues to deal with) so it has no Earthbound name for it though it was called Earthbound 64 at one point because it was originally going to be on the N64 before that was scrapped & the finished version ending up on the Gameboy Advance.
