Judging from Porky's dialogue, one can assume that the world they lived in was some kind of experiment to create a new ideal world without darkness and suffering, likely after some apocalyptic scenario. But Porky couldn't resist being the child that ruins it all just for kicks and reintroducing humanity to evil and sin.

The way the sound goes silent when Hinawas death is told of... The way Flint punches the ground... The way he loses his mind in rage, attacking people he knows... Its all so real. Thats what makes this scene so effective, realism can have an extreme impact if its done right, and this is a prime example.
@Im-BAD-at-satire Жыл бұрын
Yeah, too many pieces of media rely too much on visual realism and can oftentimes forget this form of realism, if there's a name for it, this form of emotional realism.
@goatsoup6 ай бұрын
this scene is legitimately the most realistic reaction to shock and grief ive ever seen. i know its common to be dramatic, because drama and film go hand in hand. but this was.. uncomfortably real. i remember also having a similar set of circumstances. i was out at night, looking for my old pet who meant so many amazing things to me had taken unusually long to come back. then i had my flint moment while looking about when i did find them. their condition was so puzzling to me, because everything i knew, the way i knew things were- what happened to them made no sense to me. i still dont fully understand or know what happened to them, i still wish i knew to this day. just, everything about this scene was exactly how I felt. i didn't hit/hurt anybody but my body wanted to just, scream. wanted to tense until it couldn't anymore. while, in my head I was just thinking, why? what? who? how? i was on my knees, i was on the floor. i couldn't get up after a point, it felt like my body was ready to give out/i was in so much physical pain too from the sheer stress and shock. The name of this track is perfect; "confusion". thats all i could feel in that moment. so many questions- so much pain and confusion, while no one around me could really understand. genuinely, just one of the most personally close to home scenes ive ever seen in a video game. just one of those scenes that made me realize the person who wrote this really lived life and knew how people work.

I don't think Bronson was a douchebag. Remember, this village has never known crime or violence. Maybe he didn't know how to handle this problem properly and ended up being too straightforward. Who knows, if it was another villager who had found the fang maybe (s)he would have reacted in a similar way.

Claus's fate could be described as worse than death for all intents and purposes. He was turned into a machine of pitiless violence by the people that destroyed his family and world, so that he could be forced to wipe out all life on Earth for the whims of an immortal madchild. The only escape he could find was in killing himself in a moment of lucidity, after nearly killing his father and brother, and damning the whole human race.

I can't blame him for going berserk. It still wasn't a good thing, but Flint is a guy that seems to have went through most of his life tackling problems head-on and with brute force. The village even knows him as a reckless, good-natured tough guy that can be relied on when an issue needing strength arises. This isn't a problem that can be solved at all much less with his strength, so the anger and resentment needs another outlet. He has to hit SOMETHING, that always solves the problem, or at least calms him down. The village people were getting in the way of that, so they had to forced out of the way. This just makes it all the more tragic for him, not knowing another method of getting through an issue aside from brute strength doesn't prepare you to handle emotional issues.
@punkitt3 жыл бұрын
Man, what a masterful work of pixel art. There are so many subtle, unique frames of animation that really sell the anguish Flint is going through. The way he swings his weight around like he's furious but doesn't know what to do with those feelings is so perfect at conveying his mental state. The little lurch forward he does when he's holding onto the wood and starts stepping towards Bronson does so much to convey how broken he is. I've really never seen such expressive pixel art before, and it's just what a scene with this kind of emotional weight needed.

@John Statesman Huh? When he said progressive they didn’t mean political. They meant a progression of showing how a games story can be perceived as art. Also localization of this game is up to Nintendo. I haven’t seen a single person against the localization of this game.
@captainniiue19883 жыл бұрын
@@ekeneanyanike7013 I am against the localization of the game though not for those reasons. I feel that if Nintendo were to localize it, they would censor so much that it wouldn't even be Mother 3 anymore, and besides the fan translation is already amazing.
@ekeneanyanike70133 жыл бұрын
@@captainniiue1988 I agree they would sensor it but it’s not like 1 whole group of people are against its localization. Like John Statesman says. It would be nice if we could have a perfect translation but that will never happen because Nintendo wouldn’t do it. Also the fan translation is already good enough.
@captainniiue19883 жыл бұрын
I'm coming back here to revise my reasoning. After doing further research, Nintendo likely wouldn't censor much, since they don't care about censorship as much as they used to, however, the fan translation is better than anything Nintendo would ever be willing to do, and a lot of the names and locations would likely be different than what we're used to, such as Fassad, who's name most likely would just be Yokuba.

One of the things that hits me the hardest here is how Flint's memory of when he last saw Hinawa is one of only two times in the game you actually see the entire family united together on screen, and when it takes place it is already in the past. The only other time you see the family together is at the very very end of the curtain call, which isn't even technically part of the story anymore, but also why that final moment hits so hard. After all the tragedies and sadness the family experienced, the only place they can be together again is in the fcking credits.

One of the things that causes this to feel all the more tragic is the shock of it compared to the two Mother games before it. Yes, I know the franchise, especially Earthbound has had disturbing moments, but they are usually just trippy/spooky. But here, it catches the player off guard with Flint madly swinging the stick around and the other characters conveying horror and surprise. You couldn’t really get those dramatic moments involving the main characters in earlier games, probably because of hardware restrictions. I still love Mother 1 & 2 but the third was the best in terms of raw emotion and fleshing out characters.

This may be the best depiction of a nervous breakdown in gaming history, no joke, this entire game makes you laugh but then suddenly DEVASTATES you. And to think....most of us named Hinawa after our own mothers.

Mother 3 destroyed me. The way they portrayed Flint's reaction and how he fell apart... I still feel like my chest gets ripped open whenever I watch it.

It's so sad to see all the villagers trying to "comfort" flint by calming him down instead of just letting him mourn. I kinda see why he attacked them.

It's crazy that the death of a 16-bit SNES-like game character can make me feel so depressed. Seriously, the first time I saw this scene (along with the funeral that followed shortly after), I nearly cried. It's definitely on par with Aeris' death from FF7. I also nearly cried at the ending boss fight when Hinata's spirit returns and tells her son, Claus, to come to her. *sniff* I kind of wonder if the upcoming fan-made sequel, "Mother 4" (which is still in development), will also have plenty of dark and depressing moments like "Mother 3" did.

From what I heard, Mother 4 isn't connected story wise, but something tells me it might have it's moments.

I think what is really overlooked in this scene is that it’s heavily implied Flint is like REALLY strong. Throughout Chapter 1 he constantly performs acts of exceptional strength like breaking down the door of Fuel and Lighter’s home with ease, and breaking a giant piece of wood trapping Fuel with ease, he’s a shepherd which means he most likely always physically active, and his special ability is literally called “Brute Force”. So imagine how bad he must have damaged the bodies of Abbot and Ollie when he whacked them with a stick.
@Dudeswagmaster5 жыл бұрын
God I knew that was coming but what shocked me about this scene is that the animation was so fluid especially for a game with pixels I just find it really beautiful in a way idk it’s an artist thing

Everything happens normally and has a light tone until you get to THIS. A family torn apart on the very first Chapter of the game, and the story doesn't hold anything back. Truly, Flint's reaction to his wife's death isn't fictional; it's a human reaction, a reaction that any of us could potentially have. That's why we can relate with Flint here.

For an '06 GBA game, I oddly feel this closely, even after having saw this scene a number of times. Anyone who says games of any sort can't do emotional stuff needs to see this.

how does a 16 bit gameboy advance game conveys more emotion and heartbreak through animation then most modern games on next-gen hardware? i guess they just cared more back then...

Stuff happens Flint. Like in this video. 1:08 is when the music starts to play. 1:50 is when he punches the fire. 1:54 is when he kills the fire. 1:57 is when he waves the stick at Bronson. 2:14 is when he hits someone with the stick. 2:19 is when Ollie tries to take the stick away from Flint. 2:21 is when Ollie gets hit with the stick. 2:26 is when Bronson also tries to take the stick away. 2:34 is when Flint gets hit in the back of the head, with a club. 2:43 is when the memory starts to play. That was a lot of typing.

The piano cue and then the lightning at 1:13 in combination always sends a shiver through me. Truly, TRULY powerful moment, I think they had it happen that early to really keep you emotionally motivated throughout the game.

Hell, even if you know Hinawa dies, the scene is so well done that it'll stir something in your gut. The drama here is extremely palpable; it feels raw and real enough to make the artificial woes of two-dimensional sprites move you. This, among many other reasons, is why I can safely say that Mother is one of the best game series on the planet, despite never having played the games and thriving off of spoilers.
