This is crazy the needle hunt always felt super linear I had no clue you could tackle the needles in any order you wanted fucking insane. seems like a ton of people might get stuck tho.

Yeah I never even considered trying it the first time around! You're right about people likely getting stuck, you'd have to know what you're doing so I think it's better to try on a second playthrough. I think it was designed this way as a reward for explorative players or ones that like self-imposed challenges--either way it's cool stuff 😄

I somewhat knew, I accidentally got to Saturn valley on my first play through without getting the needles on the snowy mountain and near the chimera lab. So i got to Saturn valley without kumatora. Never knew you could do this part without kumatora and duster though

I don't know why I had this problem, but on my first playthrough I did Tanetane Island before Saturn Valley. I know Snow Mountain kind of leads directly into Saturn Valley, but for some reason I couldn't figure out what the dancing thing was for, and it took me until after i beat Tanetane to figure it out.

Yeah, it always felt super linear to me, too! it's crazy to think that I could have been playing chapter 7 in any order I wanted! I'm glad I subscribed so I could get this video in my recommended, to be honest.

Chapter 7 is underrated for this reason of modularity. Im convinced the more a game can make the playthrough unique for the player, the more memorable the experience and also replayability.

now I guess I know why they never scripted more character interactions throughout chapter 7 cause you can do them out of order. I do really wish they tried to anyways cause moments like these I wish I knew what the characters were feeling

I didn't know about this for the longest time either, it's such a small thing but it really adds a lot of replayability! You can do challenge runs by trying to fight the stronger bosses with a limited party, or do the opposite and make the chapter a little easier (get Duster first, but don't fight New Fassad--go back to the Chimera Lab with him). The slightly different dialogue for Tanetane depending on the speaker is one thing, but the completely changed hallucination is an amazing attention to detail!

Yeah. Mother 3 really has a lot of details. You can interact with things like mirrors. And let's not forget the work the devs have done on Flint's scene when he found out about Hinawa's death. The sprites are so fluent. I remember having trouble with New Fassad at this point when I played Mother 3 for the first time. He always kept healing himself and I couldn't do enough damage. I didn't touched the game for like one month or something. Then I played it again and tried the defense up and offense down strategy. And after a few tries I finally defeated him. Since then, I've always used this strategy to defeat every boss.

Salsa's my favorite because it's so sad ("what does a smile look like again?") then there's Flint's, which is hilarious when you check during the forest fire ("you're looking pretty handsome, but this is no time for that.") You're absolutely right about that scene, it never fails to impress me because of the care that was put into animating everyone. Another (lesser, but still cool) moment is from the same chapter when it first starts to rain, I love the way the soot washes off Flint & Fuel. I use stat buffs and specials all the time in this game, but the first time I played I didn't so I had a much harder time 😅 lesson learned, they may not have helped much in EarthBound but they're pretty crucial in MOTHER 3!

Did you know that you can get to New Pork City early? All you have to do is go to Duster's house, go downstairs, enable the "walk through walls" cheat code and walk straight through the wall. You will be in New Pork City. This only works in Chapters 1-3.

Hey everyone! I had to get this footage for my Dark Aspects series anyway, so I decided to make a showcase of what happens when you reach Tanetane Island before reuniting with Kumatora and/or Duster. The differences are as follows: • Arriving on Tanetane with just Lucas & Boney - Boney will “speak” on behalf of your missing friends. Narration text will mention how the mushrooms are “funky-looking” (instead of Kumatora or Duster) and Boney warns that they don’t seem very safe. • Without Duster - the hallucination of Wess that directly addresses Duster is replaced with Alec. He’ll ask if you’ve seen Hinawa, and whether you say “yes” or “no” he’ll tell you to bring her to him right away, before turning to face the screen--as the background fades to black--to directly tell the player he knows they’ve seen her. • Without Kumatora - when Mixolydia helps the heroes come to by smacking them in the back of the head, only those present are addressed by name. As everyone lines up, Duster will still stand as if Kumatora were there, leaving a noticeable gap between him and Lucas/Boney. Everything else up until this moment stays the same. I didn’t include the text introducing the Barrior Trio in this video, but the speaker does change if Kumatora isn’t there. I hope you’ll all look forward to Dark Aspects: Chapter 7, it will be out either this coming Sunday or the next!

How the order you did chapter 7 in says about you! Get Kumatora, Snowcap Mountain, Get Duster, Saturn Valley, TaneTane Island: it's probably you're first time playing the game. Get Duster, Get Kumatora, Snowcap Mountain, Saturn Valley, TaneTane Island: You wanted to get the party back togther as fast as possible and also have Duster for the Chimera Lab. TaneTane Island, Get Duster, Saturn Valley, Get Kumatora, Snowcap Mountain: You wanted to challenge yourself by beating as much of the chapter as possible before getting Kumatora

I ended up getting to the island without kumatora by complete accident on my second playthrough. I guess I just missed her somewhere and didn't notice.I honestly was confused and wondering if kumatora was ever there at all. Then I found this video.

I didn't end up fighting the Barrier Trio with a limited party but that could be another video in itself 😄 if I were to face them with just Lucas & Boney (and since I'd have to grind anyway) I'd just fight Monkalrus' and try for Kuma's Mystical Gloves. Then she'd have her ultimate weapon right away!

funnily this is what exactly happend in my first playthought i got to tanetane island with duster and without kumatora and i fought the barrier trio and yeah it was impossible keep in mind i had managed to somehow get thought fassad 1 so i thought this was intented even tho fassad 1 was real cheap with only 3 party members and almost impossible like i respect the detail the devs put in but i seriously thought i had gotten a rom that acted like the pirated version off earthbound so i considered just giving up but thankfully i didnt i think an easy way to fix this would have been to add text when you are about to dive into the ocean like "you have a bad feeling about doing this perhaps you should go and try to find kumatora first ?" and you could still say and dive into the ocean if you wanted to

Same, I think it may just be my most favorite part! I love the scary surrealism, it reminds me of Moonside and Poo's Mu Training from the last game. The Barrier Trio fight at the end is fantastic too 😅

Turns out the first time I played Mother 3 I did it in the wrong order. First I went to the lab then the lava place then to the island and finally the ice mountain.

Haha, one of several I'm sure--I do think they could easily find a way to work around this sequence though. They could probably keep all of the dialogue (besides "I'm gonna beat you boy. Daddy's gonna beat you." and Claus saying "Hell"), then edit out the mushrooms and just make it a shared nightmare...I'd really like to see how they'd handle it but at the same time, I don't think any of the inevitable censorship would go over well with fans

@@Neenscrame Right! My stance on an official localization has changed over the years because of this. I think in the end, I do still want one so more players can experience the game, but only if it can coexist with the fan translation (Mato has said he'd take it down if Nintendo Treehouse releases their version, though I'm sure it'll float around online forever). I think it'll be okay for newcomers if whatever Nintendo puts out is decent, so long as they know how much was changed from the original Japanese. If they're curious, they can play Mato's version or look up the differences--I will absolutely be doing a mega-comparison if it ever happens!

So, i gotta ask something since you got to this point, but does the Masked Man cutscene after the Barrier Trio change when you're only with Boney or Boney and Kumatora? Since you haven't gone to Saturn Valley yet and thus still have the franklin Badge does the cutscene change? Or it doesn't with the logic that it's dirty and thus can't reflect lighting properly?

I didn't even think about that, great point! I would imagine your theory about it still being considered the "Courage Badge" when it's dirty and therefore not being able to properly reflect lightning is correct and nothing in the cutscene changes, but I haven't actually seen it yet because I didn't attempt the Barrior Trio without a full party 😆 I'll have to test it, and get back to you at some point!
